Oooh things are getting even more interesting now! We’ve learned today the place Grace who brought the mermaids to was Shiga. However despite her aid, many (including the King) couldn’t survive without the light, so they’ve all fallen into that deep slumber– which Grace went on to say they are more or less dead at the moment because of it. But despite the bleak fate for so many, we know there are still survivors walking among Humans. But it raises questions as to, what’s keeping them afloat. We know Lisa’s one of them, and today we learned there’s at least one other, a mermaid boy who was seen accompanying Lisa when they went to the hidden facility where Lara had initially awoken.
And it’s not just that, curiously like Lara (who has stitches on her tongue), he appears to have stitches on his mouth. Lisa’s right now the only one who appears to be spared from that, but it could also be simply having stitches somewhere else. We don’t know yet, what’s the story behind these stitches, but it appears to at least be gaining consistency among the merfolks to have taken Grace’s offer to turn Human to the sake of finding refugee on the surface.
Speaking of Grace, it was hilarious to see she’s tapping into Mari’s fish. I highly doubt it’s her personally, that fish is more or less seems to serve as a vessel for her to communicate and keep an eye on Lara. One has to wonder if the fish was the first test to see which Human would be kind enough to take care of a fish out of water. But I will admit, it was both surprising and puzzling to see how Mari’s completely unfazed by the fact she has a talking pet fish (which she calls Gon), which Grace is using to communicate with Lara. (Now I’m curious as to whether the rest of the of her family are aware of it too, which would certainly make things rather interesting, but I digres.) So I suppose it’s perhaps because she has a talking pet fish that Mari didn’t really bat an eye when she saw Lara falling from the sky, as well as witnessing her transform from mermaid into Human. So we got a rather unique situation here that works in favour for Lara, for the first time, she’s with a Human that knows her true form right from the get-go. No lies to hide behind– not even the fact she’s a Princess. Instead, Mari doesn’t seem to particularly if if she is one. Makes no difference to her since it’s not like she’s going to give her special privileges or anything apart from letting her crash at her place.
Needless to say though, I do find it rather funny though, how Grace has really managed to steal the spotlight for me, ahahaha! She’s the most intriguing character of the entire cast by far. Despite witnessing the tragic tales, she seems to be fond of Humans, and cares about them enough to try and warn Mari that if someone doesn’t keep an eye on Lara, she could end up destroying this town. This was something that Grace didn’t tell Lara about, and may have chosen to omit because had she had foreseen potential consequences if she told her about it.
Which leads me to the next person of interest, Lisa. What’s her motive? Since the ring reacted to Lara’s awakening, Lisa went to investigate where everyone’s shells are being held. So now we know the place Lara had woken up, was in-fact a hidden facility on the island of Okishima at the bottom of Lake Biwa’s lakebed. Lisa has confirmed Lara’s shell is open, and now knowing the ‘Chosen, special Princess’ has awaken, she’s determined to find her no matter what. And then we saw the pulse of the dagger… Oh boy, what’s that about? I don’t know which way to take her reaction yet, but it makes me nervous. What are Lisa’s and the rest of the merfolks’ impression of Humans? Has her opinion of them changed since take refuge on land? Or does Lisa have a grudge against the landfolks, and wants to take advantage of this destructive side of Lara’s powers. It would be an interesting twist if the true villain wasn’t actually Grace, but rather Lisa. So looking forward to seeing which way this is going to go!
Last but not least, we did get a bit more lore detail Grace had mentioned last week. The royal ring the princesses are given comes with the responsibility to explore the vast sea for the purpose of ‘finding true love‘. Only when the chosen princess feels true love, will the radiant light be born within her heart. And that light is what provides them life in this castle. And it was the princesses’ mother, who bore that radiance that could produce that very light. That’s why despite their father brushing it off with ‘all his daughters are special’, there is one that is more special than the rest, that being Lara.
But now that Lara has lost her ring. I wonder how long it’ll take before they find it, and if there’s any risk involved if anyone else (say Human) were to gain possession of it.
Overall this week was another great episode! It was one that was far more fun and chaotic compared to the first. Lara’s getting quickly overwhelmed by the modern era she has stepped afoot in. It was understandably bewildering to encounter all sorts of things, from heavy traffic, an opportunity of riding a vehicle that moves faster than she ever could imagine, seeing a mermaid toy that has a “voice”, and all sorts of things. But given the situation at hand, being amazed and curious about all of these things have taken a back-seat Lara’s presently a fish out of water, and the overwhelming situation is making her homesick and she longed to return to the sea. Unfortunately for her however, she has learned the hard way that as long as she’s Human, she will not be able to return to the sea, even more so, when her home has become nothing more than ruins
But once Lara’s able to gather herself, it won’t be long before Lara’s curiosity will surely send her down the rabbit hole when it comes to navigating the modern world of Japan.
Oh, I do have one more thing to add before I wrap it up! The Opening Theme was so lovely, I CAN”T STOP REWATCHING IT! AHHHH IT GIVES ME SO MANY FEELINGS, LIKE TEARS MAN I GET TEARY WATCHING IT! IT’S SO GOOD! I’m so excited to see how this story is going to unfold! But there was a notable scene that really piqued my curiosity! That was the scene where we saw two blue haired mermaids, and then a transition from Rowan and Lara’s mother, and then next was a Human and based on the dress, it has to be Grace right?! I’M SO CURIOUS NOW FOR THE BACKSTORY. GIMME THE TEA! I think it’s safe to say this is probably going to be my favourite show of the season!
