Oof… so much for confessing, eh?
Lili lost track of what she had come to see Kit for when she became so overwhelmed by the fact she had been left in the dark all this time. It hurt her even more to hear Kit say things like ‘painting was a waste of time’, and that he’s through with it. But what really blew her over the top as when Kit refused to explain anything to her, only saying she could never understand. And that’s when Lili just about had it, because yes, she can’t understand. But what was left out was that of course she won’t be able to until he actually explains the decisions behind his actions, why it’s so important that he puts down the brush and take up this role. These are hard conversations, but is something that would be better to be had.
But the truth of the matter is, Kit probably doesn’t want Lili to know of the extent of how dangerous his role is in the upcoming war. He doesn’t know if he’s going to survive it. That’s probably why he stubbornly refuses to reveal exactly what he’s doing and explained that he has quit doing art. He doesn’t want to burden her more than he already has. Although it hurts her now, this is something he’d rather have her put up with. Was it the right thing to do? Honestly it’s a tricky situation. Like I get why he doesn’t want to say anything, but at the same time, do you really want to part ways on a bad note and misunderstandings? I feel like it would’ve been just better to be straight with her about why he’s taking up this role right now. She was literally begging him to just tell her since she felt like he was playing with her feelings. For a moment it did look like he was going to try to explain himself, but ultimately decided against it at the last second.
Meanwhile, to Shin’s credit, understood that Kit and Lili hold mutual feelings towards each other, and respectfully wanted Kit to be the one to take care of Lili. However once Kit explained to him why he couldn’t fulfill that role, Shin understood why he was being asked to take her back home to safety.
But even if the two of them wanted ignore that request, in the end they didn’t have a choice. Just as Kit had to leave the country for a diplomacy mission, Lili and Shin had both received the telegram from the government to return to Japan immediately. Now both of their dreams to continue their studies have been crushed, and they can only hope that one day they will have the opportunity to some day return to pick up where they had left off.
Unfortunately, much to my dismay: Episode 17, it’s more or less the repeat of Episode 16.
INCREDIBLY FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A ROW, LILI FAILED TO CONFESS! I actually can’t believe it. I can’t freaking believe they actually spent TWO EPISODES, BOTH TIME FAILING. Like holy shit, why even— I can’t believe they actually did that. Why? This is so annoying! Lili you had ONE FREAKING JOB, and she blew it twice!!!! God, I want to rip my hair out, this is so ridiculous! Like sure Kit’s could confess too, but at least I get why he doesn’t want to. Lili? There’s really no excuses for this girl. This is just plain stupidity. She keeps saying the wrong thing and then regretting her mistakes once it’s too late.
And it sucks so much because even Catherine literally told Lili what she needed to do. Just focus on what needed to be said, but Lili instead just ended up repeating the same mistakes, whining and lashing out rather than expressing how she truly felt in her heart. Like girl, this might be your last chance to see him, and that’s what you want to say? Honestly I can’t even feel l bad for her at this point. This is just beyond stupid.
In the end, neither he nor Lili were able to shout out their feelings before he left.
What a mess.
At least the others got to say goodbye to Kit. They were justifiably upset to hear from Catherine, who had assume at the very least Lili knew about Kit leaving the country. Like come on Kit, have some courtesy to say goodbye to your friends at least…
But apart from that dumpster-fire, although it was inevitably going to happen once they graduate, there’s something sadder about everyone being forced to go their separate ways prematurely. Even Peter, was leaving Saint Thomas Academy earlier than anticipated to pursue his studies in Economics at King’s College. Now that caught everyone off-guard because they didn’t realize he had done the entrance exams for it. So first Kit disappears without a word (with the sole exception of Shin being in the loop), and then Shin and Lili both getting telegrams from the Japanese Department of Education ordering them to return to Japan due to the war breaking out, and now Peter is studying elsewhere. That just leaves Dorothy and Joffrery for graduation— that is, if they are even able to graduate at all given the impending war. So yeah, it’s pretty sad that the group won’t be able to do that together.
