Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: Hahahahahahahahaha throws salt I’m fine. Nothing like kicking off the summer season with a horror title, amirite?
Oki: This preview is absolutely strange? As a concept the mention of ‘seamstresses’ is a unique and interesting idea (at least for a title). However, I’m not really sold on anything about the visuals just yet. I’ll need to see an episode to decide, but no telling if I’ll cover anything.
Berry: I like horror shows but this doesn’t sound so interesting? The art isn’t selling it for me and unfortunately the PV also doesn’t show me anything, so I might pass.

MidnightDevont: I can not tell if this is going to be good or bad. The PV shows absolutely nothing, the promo art and description do nothing for me. If I hear it’s good, I might come back and watch it later. I’m not really interested in covering it though.

Nikolita: Not interested at all.

Pandora: Ugh But wait does the gem slowly kill them or something? That’s what I want to know, but other than that, not interested.

Fuzzy: The premise sounds a bit crazy, and the PV doesn’t reveal much. I’m probably going to have to pass, it seems very anime though.
Tsuyoku: Very little to go by, but I’m not particularly interested. I’m not familiar with the web manga source either or want to become familiar with it based on the summary.

Angolmois: Genkou Kassenki

Animation Company: NAZ
Website: http://angolmois-anime.jp/
Genre: Action, Drama, Historical, Military
Airing Date: July 11, 2018
Summary: The traditional historical epic adventure centers around a samurai defending Japan against the first Mongol invasion of 1274.
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: I do love historicals, but when I saw the head get chopped off in the preview, I knew I would be skipping this one.
Oki: Wow! What an absolutely beautiful art style in this anime. The mongols have a very interesting history as well. For instance, the mongols who invaded Japan were led by Kublai Khan, the fifth of the great Khans. It’s a testament to Ghengis Khan’s legacy, as he was the first great Khan, to show even after his death there was so much expansion. I think I’ll take a look at the first episode and give it a shot.
Berry: Damn, the animation is awesome! This looks very cool and I’ll definitely check this out.

MidnightDevont: -yawns- I want to be awake during my anime thank you.
Nikolita: To date, I think Samurai Champloo has been the only samurai anime I’ve ever been interested in unfortunately.

Pandora: Saw historical tag. I’m out.

Fuzzy: It looks quite pretty! Unfortunately, the historical period it’s covering doesn’t particularly entice me.
Tsuyoku: The style reminds me a bit of Sengoku Basara which came out a long time ago and I quite liked, but this would be very low priority to me if I decided to check it out.

Asobi Asobase

Animation Company: Lerche
Website: http://asobiasobase.com/
Genre: Comedy, Drama, School
Airing Date: July 8, 2018
Summary: The “surreal gag” comedy manga revolves around three classmates who play simple hand games. One of the girls is good at games, but hates them as she always lost to her older sister and forced to do chores while growing up. Another girl is of American descent, but raised in Japan, and who only pretends to be bad at Japanese. Another girl usually observes their games, and loses to the other girls.
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: I am just not interested in this type of shows.
Oki: I have never been a fan of reviewing comedy shows, even the funniest of them leave me bored to tears when it comes to writing.
Berry: I don’t know how an anime about hand games can be interesting.

MidnightDevont: Wait, can someone read me this description again…but slower? So it’s…cute girls? Playing hand games? Doing chores and pretending to not be able to speak Japanese…? The art sure is pretty!
Nikolita: An anime based around games like rock-paper-scissors? Meh.

Pandora: What are hand games? I assume just some card games. It’s a “surreal” gag comedy??? What is that also? I feel I may be missing out on a gem, but pass.

Fuzzy: This sounds like extremely not my type. Kudos to them for tackling a show about hand games though.
Tsuyoku: Moe at it finest, maybe? Either way, I doubt I’ll be watching it.

Back Street Girls

Animation Company: J.C. Staff
Website: http://backstreetgirls-anime.toeiad.co.jp/
Genre: Comedy, Ecchi
Airing Date: July 4, 2018
Summary: A group of 3 yakuza failed their boss for the last time. After messing up an important job, the boss gave them 2 choices: Honourably committing suicide, or go to Thailand to get a sex reassignment surgery in order to become “female” idols. After a gruesome year long training to become idols, they successfully debut, with overwhelming popularity, much to their dismay. This is where their tragedy truly begins.
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: I… don’t even know what to think.
Oki: Okay, so this is a hilarious way to punish your underlings for failing you. But on the other hand there’s no way I’m watching this unless I am very drunk.
Berry: What…..what???? WHAT????

MidnightDevont: ….I’m not sure even sure where to begin with this. I think the moment i screamed in horror at the summary and then proceeded to cry about the name…i’m going to try to forget I saw this.
Nikolita: Never been a fan of idol or mafia shows either. ^^;;

Pandora: Oh snap!! It’s something weird. Sign me up

Fuzzy: This sounds absolutely amazing, and I have high hopes that it’ll be good. I don’t particularly enjoy covering comedies though.
Tsuyoku: I’m super curious about this show! I found about this around the same time as I found out about Mahou Shoujo Ore from the Spring season and I’m been wondering what this will be like since then!

BANANA FISH

Animation Company: MAPPA
Website: http://bananafish.tv/
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
Airing Date: July 6, 2018
Summary: Nature made Ash Lynx beautiful; nurture made him a cold ruthless killer. A runaway brought up as the adopted heir and sex toy of “Papa” Dino Golzine, Ash, now at the rebellious age of seventeen, forsakes the kingdom held out by the devil who raised him. But the hideous secret that drove Ash’s older brother mad in Vietnam has suddenly fallen into Papa’s insatiably ambitious hands–and it’s exactly the wrong time for Eiji Okamura, a pure-hearted young photographer from Japan, to make Ash Lynx’s acquaintance…
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: No, definitely not for me.
Oki: This could be good, but I am not interested in it at all for the moment.
Berry: This is one I’ve seen people talk about and it looks really promising! Weird name, though.

MidnightDevont: I am conflicted a bit. While this looks like it has potential I am also very hesitant…something about that adopted heir/sex toy part of the summery is rubbing me all kinds of the wrong way. Pretty sure that’s not going to be a huge focus…action, adventure, drama…I’ll give this a maybe. Check the first episode anyway…
Nikolita: Reminds me of Kite.

Pandora: Gangsters.. Not my cup of tea, but somehow I liked the Heaven’s Notebook.

Fuzzy: I like the gangster theme it’s going for, and I have a lot of hope in Mappa. I’ll watch it, not sure about blogging it though.
Tsuyoku: I’m currently reading the manga for this and I’m pretty interested in it. The subject topic is very uncommon for a female-targeted demographics and it’s a very acclaimed work, so I will check it out.

Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro

Animation Company: diomedéa
Website: http://chiochan.jp/
Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life
Airing Date: July 6, 2018
Summary: The “dramatic extreme going to school comedy” manga follows the titular female high school student Chio Miyamo, and her adventures to commute to school every day. Chio runs in to problems both big and small, such as construction, a biker gang, a sudden urge to use the bathroom, and more.
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: There was a time when I enjoyed these types of comedies, but now days not so much.
Oki: I think I’m too old to appreciate this show.
Berry: Yeah, I’m not really into these comedies anymore.

MidnightDevont: ….”Dramatic extreme going to school comedy.“…what? I have no idea what is going on and I have no desire to…but yes…why IS there a fish in the key visual?
Nikolita: Why is there a fish in the key visual? xD

Pandora: This looks funny, I’ll watch it! It looks like it will be weird. I’ll take it!

Fuzzy: Comedy just doesn’t do it for me anymore.
Tsuyoku: The summary sounds wacky enough that I’ll want to check out at least one episode, but I’m not interested in writing about it.

Chuukan Kanriroku Tonegawa

Animation Company: Madhouse
Website: http://www.tonegawa-anime.com
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Parody, Psychological, Seinen
Airing Date: July 4, 2018
Summary: Chuukan Kanriroku Tonegawa is a spin-off of the Kaiji series, which follows Tonegawa, the right hand man of Kazutaka Hyoudou, the president of the Teiai Corporation and owner of numerous gambling tournaments. After Hyoudou is getting bored with his life, he orders Tonegawa to organize a so called “game of death” as it is his and his subordinate’s job to keep the president in a good mood. Tonegawa must cooperate with his subordinates in order to make the president happy and what follows is a humorous story of his interactions with his subordinates and other characters of the Kaiji series.
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: I never heard of the Kanji series to begin with, but this spin-off doesn’t particularly interest me either.
Oki: My eyes glazed over while reading this.
Berry: I’ve been meaning to check out Kaiji, but it’s on my endless list of stuff to watch.

MidnightDevont: I’m not familiar with the series this is a spin off of. Though somehow the key art looks vaguely familiar? Perhaps i’ve seen it in passing and I just wasn’t aware…anyway. Not interested.
Nikolita: No thanks.

Pandora: Nope. What is the Kanji series?? I don’t even know or remember…

Fuzzy: I’ll get into Kaiji another time, not now though.
Tsuyoku: I’m familiar with Akagi, though not Kaiji, but I don’t really see myself picking up this shows right now even though Fukumoto, the creator, is pretty good at depicting exciting mind games situations.

Fate/Extra: Last Encore – Irusterias Tendouron

Animation Company: Shaft
Website: http://fate-extra-lastencore.com
Genre: Action, Fantasy, Magic
Airing Date: July 29, 2018
Summary: Waking up in a strange virtual world with no recollection of the past, Hakuno finds himself forced to fight for survival in a war he does not understand for a prize beyond value; the opportunity to have one’s wish granted. With only an enigmatic “Servant” by his side, Hakuno Kishinami will have to face both friends and foes in battles to the death in order to not only gain possession of a mysterious object known as the “Holy Grail,” but also to find the answer to the most important question of all: “Who am I?”
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: Although I was excited for this show, I actually haven’t gotten around to watch the first half yet, nor do I have any plans of watching it anytime soon. Actually, I think I am a bit tired of the Fate series at this point, so I need some time away from it.
Oki: I already suffer so much for this franchise, I won’t suffer through this.
Berry: I…don’t really care about Fate anymore either. Besides, I don’t think any other iteration of Fate could ever top Fate/Zero.

MidnightDevont: I watched the first four episodes of the first half and it was absolute garbage. Did it get any better? I keep meaning to go back and check. If someone can assure me it gets any better then the totally glossed over episodes with Francis Drake and Robin Hood. Then maybe i’ll think of finishing season 1 and covering this…but as it stands. I was just really let down by something I was really excited for. The animation was sloppy, the plot was haphazard and it didn’t seem to care about the servant battles at all…lots of Umu and Nero boobies though. So I guess if that’s what you were in it for…all the more power too ya?
Nikolita: I have never seen or read anything from the Fate series. The premise of this title does sound a little interesting, but it’s also nothing new.

Pandora: Never watched anything in the Fate series or played any of the games.

Fuzzy: I’m actually so bored of Fate at this point.
Tsuyoku: I’m not really into Fate. I don’t see that changing over this show.

But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: I never watched the original FLCL, but perhaps I’ll take a look sometime.
Oki: I like FLCL but I’m not interested in covering it.
Berry: Sorry, I didn’t like FLCL so I’ll pass.

MidnightDevont: I’m gonna level with you. The only episode of FLCL I liked was episode 5 of the original. You know, the one that had the South Park cut out gag. I’m not really all that interested in this.
Nikolita: [starry eyes ]  You guys, more FLCL!  (Omg Bushy eyebrows guy! xD   Maybe he’ll show up in one of the new seasons??)

Pandora: Ay!!!!! I’m going to watch that. I watched FLCL a couple years ago and I loved it. My picture/avatar for my WordPress account is the bushy taped-on eyebrows guy, which was my favorite character of the show. I want to see what happened to the other characters, too.

Fuzzy: Huge fan of the original, and also a huge fan of new one’s character designs. Will watch for sure!

Tsuyoku: I’m looking forward to it! I watched FLCL about 9 years ago and I’ll be doing a rewatch soon to prepare  for Progressive.

Will the team make it out stronger than before or sink under pressure?
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: I will be honest and admit I am a bit surprised that I am not that excited for it. I don’t know…. I will still do a first impression, but if the premiere doesn’t reignite the spark for me, it will be fair game for anyone who wants to pick it up.
Crap, I still need to watch the movie too…

Oki: Sports anime takes me 5 years to get over my aversion and watch, so no thanks!
Berry: Listen….I don’t know, man. The ending of the second season was so terrible that I never bothered checking out the movies and stuff, and I think I gotta watch the movie before I could even watch this. So…I don’t know, I’ll see.

MidnightDevont: You know, i’ve watched bits and pieces of each season but never actually the entire series? One day I should go back and do that. Till then, i’ll have to pass.
Nikolita: So… many… muscles. o.O

Pandora: Nope. Never got on to watching this show. I should have, it is still not too late. I usually hate sports anime, but I liked Cheer Danshi. Hmm. But I’ll consider checking out the first season,

Fuzzy: Never seen it, never will.
Tsuyoku: Oops, I never got around to finishing season 2 or watched the movies so I feel too behind in the franchise to be interested.

Gintama. Shirogane no Tamashii-hen S2

Animation Company: BN Pictures
Website: http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/gintama/
Genre: Action, Comedy, Historical, Parody, Samurai, Sci-Fi, Shounen
Airing Date: July 9, 2018
Summary: Second Season of Gintama Shirogane no Tamashii-hen
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: Pass.
Oki: Did someone say I’m too far behind on this anime to cover it?!
Berry: Apparently, this is the final season. I know the fans will be sad it’ll be over but I’ll kinda be glad I won’t have to see it on these previews anymore.

MidnightDevont: I watched the first few episodes of Gintama and the humor just didn’t click with me. I did sit down and watch the entire Bleach skit in it once though…that was fun. Overall though, not really my cup of tea.
Nikolita: Never seen or read anything Gintama, and have no plans to.

Pandora: Still going on??? Wow! Still a classic, though. I enjoy it, by jumping around to various episodes in different seasons. I don’t ever watch a full season. I watched 20 episodes of the first season, tho.

Fuzzy: I need to start Gintama already, but that episode count is daunting.
Tsuyoku: I’m around episode 20 of the first show so I doubt I’ll catch up in time.

Grand Blue

Animation Company: Zero-G
Website: http://grandblue-anime.com
Genre: Comedy, Seinen, Slice of Life
Airing Date: July 14, 2018
Summary: A new life begins for Kitahara Iori as he begins his college career near the ocean in Izu city, full of excitement for his new life. He will be moving into his Uncle’s diving store “Grand Blue.” There he finds the beautiful ocean, beautiful women, and men that love diving and alcohol. Will Iori be able to live his dream college life?
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: At first I was curious about it, but as soon as I watched the PV, I lost all interest.
Oki: This anime looks completely boring. The art style is the worst it could have been for such a premise: I was expecting breath taking shots of aquarium life, Instead most of the PVs are arguing and drinking. I’m not a fan.
Berry: The second PV absolutely killed this for me, what a shame.

MidnightDevont:  Yeah, after watching both PV’s I can confirm that this does nothing for me. I can’t even think of anything witty to say…i’ll pass.
Nikolita: I’d watch for the beautiful water shots (I must have been a mermaid or a dolphin in another life), but that’s about it.

Pandora: Hmm. Seems like a nice show for a person who has to go to college at the end of the summer. I’ll check it out. And I also think some one is going to drown, it always happens in every ocean show.

Fuzzy: Huge fan of the manga! Will go for it!
Tsuyoku: I’ve never read the manga, but I know quite a few people that gush about it. Still, I was also kind of turned off by  the PVs so I’m on the fence.

Hanebado!

Animation Company: LIDEN FILMS
Website: http://hanebad.com
Genre: Seinen, Sports
Airing Date: July 2, 2018
Summary: The manga’s story begins with Kentarou Tachibana, the badminton coach of Kitakomachi High School’s badminton team. Tachibana tries to get Ayano to join the badminton team, but finds out that Ayano hates badminton.
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: I enjoy badminton, so I am really excited to see how this show will turn out! I don’t think I will be covering this though…I guess I’ll put my name down just in case.
Oki: What’s that? I’m still trying to finish Eyeshield 21.
Berry: This looks amazing and this is one of the very few shows of this season that caught my attention! It looks like a legit female sports anime, which I don’t think there’s enough of personally. At first I was planning on covering this, but I’ve had trouble reviewing sports anime in the past, so I’ll pass on reviewing but will definitely watch.

MidnightDevont: I struggle to like sports anime enough as it is. Much less for a sport I could care less about…
Nikolita: I like badminton, but not enough to watch a show about it.

Pandora: Nope. Badminton?? I also hate badminton, also. Every time in gym class, I’d struggle to hit the birdie.

Fuzzy: Not a huge badminton fan, will have to pass.
Tsuyoku: I don’t even know how this sport works! I might check it out for educational reasons, but I’m not super stoked.

It happens when she meets the child Shio, for whom she is convinced she feels true love for the first time. Satou may seem sweet and innocent, but there is nothing she won’t do to protect their life together, including committing murder. But from where did she acquire the little girl, and how long can their “Happy Sugar Life” together last?
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Team Impression

Eva: HOLDS UP NEON SIGN NO. NO.NO. NO. NO. HELL NO.
Oki: True love? For baby? I MEAN what the actual? Haha excuse my I’m out.
Berry: I’m…really interested in this and I don’t know why??? Usually this is something I would run away from, but for some fucked up reason I’m so curious to see what this show will be, why these characters are the way they are, and so on.

MidnightDevont: …High schooler…meets CHILD who she is convinced she feels ‘true love’ for….I think THAT’S the horror part of this anime. Not you know, the murder and blood….and whatever weird crazy circumstances that brought them together which I suspect kidnapping given the missing child poster in the PV. After actually doing some research on this via the manga…i’m gonna pass.
Nikolita: I know that this is supposed to have some kind of huge twist given it’s tagged as being a horror title, but my brain reads the first half of the synopsis and just yells NOPE.

Pandora: Heh, I read this manga. I actually might pick this up because I do too many comedy shows.

Fuzzy: Interesting premise and it seems gorgeous, not enough to make me pick it up though.
Tsuyoku: Huh, what did I just read. Not interested.

Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3

Eva: If they were to on the actual game instead of fanservice, I would love this watch this. The first PV made me worried, the second preview gave me hope.
Oki: It’s dead or alive but without the mechanics!
Berry: Aaaaaand this is one of those fanservice female sports anime we almost always see that makes me just…sigh. And cry. At least, I hope they take this more seriously but I doubt it.

MidnightDevont:  I look at this and you know what I see, a giant neon flashing sign that says “Yuri fanservice”. Girls in bikini’s all the time? A sports anime with no guys? FANSERVICE~.
Nikolita: Definitely don’t like volleyball enough to watch or blog a show about it.

Pandora: It’s sports, yet again. So I’m going to pass. I like volleyball, tho.

Fuzzy: Maybe it’s a new Haikyuu? Doubtful.
TsuyokuI’m marginally more interested in this than in the badminton anime.

MidnightDevont:  ….okay, why does this sound super cute? I’m not like…really interested enough to sit and cover it…but it’s really adorable sounding!
Nikolita: This actually looks really cute, but I don’t know if I’d be interested enough to cover it for an entire season.

Pandora: Looks cute. Reminds me of Yumi’s Cells, where they show the brain cells interacting with each other. I love that comic

Fuzzy: A cute premise, reminds me of Osmosis Jones. Seems cool.

As weird as it sounds, the odd couple begins a strange bond and friendship.

Eva: I have definitely heard of this one before, but I was never interested in it.
Oki: I’m a little over the ‘token amazing gamer girl and eccentric nerdy guy’
Berry: Don’t know how long it’ll keep my interest, but I’ll catch a few episodes and see.

MidnightDevont:  I’m not big on the art style. Otherwise this sounds pretty interesting, I like the idea that a girl gamer could kick this guys butt at street fighter thirty times in a row. It sounds fun, but it also doesn’t look like it’s for me.
Nikolita: The eyes in the trailer are messing with me… x_x

Pandora: Retro! Seems interesting, tho. Why does she follow him?? That’s what I want to know. Time to watch the show.

Fuzzy: I don’t like the art style or the premise, pass!
Tsuyoku: I’m getting ‘Gamers’ flashbacks from that summary and that one was disappointing so I’ll pass on this one.

Eva: Whisked off into a new world yet again….
Oki: Ah generic anime harem crap, I’m so excited!
Berry: I didn’t even need to read the summary to know what this was going to be about. All I had to do was look at the promo art’s generic visuals with the one single male surrounded by half naked females. Fuck off.

MidnightDevont: I saw ‘Harem’ in the genre’s and lost all interest immediately….
Nikolita: I agree with Pandora.

Pandora: Ooo… How many shows where have people been whisked into new worlds by testing out things? One too many.  Not today..Not today.

Fuzzy: Isekai makes me vomit.
Tsuyoku: None of this appeals to me at all.

But of course… I am Diablo, the being known and feared as the Demon Lord!” So begins a tale of adventure with an earth-shakingly powerful Demon Lord (or at least someone who acts like one) taking on another world!

Eva: The premise of it sounds awfully like Overlord… but with hardcore fanservice, so no, pass.
Oki: UHM excuse you for stealing the premise of Overlord, and failing to make such a sexy devil as Albedo, no thanks.
Berry: AGAIN, LOOK AT MY PREVIOUS COMMENT^^^

MidnightDevont:  This sounds like a less interesting Overlord…which incidentally also has it’s third season coming out this season. So i’ll be watching that instead of this.
Nikolita: Sounds a little like Overlord…?

Pandora: I’ma need to pass on this. Yet another NEET who plays videogames and can’t interact with people. But what are they going to do make this interesting.

Fuzzy: I have vomited twice now.
Tsuyoku: Isekai again. I really hope there will be another trend soon.

The story of a young man and the three girls he meets on an island full of mysteries and exclusive customs is about to be unraveled…

Eva: Hmmm, it sounds interesting with the sci-fic aspect as a “time traveler” wih a mission. I might take a look.
Oki: Don’t caaaaaare
Berry: I’m not really too sure what to make of this? I kinda care, kinda don’t care.

MidnightDevont: A visual novel adaptation huh? Visual novel…remote location, time travel, cute girls….i’m getting distinct Higurashi vibes off this and i’m not entirely sure why. My small bit of research shows that there are branching and multiple endings depending on the girl you pick though…which probably means the anime is going to be a mess. So i’ll take a hard pass.
Nikolita: Definitely interested!

Pandora: Nah. But I want to know why they can’t try to go back the mainland and why this time-travelling man has specially come to the island.

Fuzzy: Doesn’t particularly stand out to me. Studio feel is nice though.
Tsuyoku: Not interested.

Oki: Violence is never the answer in comedy.
Berry: Never liked these types of comedies.

MidnightDevont: Violent slapstick comedy…Dokoro-chan? No thanks.
Nikolita: Meeeh.

Pandora: Oh snap…Part of me doesn’t want to watch a violent comedy…

Fuzzy: Enough of violent comedy.
Tsuyoku: I can enjoy slapstick comedy, but I don’t think I could blog about and this one particuarly doesn’t really seem interesting.

Kiyotaka is called the “Holmes at Teramachi Sanjou,” and he and Aoi solve odd cases brought to them by various clients.
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3

Eva: I love mysteries, but these type of shows can be incredibly slow unless they are continuously investigating one main case. Regardless, I’ll give it a shot to see where it goes.
Oki: Mystery shows like this make me yawn
Berry: Eeeehhhhhhhh…….I like mysteries but this doesn’t look like the kind of mystery I would like.

MidnightDevont: I love mysteries and mystery animes, but I’ve tried covering weekly mystery shows before. It becomes a chore fast because most of them are two-parters and NOTHING EVER HAPPENS in the first part. So unless I am allowed special coverage for 2 parters where I can go bi-weekly…i’ll say no way and walk on.
Nikolita: The only Sherlock series I like is the BBC one.

Pandora: A mystery show. I love Scooby Doo and other things like that, so I may like it. Are they just going to have small mysteries with an overbearing big mystery they solve at the end or just small mysteries? I just hope the mystery aren’t dumb. Because after a few of those you never want to watch the show.

Fuzzy: Seems adorable and right up Eva’s alley, not for me though!
Tsuyoku: I’m so torn. On the one hand I like mystery shows, but on the other hand the poster for this gives me cutesy slice of life + romance vibes?

Oki: Incidents…blockades….anime….blood….super smash brothers….everyone is here except for me! /out
Berry: Naahh

MidnightDevont:  Lord of Vermillion…why does that sound familiar? Is this a spin off of anything? Made from a game? OH A CARD GAME. Well alright then, I briefly thought I was going insane…but still um…hmmmm…it has it’s ups and downs from the summary…I’ll pass though.
Nikolita: I almost signed up for this as it reminded me of ReCREATORS.

Pandora: Not interested. I feel like this going to be messy and alot of killing.

Fuzzy: Seems like the edge lord show of the season.
Tsuyoku: The kind of stuff I would have loved 5 years ago! 2018 me knows better though.

Eva: This would probably spook me out too much, ahahahaha;;;;;
Oki: I don’t care about the art style and that’s 90% of why I watch anime, so no thanks.
Berry: Yeah this isn’t grabbing me either.

MidnightDevont: Honestly. I’m interested. The art vaguely reminds me of Shaman King and when looking into it, I noticed the mangaka was previous the assistant of Obata-sensei. Which was just a cool thing to note. I’ll be taking a look at this.
Nikolita: I’m a little picky with supernatural titles. Maybe I just don’t like anything related to ghosts.

Pandora: Hmm. That’s seem cool. But I don’t feel like watching it. It feels like a late-Fall on the couch, under the warm fuzzy blanket thing.

Fuzzy: I like the art style, but it seems a bit meh.
Tsuyoku: Hm, seems like it’d be the kind of episodic supernatural title that bores me to tears. I might check it out later in the season depending on audience response.

Oki: Idols? IDOLS? Cute girls are great and all, but I am not about this life.
Berry: I like checking out new idol series but this looks lifeless. 😐

MidnightDevont: This doesn’t even look like the GOOD kind of idol anime. Low selling, c-list idols get one new member and make it big? Yeah. no.
Nikolita: Idols, pass.

Pandora: No idols show for now. I just finished watching The Unit, which was pretty good by the way. I never really watched an idol show minus Wake Up Girls.

Oki: Looking at the PVs I can tell the production budget isn’t very high, and I think this is a difficult concept to deliver on if they don’t have the resources.
Berry: I just don’t think these kinds of shows appeal to me anymore. I like my handsome men but…no thanks?

MidnightDevont: The fact that the genre’s are supernatural and actions and not romance comfort me on a level that you don’t even understand. When I saw this originally I thought it was going to be a romance and I thought it was going to be a steaming pile of garbage. Looking at it knowing it’s not a romance, I’m vaguely interested…not enough to cover it though.
Nikolita: Where have we heard this one before? If it’s not a cafe it’s a bar. With that being said the seiyuu for Vlad Garfunkel is Takahiro Sakurai, who voiced Cloud Strife in Last Order: Final Fantasy VII and Griffith in Berserk (2016), and I’d almost watch just to listen to him~<3

MidnightDevont: Vampires vs Werewolves. Oh man, what was that movie? The one with Kate Beckinsale? Underworld? Yeah, I liked that movie. This also gives me a sort of Hellsing vibe? Not in the art, but in the themes…so sure. I’ll check it out.
Nikolita: Vampires? Naaaah. * shooes away *

Pandora: Historical?? Bye.

Fuzzy: I’ll give it a go! Looks like it has potential.
Tsuyoku: Not very interested.

However, mixed in with their inventory are tsukumogami, objects that have turned into spirits after a hundred years of existence. The siblings sometimes lend these sentient items to customers. Both Obeni and Seiji can see and talk to these spirits, and other tsukumogami often come to the store after hearing of the famed siblings.

Eva: Now you have my attention! This show is right up my alley!
Oki: Naaaah.
Berry: Looks cute, might give it a shot.

MidnightDevont: Hmmmmm, it has some potential but it’s not for me.
Nikolita: I think it has the potential to be cute and interesting, but it’s not for me.

Pandora: Historical… nah. But kids talking to spirts and spirts taking on the form of rented items…Ay! I just need an old 2015 Drake meme to put this in.

Fuzzy: I like Yokai shows, but only when I’m in the perfect mood for them.
Tsuyoku: Yokai shows can be pretty cool, but this isn’t really a priority to me.

Eva: Finally, a romance! I NEED SUMMER ROMANCE DAMN IT!
Oki: Romance you say? I’d have to watch an episode to see.
Berry: This doesn’t look very appealing to me.

MidnightDevont:  I have multiple questions, mostly involving why there is a talking cat creature in this romance anime…
Nikolita: I’ll leave this one to Eva and look forward to her reviews. 😀

Pandora: Looks interesting, but nah.

Fuzzy: Nope, doesn’t seem interesting at all.
Tsuyoku: Not really my kind of show.

Eva: I have heard of this one, might check it out at some point.
Oki: Nah.
Berry: NO

MidnightDevont: Ecchi…Harem…..HAHAHAHAHHAA nope.
Nikolita: …No thank you. I have no interest in anything ghost-related, let alone a title that has both ecchi and harem as listed genres.

Pandora: Hmmm..nah. I feel like it could be interesting, but they are going to mess up.

Fuzzy: Sounds like a very good meme show, but not something I’d cover.
Tsuyoku: The harem + ecchi combo tags just tell me to get out.

Eva: Never heard of ZOIDS… But watching the preview tells me this isn’t my type of mecha.
Oki: Oh my god the nostalgia?? Not sure if I’ll cover it but I’ll give it a shot later.
Berry: I’ve heard of Zoids, but this is not for me.

MidnightDevont: Oh Zoids. I vaguely remember that show. Not my kind of mecha though. No thanks.
Nikolita: Holds up a big sign reading PASS! *

Pandora: Someone must like mechas, otherwise they wouldn’t be making so many every season and I accept that. I realized something. I like FLCL, but for every other mecha I’m like nah… To be honest, I didn’t even think FLCL was a mecha. But now that I think about it, it has robots and people turning into robots. Reflections of a Comedy Lover.

Fuzzy: Pretty sure I had a Zoids toy as a child, a very distant memory though.
Tsuyoku: The franchise name rings a bell, but I’m not interested.

Overall Thoughts

Eva: Action, Horror and Comedy seems to be the main themes of this season, I am surprised by how many titles have caught my attention, but we will have to see how many of them will keep me interested. For the time being you can count on me covering Free! (S3), and Yume Oukoku to Nemureru 100 Nin no Ouji-sama, because it’s a romance, obviously. We will have to see how the first episode turns out. And then there is of course Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight, that had caught my attention the moment it was announced. The rest are wildcards. I can’t say how many shows I will be picking up, but I know better I should probably take it easy… As for the Summer Project: Otome Madness, at long last, the reviews I have been meaning to share (such as Code: Realize and Norn9 Var Commons) are finally ready to be released, and there will be plenty to follow! I intend to clear my entire backlog this summer, so look forward to it!

Oki: Hello all, I have ended my year-long hiatus! You might remember I broke my arm last year while covering Shingeki no Kyojin and My Hero Academia, Midnight and I will start joint coverage on those shows! It looks like I’ll be mostly covering long-running shows like MHAShingeki no Kyojin, and Overlord. There are some other titles I’m interested in but I’m actually participating in our Readers Request and Otome Madness events. If you have any requests for these events I’m happy to cover a ton of retro shows, from obscure masterpieces like Planetes to some good old-fashioned favorites. I’m excited most of all to talk about a bunch of otome games including the FREE steam game Cinderella Phenomenon and a ton of Voltage Inc titles. Stay tuned for all the fun stuff I’m going to be doing now that I’ve returned to the land of blogging!

Berry: Oh yikes yikes yikes. I don’t really like this season much. The reason why I didn’t take on more shows for Spring was because of personal life stuff, but this time it’s because hardly anything interests me. Am I being more picky? Jaded? Who knows, but I’m pretty disappointed, but that’s why I’m looking forward to the Reader Request project we’ll be doing. As for shows from this actual season, I’ve definitely got my eyes on Happy Sugar Life and Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight. Both those shows tickles my fancies in different ways.

MidnightDevont: I once again ended up interested in a few more titles then I thought I would at the start. This is why I need to stop looking at Ani-chart early and wait to actually read the preview. Still though, this season is kind of dry for me after a busy Spring. The things that really jump at me are “Muhyo to Roujii no Mahouritsu Soudan Jimusho” and “Satsuriku no Tenshi“. With the added ‘of course’ of Attack on Titan and Overlord because i’ve already sold my soul to those shows 2 seasons ago. I’m taking a gamble withBanana Fish that I am sincerely hoping works out. There are a few things I might pick up watching if I hear they are good or just out of sheer curiosity…I’m really hoping we get some good shows for the Readers Request reviews. I’ll be looking forward to going back and visiting some shows I may of overlooked in the past.

Nikolita: Lots of mecha and idol shows this season. As usual not a lot has grabbed my attention, but I think that’s because I’m maybe a little pickier more than anything else? ^^;;   I’m super excited about FLCL, and given that I’m interested in 2 other shows I’m happy that it’s only going to be spanning half a season at most. Island has me intrigued and I’m looking forward to Satsuriku despite it being a horror title. I have a couple guesses about how the latter might play out, and I’m curious to see if I’m right or not.

Pandora: Okay. I feel like this season is normal in volume of sports and mecha and weird RPG things. Every season. There wasn’t that many idol shows this time. There was few actually interesting items like FLCL, Backstreet Girls, Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro, and Happy Sugar Life. I’m mostly excited for Chio-chan becaue I feel like I’ll laugh a lot and it’s going to be an interesting ride. I’m also excited for Backstreet Girls because it seems like a weird show and that name (Backstreet Girls, Backstreet Boys, heh). Happy Sugar Life is my daliy dose of horror and thriller. I’ll need it. FLCL is just going to be good hopefully. I kinda want Taped-On Eyebrows (my friends and I call him Bushy Brows) to be in there..but it’s not going to happen probably. But I’m excited!

Fuzzy: Overall, the season is a bit underwhelming to me, but with the adaptation of Grand Blue and of course Attack on Titan S3, it has some heavy hitters! Hopefully there are some hidden gems as well among the myriad of isekai and idol shows. Tenrou: Sirius the Jaeger seems like it might be good, but it also might deep dive into the abyss and become the edgy show of the season. But I have hope for its potential! Not the craziest season for me, but not the worst either. Looking forward to being proven wrong!

Tsuyoku: Not the summer season I’ve been the most excited about which is slightly disappointing, but there’s still a couple things I’m looking forward to like Attack on Titan Season 3 and FLCL Progressive. On the blogging front I’m going with Planet With for sure and I’ll be doing at least a first impression on Backstreet Girls, Hataraku Saibou and Banana Fish. I’m pretty excited about the reader suggestion project too! Hopefully there will be great titles to choose from.

For those wishing to cover/watch Free S3, it is recommended you see the 1st prequel movie, Starting Days, since some characters from that movie will be appearing in this one. Otherwise context may be lost. (They also made guest appearances in the recaps and Take Your Marks.)
Also, Free’s previous director, Utsumi Hiroko, will be handling the Banana Fish anime. She stopped working with Kyoani some time after the end of S2 (presumably to go freelance). All subsequent Free anime have been directed by inhouse Kyoani director Kawanami Eisaku.
Is there a particular reason AngryAnime ‘s Readers Request is only accepting titles from before 2017?
I was hoping to submit Netflix anime B : The Beginning (which currently has a S2 in the works) for the Request.

I intend to make time to watch Free! Movie this week. I imagine it will give me an idea how I feel about S3 by the time premiere airs.
// Is there a particular reason AngryAnime ‘s Readers Request is only accepting titles from before 2017?//
The reason is because we wanted to focus on older titles rather than the newer ones. Initially we were going to make it a “Retro Review” special, capping it off either 2000 or 2005, but 2017 elected since most of the participants were not part of the team at the time, anytime before then would increase the chances of titles they may have missed out on, or something that wasn’t covered during that time that the readers had hoped was going to be picked up.
Not everyone has Netflix, so Netflix titles will be limited to those who have access to it. 🙂

IMO the latest Free movies are more like setups to get fans invested in S3. Keep the franchise alive, so to speak.
Plus with the Tokyo Olympics in 2 years’ time, the timing could not have been better.

        1. Nikolita

I have seen B: The Beginning and surprised myself by really enjoying it. Glad to hear there’s a S2 in the works, thanks zztop for the info! 😀

          1. zztop

I enjoyed B as well, but I hope S2 improves itself by meshing the 2 storylines better than the 1st. Let the young and old MCs bounce off each other more often.

            1. Tsuyoku

I watched it and I was planning to do a review, but the ending left me a bit disappointed even though I thought the trip to the destination was really interesting.
Unfortunately this made it kind of hard to tackle a review that I felt would be fair to the show. I kind of regretted not doing it the same way as I did with AICO, but maybe someone else will take you up on the show.
I am not sure if I’m excited about a second season or not tbh.

  2. Archaon The Everchosen

Grand Blue may look like a diving/school life manga from the outside, but beneath it shell is a manga about drinking lots of booze

  3. bedmonds

Oki, if you are already feeling Planetes then I’ll be interested for sure (I like the manga more but the show has some great aspects too).
Random other ideas (although really I’m just tossing out some shows I like that don’t get a lot of major interest these days): Zettai Shounen, Terra e…, Musekinin Kanchou Tylor.
The original Kino no Tabi might be nice, especially so people might contrast the two versions.
Oh well maybe something will catch someone’s eye! (And obviously no big deal. But maybe someone might find a cool show they like, reviews or not reviews).
    Great cour preview as always!

Wow, so much anime. Honestly, there’s a lot here that really intrigue me, but if I had to keep it down to a minimum number of two, I hope you guys cover Island and either Harukana Receive or Hanebado!. It’s a tie between the last two; they both seem so good, and I really hope you guys give it a shot. It feels like sometimes, though the initial premise seems horrible, it turns out to be very pleasant. Look at “A Place Farther than the Universe”; initially, it felt like a cute girls/slice of life, but it turned out to be more deeper than that. Don’t knock it til you try it.
With regards to Island, I don’t have much experience with anime that are visual novels, but since it was made by Studio Feel, I hope that it will turn out well. Honestly, I was rather disappointed that you guys never covered Tsuki ga Kirei, which was also made by Feel. That anime was really adorable (considering how it covered middle school romance), and it was honestly a really pleasant love story highlighting the troubles of youth. I really wished you guys covered it, so I’m hoping that Island will be just as good.
EDIT: Ok, after reading your post, I’m really sorry for being an idiot. I realize now that you were referring to old anime, rather than the ones for the upcoming season. I apologize for my stupidity, and I hope you’ll still consider my request to review Tsuki ga Kirei, a 12-episode anime which aired in April 2017.
EDIT 2: Sorry, I hope it’s not too late, and I hope that you guys aren’t upset about the multiple comments. If possible, if any of you guys are into slice of life, I hope you’ll consider reviewing Tsuki ga Kirei and possibly either Amanchu! or March Comes In Like a Lion’s first season. All three are great slices of life shows that really make me feel hopeful for the world.
It feels that based on previous posts, you guys seem to hate shogi anime with a passion. Is that because of the game itself, or is it more of the anime that featured the game? If you guys check out March Comes in Like a Lion, try not to think about the shogi too much. What really stood out to me was how the various characters interact with one another, and that made it a very compelling series to watch.

    1. Eva

No worries no worries, I compiled them all into one for you! (though now that I look at it, it may not be order;; whelp;;;;;; sweats nervously)
The Readers Request Submissions are open until the Saturday Night (July 7th).
I don’t think any of us outright hate shogi. But for me at least, shogi being the subject has nothing to do with it, it just so happens I have never been interested enough in the story to compel me to watch it. ^^;/

      1. jsyschan

I suppose that’s a fair point. The initial premise doesn’t really seem compelling to be sure; it’s certainly hard to tell what makes it good, but I think in a nutshell, it made me feel empathy for the characters as the story went on, kind of like Orange did. There’s some interesting videos that explain how the show portrays empathy, and I think that makes it worthwhile to watch.
Thanks for putting all the comments into one. Again, sorry for the multiple comments. I look forward to the results of this request.

  5. Mekem

I’ve got a couple suggestions of shows for the Reader’s Request event
Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace – A psychological grotesque crime drama that takes inspiration from Edogawa Ranpo’s works.
Yuyushiki – Cute-girls-doing-cute-things comedy about two lovable dorks and their blonde tsukkomi.
Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry – Cliche set up for a battle high school anime, but it’s actually surprisingly good.
Just thought I’d choose some personal favorite shows that might not typically be covered, stuff that gets kinda ignored.

  6. Miriki Takato

Not many shows take my interest this summer, I’m watching only AoT 3, BnH 3, Banana Fish for sure. Planet With is a surprise….I didn’t think it would be good but it did! Free ss 3 is…I finished other 2 seasons but season 2 feels flat to me that I don’t know whether watching ss 3 would be worth it.
Not really a reader request, but while it doesn’t include in the list since it’s Chinese, there is an animation series called Mo dao zu shi (the founder of diabolism) just started this week and it has great animation, historical fantasy setting. I read a little bit of spoiler of its original novel. It’s BL (a really light one) with a strong focus on plot more than the actual romance (a BL series focuses on plot? What? LOL). The romance is kinda….painful since the seme has to wait 13 years for the uke to be revived. This show is not a light hearted one but I recommend you guys to check out, even if it is Chinese.
I’m kinda bored with the cliche anime shows, so watching a Chinese animation with totally different feeling in it just….interesting.
