This was certainly not a direction I was expecting like AT ALL. I thought the whole episode would be centered around trying to get around Reid or something, but we maybe had like a few minutes of trying to think of how to deal with him before we pivoted. Now that I think about it, Subaru has never disclosed the information he’s from a completely different world aside from the Witch of Greed so it actually surprised me when it was actually addressed and questioned. For some reason, I really didn’t think too much on the fact that Subaru never confided in anyone from being in a different world and maybe I somehow gaslighted myself into believing that the others already knew.
It wasn’t until this episode did I even consider the thought that someone being unable to find information about Subaru would create a lot of suspicions at this point. Especially with how on edge everyone is over the trials, it does make sense that not knowing Subaru’s origins could cause mistrust to build. Especially in those who are not as familiar with him so I could hardly fault Echidna for being on edge about him. I do hope that Subaru will actually come clean about his origins one day, to which, might actually be fairly sooner than expected considering what happens at the end of the episode. But I’ll touch on that later because we still need to talk about the the Echidna situation.
I’ve been waiting for when Julius finds out about the Anastasia/Echidna situation since it was only a matter of time. I don’t think I talked about it in a post, but I was wondering why despite being very close to her, Julius didn’t catch on that it wasn’t actually the person he had served. But to be fair, the poor guy has had A LOT going on and is probably still in internal distress from everything that has happened to him. Not only has he been bogged down by the fact everyone aside from Subaru has forgotten him, which means he can’t use his spirit artes anymore, but he also forgot the person he was very close to as well. And that especially has made him incredibly sensitive about his position since it feels as if he’s desperately trying to cling onto whatever makes him “real” since being forgotten has essentially stripped him of everything. So finding out that the person he was supposed to be supporting/protecting this whole time isn’t even the person in front of him was probably broke him.
It also especially hurt him to find out that Subaru of all people figured it out before him. The guy seems genuinely hurt, not because Subaru knew, but because he didn’t seem to trust him enough with this information despite understanding why Subaru did it. Just as the two seemed to finally start understanding and growing closer to one another, I feel like this may have broken some trust Julius had for Subaru. It’s such an unfortunate situation where it feels like there isn’t anyone truly to blame. Which probably makes it a lot more frustrating for Julius. He’s already on heightened emotions from everything that happened and this could cause his insecurities and fear to spiral. His “perfect knight” facade is already faltering where he’s starting to lash out and act rashly, so I’m worried how much further this guy can be pushed. Especially since he’s lost a little bit of faith in the one person who still remembers him. I really hope he hangs on, but its shown that he’s starting to become a little emotionally unstable and the fear he feels could cause a “bad end” for the others and himself if he’s not careful. That last interaction he had with Subaru made me feel super uneasy.
I was also wondering why Echidna was so desperate to try and save Julius during his first fight with Reid. However, the answer they gave didn’t quite convince me since it made it sound like it was a matter of fact situation when it felt a lot more emotional. Maybe there’s more to it or that was it. Can’t say for sure at this time since I don’t want to take everything at face value, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
However, I don’t think anyone could have called that ending. Like, WHAT???? Now, I did accidentally see a spoiler that Subaru ended up losing his memory at some point, but I didn’t think it would happen NOW. Not to mention I thought he’d lose ALL of his memories, not reset him to literally the very first episode of the series. So him blurting out that he got transported to another world in front of Emilia and Beatrice might be how they all find out where he actually came from. Or at least that’s how it seems it’ll be addressed. But I never know what Re:zero has in store so I could be completely off base. But still, that twist is WILD.There are so many things that could go wrong at this point. Not only with Julius, but the way Shaula talked about spending years at the tower gave me a very foreboding feeling. And with Subaru back in the mindset of season 1, we are in for a not so fun time. Especially since upon rewatching Rezero from the start… Subaru was near unbearable. So this could either be a very interesting turn of events or just remind me how annoying Subaru was at the start of the series. Though I just realized that now because of this, Julius lost the last person who remembered him… MY GUY PLEASE DON’T SPIRAL. I fear for this poor guy’s mental state…
