Oh shit, that escalated quickly! The boy who had drifted down stream is in-fact the seed of The End of All Things. It is a type of curse that manifests in Humans, and unless they are killed before it’s too late, the will transform into a horrific monstrous blob of poison, sparing nothing in its path. The scary thing about this curse is that it just grows into a massive mass that continues to spread its pain and destruction. The only way to actually purge the pollution it is for the Poison Magicians to cleanse it and destroy it.
And that’s not all! We also learned the origin of the seed always comes from a Human. It’s a closely guarded secret, otherwise it’d create chaos from the hysteria it would cause among Humans. Go figure, they already got a witch hunt going. If they knew, it would quickly become a witch hunt among each other!
Though what I didn’t see coming was the fact Luna was once “The End of All Things” too. This is certainly perplexing considering she’s alive right now, and appears to be in the clear in terms of potential dangers to others. The only thing that really hinted that she had that history was the fact she cannot be touched because of the way her body houses the poison. But this certainly explains why she was so determined to save him, because she probably saw herself in him the moment she recognized the curse.
What I’m most curious about now is Luna’s relationship with mushrooms in general. Her master is a giant mushroom who recognized what had happened when she came to him. He had also been the one to help purify her when the curse was simply too much. However it seems Luna’s running on fumes at the moment. He master was the one to say that they’ll eventually wither away because they had absorbed “The End of All Things”… So it sure sounds like unless they can figure out a way to save her, this is going to end as a tragedy and that’s why we’re hearing the boy tell us the tale about how Luna is his beloved. Actually to make matters even more grim, the boy is sharing their story with the audience in past tense, and we do see her disintegrating into nothingness in the ED Theme, and the boy crying because she disappeared from his arms. Like shit… I didn’t see a tragedy label anywhere, but is this story going to be one?! The author is very good at ripping readers heart out (look no further than Gakuen Alice)! I do hope these two will get a happy ending considering how tragic their fates are as it is! Luna just can’t catch a break at the moment!
But at the same time, one must wonder: If Luna had once been the seed of “The End of All Things”, then how was she saved? Or was she saved in the same way she did for the boy, which was absorb all the poison in her body… That would explain to an extent why she’d know what to do if that were the case, especially since she turned to seek out help from her master, the mushroom in the woods. Frick, everything comes at a cost doesn’t it?
Speaking of the boy, after Luna removed the miasma from his body, it seems there was a side-effect that caused him to revert from a teenager to a young child again. It may possibly be related to the whole thing about him being the ‘seed’ we kept hearing about, which makes me wonder what his actual age is if that’s the case. (Actually on the extra note, I’m surprised to see the clothes shrunk too!)
As for Claude, it was nice to actually see more of things from his perspective this week. It helped us get a better feel of his character, as well as how he feels about Luna. It was very cute seeing him talk to himself on all the reasons why he was dropping by to visit her. But he certainly found himself in a difficult situation where he trusted Luna to follow her word to help her give the boy cover. Unfortunately the moment the truth came out of what was at stake, he understandably changed his mind, not just because he feared what the boy is doomed to become (unless Luna really did purge the root of evil completely), and doesn’t want Luna to find herself in danger because of it.
The gathering of all the Magicians was an interesting sight to say the least. We were introduced to a number of them who showed up through projections the shortly after Luna had returned from being purified. (So much for keeping it under wraps huh, didn’t even get the chance to do so.) The party consisted of the “Witch Council”, all wearing masks (some quite eccentric) to conceal their identifies from the White Witches. Among them was the Flame Magician, Water Witch (friendly with Luna), Beast Magician, Insect Magician, Fiore Magician, Crystal Witch and Eastern Witch, and finally, Claude’s own master, the Bird Magician. They were there to take the boy into their custody, and if Luna refused, she’d be punished for treason.
Among them, it’s the Water Witch that is the most friendly to Luna, and was advocating for her as much as she could so she wouldn’t get in trouble. But she did draw the line when it came to supporting her on keeping the cursed boy by her side. The one who appeared the most hostile among them was the Flame Magician. He wasn’t about to put up with any excuses or reasons, and sought to take the boy into their custody so he can be dealt with for once and for all. The only other one who was more actively involved in the conversation, though otherwise bit more sympathetic to Luna in this situation, was the Beast Magician. He understood why Luna was so adamant of keeping the boy by her side, and insisting that she had taken care of the poison herself. The rest were more or less merely observers of the whole thing, and didn’t add much input.
With that said, this was a great episode! I’m excited to see how the story will unfold, I’m quite relieved that because it focused more on Claude’s point of view this time, that we didn’t hear too much of the boy’s narration. But we did learn (the obvious at this point) that Luna is the boy’s beloved, and the way he speaks of her makes it sound like she’s no longer around… Hope I’m wrong about that though aha… I’m fine. [SOBS]
Look I only known Luna for three episodes now, but I HOPE LUNA WILL HAVE A HAPPY ENDING! FOR HER SAKE!
