There really starting to build all sorts of intrigue on the Watchman series. Such as, who even made them? Where are they now? Why are they so powerful? Why do they work well with people who are not “sane”? Where did Regto even get the gloves???? I have so many question but I don’t think any of them will be answered any time soon, but I guess that’s just been an ongoing thing for this series. Where it likes to set up all sorts of intrigue but won’t address them for a while. Though the series seems to have a good balance by keeping that intrigue but also keeps engagement.
The biggest question that I have is how the heck Regto even got those gloves in the first place. Though the thing that I did not catch is that he also seemed to have a book with the Watchman series logo on it. So he had TWO of the Watchman series items in his possession. I even went back to the first episode to get a better look and he was actually writing in it. Which makes me even more curious as to what Regto’s relationship with the Watchman series was. Especially since it resulted in the masked guy killing him over it. While it is still a mystery as to what the connection to the masked guy and the Watchman series is, similar to Zodyl, they seem to be trying to collect the Watchman series as well. Though that also leaves the question as to why they left Amo and Rudo with their respective items instead of taking them like what they did to Regto. However I think it also begs the question of who exactly was Regto. How did he have access to so many different Watchman series items? And how did he know where to get the gloves because clearly he didn’t always have them on hand.
Another interesting topic that was brought up was how if “normal” people use the Watchman series, it starts eroding away their sanity. However, the series seems to synergize with those who are have something “missing.” Which brings back what Amo said about those who have a “hole in their hearts,” the series seems to fill in if used by them. Which could be why the trafficker seemed manic to keep the boots with an almost Gollum vibe. I hope they explore this topic more in the future because I’m super curious as what this series truly does and why they don’t cause broken people to go insane by using them. Or I guess very specific broken people. Like, what are the parameters?
One of the questions that was actually answered in this episode of who was the one behind the Vital Instrument powered trash beasts ended up being none other than Zodyl. In his attempts to try and add more items to the Watchman series, he ended up finding a way to create more powerful trash beasts by having it form around a vital instrument. To which then leads into the reveal that everyone is inside a GIANT trash beast that he created to fly through the barrier separating the Ground and the Sphere. To which causes A GREAT amount of concern because we learned several episodes ago is that usually, people end up dying when they pass through the barrier and Rudo was more or less a freak accident or has a unique aspect that kept him alive. However, despite Rudo probably being okay to pass through, the other Cleaners might be in danger and if Zodyl forces everyone through, a lot of lives could be lost. It felt like such a threat about whether or not everyone would even survive passing through the barrier.
It was honestly hilarious how all of the Cleaners got super excited to find out that they were inside a trash beast. They may not be as adept in fighting other people, but they are experts in cleaning up trash beasts. I was initially confused as to why the Kaiju girl got so excited she gave away her position. But then it all made sense when you realize that killing trash beasts are their specialty. So kaiju girl might not be helpful in defeating the raiders, but she might prove herself more useful against this giant trash beast and possibly helping get out of there before they’re all forced to go through the barrier.
Also a little off topic, but Hiro Shimono seemed to be once again typecasted as the extremely loud and annoying coward character… The Fu guy gave off some serious Zenitsu vibes and I’m like: …not again. Though it is funny how Enjin just refuses to humor him in fighting since he seems to need Enjin to land the first strike before he can begin.
But oh my gosh, I think my absolute favorite part of the episode was when we switch back to the Santas. I let out the loudest cackle I have had in a while watching anime when Dear hit the wall with a light smack. And I ascended when it showed him from a faraway pov. I don’t know what it is about faraway shots and just hearing the sound, but it always makes me lose it. I also absolutely love the detail of the sound of his bapping the wall consistently gets louder the longer it goes on until it’s noticeably causing the walls to crack. Definitely want to see more how the two fight and how they plan on cleaning up the giant trash beast.
