Eva’s First Impression
What a fantastic premiere! I’m completely hooked! Just everything about the presentation of it was breathtaking. I can already tell this is going to be a wonderful story and I can’t wait to see it unfold!
When her parents are killed in a car accident, fifteen years old Asa suddenly finds herself completely alone. Yet the only one who decides to extends their hand to offer her a place of safe haven was none other than her aunt Makio, whom she barely knows (and vice versa).
The reason why Makio hardly knows Asa is due to having a estranged relationship with her late sister. Even after her sister’s death, much to her own dismay, Makio’s hatred towards her remains ever persistent. And yet despite that, Makio was the sole person in the room who extended her hand to Asa, offering her lifeline, a safe place to live without being trampled on. She couldn’t bear to listen to the absolute shit and gossip of their relatives during the funeral service. There was absolute no consideration to how Asa would feel upon hearing the wretchedness coming out of their mouths. That’s why as blunt as she may have been, she was simply upfront with Asa as to what to expect, and if she’s okay with that, she’s more than welcomed to stay with her. She was earnest, and knew the kanji for basin, and that’s when Asa readily took her hand.
She was also the one who help Asa begin processing her loss. And the reason why she was even able to begin doing so was all thanks to Makio. She suggested to start a journal. Record what people say and don’t say, express how she feels or doesn’t feel. By doing so, it helped Asa ground while she’s in the process of realizing she has suddenly found all alone in a barren desert. And in a moment when she’s desperately searching for a basin full of water, Makio who is described as the ‘Witch of Strange Lands’ is the one person who helps her do that.
Makio was the one person who understands what it feels like to suddenly find themselves lost and all alone to fend for themselves. She’s shy and awkward, and seems utterly hopeless when it comes to managing herself on a daily basis outside of her work of writing. Her house looked as though a disaster swept though, and despite her earnest attempts, you could see how clumsy she was with cooking. Despite her awkwardness, Makio’s an earnest and kind person at heart. She will not remain silent when she sees bullshit happening before her eyes. She may her case known of how she truly feels about Asa’s mother, and what to expect from her should they live together, but the most important thing she said was that Asa’s deserving of more beautiful things in life, and promises she will never trample on her feelings.
But most of all, Makio seems to be the best person who understand the loneliness Asa’s experiencing right now. She recognizes how lost she is, and by suggesting her to start a journal is her way of handing her a compass to draw out a map that will guide her forward. Not every thought has to be written, she doesn’t even have to write anything if she wants to. It’s simply there for her when she needs it.
With that said, I’m absolutely looking forward to the story that will unfold between them. We got to see in the beginning of the episode just how much Asa has helped improve Makio’s quality of life. From helping her eat better, to ensuring the house is tidy and not a mess that it always was in, these little things goes to show how these two will be able to support each other in their own ways. I’m looking forward to watching the bond will grow between them, and we’re already seeing them do just that when Makio asked Asa to sing a Justin Bieber song! God that made me laugh so hard!
On that note, since I very much would like to cover this series! Chances are this one may be one I’ll need to do frequent double-posts for if I feel my entries are too short. I will let you know if it comes down to that with a notice!
