Where do you watch English subs/download anime?

Not all of us have access to the legal streaming services like VizMedia’s, Hulu’s, Crunchyroll, etc… due to region protection so we end up downloading/streaming FanSubs or rips.

If you are looking for places where you can subscribe like FunimationCrunchyrolls PremiumHiDive, Amazon Prime (*US Customers Only), or just stream for free, other legal places to turn to are VizMedia, and Hulu.

If you are blocked due to region protection (mainly an issue for anyone OUTSIDE of United States) you can always check out other streaming sites that is very easy to find on Google.

NOTE: Also sometimes, and this happens: Not all the new shows are licensed by these companies so you are forced to turn to Fansubs no matter what. Go to MAL and look up the anime you’re looking for and there should be a FanSub group mentioned on the page.

***AND REMEMBER GUYS, IF YOU LIKE IT AND IT HAPPENS TO BE LICENSED, BUY IT!***

I understand you write your reviews for anime shows, but I was wandering if you (the team) were planning to review the recent Disney movie Frozen. I just really love your reviews.

    1. sidekick

you’ll have to wait for Eva to get back to you on that one ^^; I watched the movie awhile back though. Wasn’t very happy with it but eh.

    2. Eva

Unfortunately no, we will not be reviewing Frozen here. As this is an Anime base blog, we tend to stick more to Japanese Productions rather than the Western Film/Productions and such. However I’ll only be open to perhaps creating a section for it if it’s a category that will be actively used- which I would need to discuss with the team since I don’t particularly like making new categories that never get touched again.

On the extra note I haven’t seen Frozen yet since I’m choosing to wait for it to appear on Netflix/Television.

      1. Pablo

Ok! 🙂 Thanks for the reply and keep up with the great work!

Question for the whole team: How do you watch your animes? Any special location? Any rituals before watching? Or something like that…

    1. Eva

A quiet room for me because I can’t take notes and write out the entry if it’s noisy. A giant glass of water, crackers are a must- especially chocolate (usually mini Mars bars) if I happen to be tired, it helps keeps me focused. And always have tissues in case the episode ends up making me bawl like a baby. Oh and of course giving my family heads up to NOT interrupt me while writing unless it’s an emergency- because every time they do, they snapped me out of my zone.

  3. Jackie

What’s your opinion of streaming animes illegally?

    1. sidekick

Well I live in Southeast Asia where it’s impossible to stream anime LEGALLY (unless you count Animax that’s a cable TV channel that airs about 80% reruns so yeah) so my only option is to go through the illegal routes. I do make an effort to pick up merchandise, OSTs and DVDs whenever possible though.

      1. メがねえ三雷

        Oh, me too.
It;s not exactly impossible, you can watch a teeny tiny number of animes on DAISUKI.

    2. Eva

I think it’s okay when people don’t have access to legal streams, or titles that haven’t been licensed. However I always encourage people (who have this problem) to buy the DVD/BD release whenever possible because that’s the only way we can support them in return.

At the same time, I have a strong belief that illegal streaming definitely played a crucial part of encouraging companies to try and license new titles to fans sooner than later. Go back a couple of years, nobody (as far as I’m concerned) was releasing new titles like we see now days (aka at the same time Japan kicks off the new seasons). Anyone outside of Japan would have to wait at least two years or more before a company decided to license it and we were missing all the good stuff. Illegal streaming did play it’s part of showing companies that there is an international market, and thanks to that some people like myself have access to legal streaming + an offer to pay subscription to watch it as soon as it airs to support the anime industry.

I always support legal streaming whenever I can and post the links (which you can see in the above) for people who didn’t know existed or could use. I hope to expand on that for other regions such as Europe and Asia, but I haven’t found any yet.

I recently watched Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine and I loved it! And I was wondering if you could please suggest any other Lupin III animes you may know or animes as mature as the one mentioned. Thank you! 🙂

    1. sidekick

I haven’t watched Lupin III, but I hear the Castle of Cagliostro movie is great. The least Lupin III-like but definitely one of the best. It’s directed by Miyazaki if I’m not wrong. I plan to check it out soon too 🙂 In terms of artistic style though I doubt you’ll really find anything like Fujiko Mine. But if you want anime that are great departures from the usual anime styles you can try anything by Masaaki Yuasa. I suggest Kemonozume, Kaiba and Tatami Galaxy if you haven’t tried them out yet. They’re very experimental, but all tell unique, mature stories (although that definition of mature is different from that of Fujiko Mine’s). Otherwise you can try stuff like Serial Experiments Lain, Technolyze and Haibane Renmei (my personal favourite) for more serious stories.

    1. sidekick

Depends on what you like, but here are some series I do consider masterpieces, or are at least series you should try for yourself at least once in your life because they’re incredibly unique: Mushishi, Natsume Yuujinchou, Haibane Renmei, Millennium Actress and Whisper of the Heart are some of my favourite entries in the slice of life genre. Absolutely amazing stuff IMO.

If you’re into action series Baccano is your best bet (but watch it till the end, it’s confusing at first but the ending will tie everything together and you’ll have an incredible moment realizing how everything comes together), along with HunterxHunter 2011 (the masterpiece episodes are the later ones though, this one starts off a bit slow but it’s my all time favourite shonen) and you can also try the Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal OVAs (no need to watch the original series, you can jump straight in).

For romance I’d suggest NANA (my all-time favourite, but stay away if you can’t take melodrama) and Honey and Clover. For sports – Chihayafuru, and I hear Cross Game is amazing too. I also think you should give Aquarion EVOL a try even if you’re not into mecha, along with the 80s Macross Do You Remember Love? movie. Also, Revolutionary Girl Utena if you haven’t already watched it yet.

If you’d like recommendations from any other genre just leave another comment and I’ll see what else I’ve got if the stuff I just mentioned isn’t to your genres of liking!

    2. Eva

My personal favourites are: Kaleido Star, a Cirque du Soleil kind of show that is absolutely dazzling to watch (it’s only major flaw is it’s handful of fillers in S2 which you’re better off skipping because it doesn’t involve the heroine at all), Fate Zero, Chihayafuru, Eureka Seven, Rose of Versailles (PREPARE TISSUE BOXES, THIS WILL RIP YOUR HEART OUT), Revolutionary Girl Utena, Mawaru Penguindrum and the latest one addition to my list is Space Brothers (still on-going but absolutely flawless) oh and Clannad. I haven’t watched Afterstory yet because my heart is not ready.

  5. Oh, I watched mawaru penguindrum.
It’s one of my favorites of all time or something, you know?
It’s a pity none of my otaku friends watch it. Somehow they don’t like it…

    1. sidekick

Penguindrum isn’t really for everyone. It requires lots of thinking, intepretation of various scenes, many religious and philosophical references…it’s very open-ended and cryptic. If you don’t enjoy questioning and unraveling what you’re watching you won’t like Penguindrum.

    2. Eva

It can be confusing as hell, so it’s definitely not for everyone. It was actually the show that made me start taking notes while I’m blogging to keep track of everything ahahahaha XDDD. But that’s why I love it so much, because I just LOVE questioning and theorizing about stuff!

      1. lilgamergal

Then you may like the Kagerou Project if you already haven’t heard it, its like a puzzle xD

        1. Eva

The anime supposed to be coming out this Spring! 😀 I’ll be keeping my eye on that one! Thanks for the rec!

          1. lilgamergal

I know >.< I cant wait for the anime 😀 Shaft
            Shaft is animating
            *fangirls*

I also love the songs <3 Especially Heat Haze Days~ and the manga, though its a shame I cant read the novel TuT

            1. Eva

Well if it gets an abundant of positive feedback and requests to have licensed, there’s definitely a possibility. SAO proved that. If it becomes a hit- companies will look into licensing the Light Novels. So there’s always a possibility. :3 We can only hope for the best!

              1. lilgamergal

  6. ILUVTAKOYAKI

What’s up with Chris? I haven’t seen him for ages.

    1. Eva

School has been eating him alive and at one point he had no access to the internet. He is working on catching up on his coverages quickly as he can.

  7. Pablo

Eva is there any way i can pm you or just ask you a lot of questions about anime and what not since you know so much? XD

    1. Eva

If you have tumblr, then we can PM (or fanmail since no character limit) back and forth angryanimebitches.tumblr.com or we can discuss here on this page where other bloggers may be able to contribute to whatever questions you want to ask.

      1. Pablo

Ok Thx! I don’t know how well you know Lupin III, but I love it, because I grew up watching castle of cagliostro and I recently watched The Woman called Fujiko Mine and I know they just announced a short series for Jigen and was wondering if there were any other good shows about Lupin and its characters out there?
        Thx

        1. Eva

Hmm that’s a toughie for me. I am quite unfamiliar with Lupin III. Although I did watch The Woman called Fujiko Min, I ended up dropping it.
If my memory serves right, Oki might have some good suggestions, otherwise hopefully someone else on the team who is more familar with Lupin III will be able to help you out.

          1. Pablo

            Np thx anyways!

  8. Pablo

Eva why did you make me watch “The Princess and the Pilot”!!! IT MADE ME CRY SO MUCH AT THE END!!! Such a beautiful love story! And why do Japanese people love unsastifying endings???? I was waiting for him to take her away the entire time and then he just leaves…. 🙁

    1. Eva

*GROSS SOBBING* I KNOW RIGHT, I WAS LIKE OH COME ON, FLY AWAY WITH HER INTO THE SUNSET!!!!! Ah man I really want to read the novels, I really do. It would be so nice if Yenpress could license them…

      BUT MAN I LOVED THAT MOVIE. ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ

      1. Pablo

Yeah it is great! Do you know how many light novels there are? I looked it up on amazon.jp and only saw one and then i also saw some other works by the same author in the same world but google chrome translate didnt really help me find out what they were about…

        1. Eva

These are the Light Novels Titles~

          – Toaru Hikuushi e no Koiuta (The Pilot’s Love Song) five volumes long (finished)
          – Toaru Hikuushi e no Tsuioku (The Princess and the Pilot) 1 Volume, (finished)
          – Toaru Hikuushi e no Yasoukyoku (Nocturne of a Certain Pilot) 2 Volumes (finished)
          – Toaru Hikuushi e no Seiyaku (Oath of a Certain Pilot) just started in 2012 (Active)

That said, I am actually surprise to see that Pilots Love Song is only five volumes long, but that certainly would increase the chances of getting a license because it’s not as long as the other series. All we need to hope now is enough people to request it to catch their attention. I will bring it up as a recommendation when I get the chance to though.

  9. conanfan12345

    TT^TT Magi has ended…
(this isn’t technically a question, is it.)

    1. Vantage

      It’s not, but you’re close enough 😀

Magi had a good run! You should start following the manga if you aren’t doing so already – the current arc is really interesting, with lots and lots of world building. I’m writing up Ep 25’s post as we speak, so stay tuned!

      1. conanfan12345

Ah. Well, I am following the manga. Will you write a series review?

        1. Vantage

Unfortunately, I don’t usually do individual overall reviews any more – normally I sum up my overall thoughts in a paragraph or so at the end of the final post.

I’m really enjoying the manga at the moment! What do you think of the current “extended flashback” arc set in Alma Toran?

          1. igeisha

same person as before, just different account
Extended flashback… I do enjoy reading about Solomon’s past… and well I suspect Sheba is Gyokuen due to them having the same staff. And seeing Sheba’s feelings for the moment, I think she was crazed by love and heartbreak, or something.

            1. Vantage

Yeah, heartbreak seems very likely at the moment – although there might be something else as well (which may explain why even old friends like Ithnan defected). The version of Gyokuen depicted as one of Solomon’s three wise Magi (after he became king) still seemed loyal to him at that point, but something in her had changed fundamentally from her time as Sheba.

Also, the “true Fanalis form” Muu changed into during his little trip looks awfully similar to the Red Lion species. That means Morgiana and the Fanalis are descended from Alma Toran too :O

              1. igeisha

                Poor girl… Solomon rejected her.

  10. Noc

Hey guys! I only just realized this section existed!! *Extremely single-minded*

Anyhoo, I was wondering if you ever review movies as well as TV episodes/OVAs? I recently had the pleasure of watching the first Hakuouki movie and would love to read some opinions on it =D

When I first heard it was getting a theatrical release, I just thought it’d be the TV series cut down with maybe some new animation here and there…but it ended up being a completely new retelling!! I really enjoyed it. While some story details were lost, the pumped up action scenes and differing storyline made it very exciting- I think I enjoyed it as much as the TV series.

And since the franchise has enough money to make two movies, could there be some hope for an anime adaption of the new Urakata game!!? I sooo want it to happen XD There aren’t enough historical animes these days TT.TT

    1. Eva

Yup we do review movies, by rarely unfortunately. I did cover Hakuouki Hekketsuroku but dropped it because of RL circumstances. Kaitou on the other hand had covered Hakuouki: Reimeiroku

Once I can get my hands on the movie I’ll look into it, unless someone else beats me to it! XD

Ehhh I don’t know much about Urakata Hakuouki, I heard a lot of mixed opinions though. I wouldn’t be surprised however if it were to get an adaption since the Hakuoki franchise is so popular.

      1. Noc

So you do, which I would have seen if I’d searched the site a bit more lol single-mindedness strikes again!

I just downloaded it DX I’d definitely like to buy it once it’s available to me though. Now to wait for the 2nd movie, which came out in theaters the other week but won’t be out on disk for a few months >.<

I won't be able to play Urakata unless it gets a western release sadly, but I think I'd enjoy it since it has an RPG element to it. And it's historical so…you know. It can do no wrong in my eyes! Plus the heroine fights which I bet a lot of Chizuru haters would enjoy haha. They did such a splendid job adapting Reimeiroku, I have faith they could make a good anime out of it even if the game wasn't stellar. Overall though, I'm just dying to see the Ishin Shishi's side of things. Maybe people will live this time =P

  11. Pablo

I was just wondering if you guys had planned to do an overall review of Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou. Most of us dismissed this show before it even aired because the description of the plot made it seem as though it would be some pointless harem with a lot fan service but it has turned out to be a pretty comedic and entertaining show. Thanks!

    1. sidekick

It’s not on my watchlist and I’m not really planning on picking it up because I already have way too many series on hand, but I’m not sure about the other members. Stay hopeful for a reply! :>

    2. Eva

Sorry, I haven’t been watching Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou either. I am willing to give it a whirl to see if it is (as you said) better than most of us thought, and maybe if I like it enough, I’ll do an overall review (or someone else might if they are watching it). But I wouldn’t hold my breath for it. We will see!

      1. Pablo

If you guys can’t watch it’s okay. There are so many great series this season that I can’t blame you guys! Thank you anyways!!!

  12. Lucy

    Where’s Chris? I miss him.

    1. Eva

He has been extremely busy this season in general and especially this month of May with school and the tough exams, so he hasn’t had any time do much. We just have to be patient for him and wish him the best on his exams. :3

  13. Hyuudo

With all due respect, when is Naruto being covered again. I know it was on a filler hiatus, but it has been weeks since its latest filler episode. Just curious is all

    1. Vantage

I had no idea it was back! The episode titles looked like they were still on that Kakashi ANBU filler arc.

I’m a bit tied up IRL at the moment, but I’ll do my best to smash out some reviews for 362-4 in the near future. Thanks for reminding me!

  14. Hyuudo

No problem. Happy to help. Can’t wait!

    1. Hyuudo

      Wow just realised that wasn’t a reply… Eheheh…
