WHY WOULD THEY LEAVE US LIKE THAT. The WHOLE episode, I was constantly questioning: WHAT HAPPENED TO JULIUS???? And GAH… I’ll get into that later, but man, this finale overall felt like such a downer because they literally didn’t win. It’s such a big contrast from all the other seasons where they always end with a pretty big victory. But here, they only managed to squeak by because Lust and Gluttony ended up retreating. If things continued on, I’m not sure if they’d be able to go without any actual losses, even with Reinhard. Though I wish we got to see how Reinhard fared against the other Bishops like Lust and Gluttony. But maybe it’s being saved for another time. Maybe we’ll get to see him at least fight Lust since we don’t have much to go on about her ability and it seems like they’re tracking down Gluttony next season.
I’m actually surprised that Beatrice was actually able to hold off Gluttony (even though a lot of them did get their names eaten) and was able to almost finish him off with the help of Felt and the staff that she brought. Though I assume if the new Gluttony that came out of a freaking jojo body didn’t show up out of nowhere, they might have been able to defeat at least one of the Gluttony’s for good. Which is a big shame because I was honestly hoping we could finally get Crusch’s memories back because I miss my girl boss queen. But just like with the inevitable showdowns with Gluttony and Lust again, this too will have to wait another day. I do feel a little irked by the fact that the third Gluttony showed up so randomly at the end of the fight, but whatever.
Also gosh, seeing Otto’s skin torn off to his bone was HORRIFYING to see. Poor guy is probably gonna be bedridden for a long while because that was BAD.
The most interesting part during the Gluttony battle was how visceral Gluttony’s reaction was to eating Felt’s “name.” I had a feeling that it wouldn’t work since we knew that Felt was a name that was given to her in the slums and not her actual birth name. As far as Felt knows, that is her real name, but it’s definitely a really good shield against Gluttony’s abilities. So it may be advantageous to have her around when they do fight Gluttony again since she’s the only one who probably has a resistance against the name stealing ability. Though considering she’s going with Reinhard to transport Wrath to the knights, she might not be able to be utilized since the fourth season insinuates they will be going after Gluttony.
I’m not surprised that Wrath isn’t dead since it didn’t show a confirmation, but I am surprised that they managed to capture her. Priscilla sure is a woman of mystery. We do not understand or fathom her ways. Either way, the confrontation went as well as I would have expected considering how unstable she is emotionally and mentally. Though I burst out laughing when Emilia IMMEDIATELY whipped out an ice hammer and slammed Wrath into the wall after licking Subaru. Gurl was QUICK lol. Everything about Wrath is just unsettling and I don’t even know if capturing her was worth it since she seems to only be focused on how Petelgeuse can come back through Subaru. Hopefully that won’t be the case, especially with how much of a touching scene of remembrance and familiarity the original Geuse had with Emilia when Subaru used the Unseen Hand on her heart. I would hate for that image of him be tarnished with the return of Petelgeuse.
Everyone is probably sick of hearing it but I will still repeat it: I just absolutely LOVE Emilia. I cannot emphasize enough how much she’s changed since the first season. She’s not afraid to speak up about her beliefs and carry out her plans. Even when challenged by Priscilla, she held her ground and went through with the plan to freeze all of the people that were turned into monsters by Lust. To which, Priscilla most likely gained a newfound respect towards her while also viewing her as a real threat to her now for the throne.
Everything is all nice and happy after the battle that you can’t even say was won… and then they hit us with THAT scene at the end. The entire time I was wondering what happened to him and considering he hadn’t been addressed AT ALL. Not to mention when Ricardo didn’t bring him up while he and Subaru chatted felt like a red flag and I figured his name was most likely eat and lo and behold. I wasn’t surprised that his name got taken, but I was surprised that this season ENDED LIKE THAT. Though it seems like his situation is different compared to Rem and Crusch. While Rem become comatose while no one remembers her and everyone still remembers Crusch, but she lost her memories, Julius seems to retain his memories as far as I can tell since he seemed familiar with Subaru but everyone else forgot about him. With his name taken, he’s essentially lost EVERYTHING. His ranking and respect within the knights, gone. His friendships with the others, gone. His camp doesn’t know who he is anymore. It was also brought to my attention that if no one remembers him, the spirits he utilizes to fight wouldn’t remember him either which was something I hadn’t even considered until someone mentioned it. He was literally stripped of everything and left nameless and most likely powerless. And let’s not even factor in how he also lost his brother.
I really like Julius, so seeing how everything he’s built up just be stolen from him like that is honestly heartbreaking. The only saving grace to his situation is ironically Subaru since the memory erasure from Gluttony doesn’t affect him. Most likely due to him not being part of this world in the first place. Makes me wonder if Al remembers Julius as well, but that is besides the point. After all his grumbling towards the dude, this is probably a great opportunity for them to get closer and for Subaru to lose his dumb bitterness towards him since he’s literally the only one Julius can rely on right now. And seeing that he is also accompanying them since he’s in the fourth season’s poster, he will and Subaru possibly will become bros by the end.
This season was pretty rocky. It had it’s highs but it also had it’s lows and I didn’t feel completely satisfied with how certain things wrapped up. Not to mention I feel like I am still left with so many questions that have not been answered. Like: When did Gluttony get Julius’ brother? What happened to the husband of Garfiel’s mom?? Are we not going to address Subaru’s gross leg and arm??? Are Reinhard and Wilhelm good with each other???? Where did Felt even get the staff????? I need answers! Not to mention I wish we got to see how Al even helped Beatrice. While I love how we get to see how so many characters have progressed, there were still some pacing issues and feeling disatisfied with how things turned out kind of took me out of it a little. However, I will say I have grown in my appreciation for both Reinhard and Priscilla. I still want to know more about Priscilla, but Reinhard definitely is the character that has grown on me the most. I like how casual and matter of fact he is with his OP abilities and it’s just so amusing watching him work and bounce off of other characters especially Subaru, Felt and Greed. The guy is great and I hope we get to see more of him. We didn’t get a whole lot on Priscilla, but I’m definitely a lot more curious about her and she’s a lot more than the “I am the main character of this world” type of person.
Overall, I’d have to give this season a 7/10. Didn’t feel as strong as the previous two seasons but I do appreciate that we didn’t have as many return by death moments and that Subaru has learned to not treat his life as expendable. Though he did relapse a little when Lust was torturing him, but in that circumstance, I can’t really blame him. Also Emilia being the confident ice queen that she is was always such a pleasure to watch. Hopefully the fourth season doesn’t take another four years to come out. Until next time!
Shadow, Joshua was eaten sometime before the first fight Julius/Roy fight given during their second Julius abandoned the approach of hiding his name, showing he thought Roy had info on him.
The husband of Garfiel’s mom is likely the black dragon in the government office that was frozen by Emilia given he was an official working there. The problem is that only Otto would be able to speak with him and understand that he’s the husband using his Divine Protection as he had no way of knowing himself.
I don’t think they’re going to address Subaru’s arm and leg since we know from Capella (Episode 65) that Capella’s dragon blood and her body are two separate things, so it’s not easily cured, and there’s a benefit to Subaru’s arm and leg being this way since he now has advanced healing properties for his right leg and arm.
Reinhard and Wilhelm are definitely not good. Reinhard’s eyes were obscured (Episode 65) ’cause he’s suffering while fulfilling his duty as the Sword Saint. ‘Cause Reinhard was adamant that the corpse soldier Theresia was just a corpse soldier, meaning he was justified in killing her, Wilhelm said that he had nothing left to say to him and urged “Sword Saint Reinhard-dono” to do his duty in using his immense strength on the battlefield, reducing Reinhard to merely being a weapon. Earlier in the season, Wilhelm wanted to close the gap with Reinhard, but his choice to refer to Reinhard in an impersonal way shows that he doesn’t intend to do so anymore.
As for where Felt got the staff, she mentioned in Episode 63 it was gifted to her by a sorcerer in her camp and that it was back in the inn they were staying at, so we knew where she had gotten it from.
As for why Lust and Gluttony retreated, it may have seemed like plot armour, but it wasn’t.
It’s clear with Regulus’s Gospel making him believe he’d meet the Emilia camp again despite it not happening until the fourth loop of Arc 5 is that Gospels are meant to keep the world on a particular path rather than being an object that makes the holder’s goals come true.
This was likely why Capella went to attack the government office the heroes had made their base when if she had stayed with Theresia and Kurgan both Wilhelm and Garfiel would’ve both died.
It’s also likely why Capella was certain she accomplished all she had needed to and was leaving, when her pursuing Al, Felix, and Anastasia could’ve resulted in one or more of them dying, and it was likely the same reason Rui left when she could’ve butchered them all since Beatrice only had one magic crystal left that she was saving for bringing back Puck.
Roswaal’s not-quite-Tome of Wisdom was basically a tool meant for Echidna to keep the world on a particular path, and it wouldn’t be a stretch if the Gospels had a similar purpose.
