Eva’s First Impression

We’re onto the second magical girl themed title of the season, and I had a blast with this premiere!

Magilumiere Magical Girl Inc. is a small start-up amidst the five hundred magical girl companies that have been propping up due to the abundance of “Kaii”, monsters causing great dangers and disturbances. A Magical Girl’s job is to get rid of the “Kaii” before they grow too big and get out of control, so in other words, they are basically just a glorified pests-exterminators.

Today we got to see two large and problematic Kaii. The first one being an eye-bally monster during a highway chase– and then a Frostoid. When a Kaii is left alone for too long, they can grow too much and powerful and that’s when they need more than one magical girl at the scene (unless they just happen to be super OP, but we’ve yet to meet one who has such talent). Both occasions prompted Koshigaya Hitomi, who typically does her jobs solo because she’s the only magical girl unit at the company, have to do the ill-advised, of seeking assistance from regular civilians. The first instance in the beginning of the episode was because the highway one ate her freaking BROOM,so she had to rely on two gutsy motorists to be her ride. The other, the Frostoid, was just too powerful to manage on her own, and they simply could not afford to wait thirty minutes for reinforcements from another company. So she had to asked for volunteers to assist her, and that’s where Kana stepped in.

In order to fight against the Kaii, their powers are dependent on software and magic devices, such as their BROOMS they use to fly, their magical staffs and capture device. In order to do well, one needs to have a good grasp of how they function. However we can see there’s still lots of flaws as Hoshi had repeatedly complained about the Devs making it too complex and difficult to use throughout the episode.

We first meet Koshigaya Hitomi only employed Magilumiere Magical Girl Inc. at the moment, so she has a lot on her hands when dealing with the Kaii. But she enjoys her job, and the people at the company. She’s got the tough girl with a big heart attitude, and she’s pretty cool. I think it’ll be a good balance between her energy and Kana’s, who’s more on a quiet side.

Then we have Sakuragi Kana, who is a grad having difficulty passing her interviews to land a job. She has earnestly prepared for them, thoroughly studying a company from top to bottom. She even goes as far as translating stuff from another country to get every bit of information that might give her an edge to the competition. Unfortunately because she’s often reiterating things she read, rather than speaking in her own words of why she wants to and would be the perfect fit to work there.

But make no mistake, Kana’s strengths lies in her sharp memory and attention to detail. We saw this play out when a cafe clerk who couldn’t remember all the orders given to her, Kana repeated what she had missed. The other instance was when she could recall the demo of the magical girl software (Li’l Ammo, a Magic Management App) when she applied for a software company some time ago, so she understood how to use it. And thanks to that knowledge, she was also able to identify that Hoshi was still using her preset settings from her previous battle. So not only she realized Hoshi was wasting ammo, but she was being highly inefficient because the type of ammo she was using that was ineffective against the Frostoid Kaii. So Kana really came in clutch for Hoshi, because otherwise it would be very difficult for her to manage on her own!

Kana definitely dodged the bullet by wisely choosing to withdraw her application from the company after witnessing the consequences of neglecting to properly and thoroughly do a year Kaii inspection. They had cut corners by skipping rooms they rarely use– which obviously was a stupid call because gee, obviously the rooms that are left unchecked makes them a prime environment to serve as a Kaii den! Oh and if that wasn’t bad enough, you’d think they would have at least a Magical Girl company on speed-dial for emergencies, but by that’s besides the point. Either way, this company was a hot mess and Kana dodged the bullet by (wisely) choosing to withdraw her application. After all said and done, I sure as hell wouldn’t want to work at a place that didn’t take their Kaii inspections seriously, but I digress.

Fortunately thanks to assisting Hoshi, Kana has been referred to a new job opportunity at Magilumiere. Working at a Magical GIrl company wasn’t something Kana had considered, but she was pretty open-minded about it– until she saw their boss was dressed as a magical girl. Hahahaha! Either way, it’s clear Magilumiere is a place that would appreciate her sharp memory and match her nature of wanting to be helpful to others. So she has finally found a job– though it’s probably not what she expected when she agreed to join them.

Overall great start, and most of all, I’m just delighted and eating very good right now with all the magical girl themed shows coming out right now. It’s a great time to be a magical girl fan! I’m enjoying the premise of using tech-based ‘magic’ that is dependent on the software’s programming. It really does add a layer of complexities where bugs in the software, or in this case, the program being difficult to understand and use can make the job more difficult than it needs to be. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of problems they’ll have to work around and resolve, all while on the job no less!

With that, I’m looking forward to seeing how this story will unfold! I’m pretty set on covering this one, I will be giving this three episodes to get a feel on whether this coverage will be done on a weekly or biweekly basis since it’s a comedy. Varies on how much there is to to discuss, but unlike Acro Trip, I think this might have enough substance to cover on a weekly basis, if not, I’ll just take the biweekly coverage (double-posts) approach.

Possibility of Watching: GUARANTEED
Possibility of Covering: HIGH

It feel like we’re in another era where lesser known magical girl anime can start to rise up.
