Episode 11

Sorry for the extremely late post, but I had to deal with a few real life situations that needed my attention.

This was literally just a Loid simping episode because goodness… I am exhausted by both Becky and Fiona. As much as I appreciate Becky as Anya’s first official friend, I can’t stand sub plot points with her fawning over Loid and hoping to “break him up with Yor.” While she isn’t as obnoxious as I find Fiona, it’s still bad that in her mind, she’s still looking to break up a “married couple.”

Becky has always been a character who seems to think and act like she’s way older than she actually is. Which is probably why she ends up taking such a strong liking to Loid because he is the “ideal male lead” in the dramas she tends to watch despite being way too young to be watching those kinds of things. I am pretty curious as to why she is the way that she is and I have this fleeting hope she ends up falling for a guy her own age in the future… but this episode ain’t it.

I honestly hate the Becky tires to pursue Loid sub-plot. It’s just so unnecessary and it just feels like a worse situation than even with Fiona. Especially since Becky is this precocious child who thinks she can gain Loid’s attention. Like GURL, you’re six. STOP IT. Ain’t no way Loid is going to be romantically interested in you. Kids tend to get these little crushes on adults all the time, but the fact Becky believes she has a chance and wants to continue pursuing, that’s when I’m just: NO. So this episode was just a whole lot of me rolling my eyes at this freaking child. Also wow, the sheer audacity of Anya wanting to help Becky because she’ll get something out of it. SO MUCH FOR LOYALTY TO THE FAMILY. Though it is true that kids are extremely selfish and typically think about the short term rather than the long term. But it does break my heart a little that despite the bond Anya has built up with Yor, she would give that up for nice things.

Though I will say the funniest part is Yor getting freaking HIT by a car but just shrugs it off like someone bumped into her. GURL, you just got hit by a CAR. How are you still okay???? I know she’s sturdy but GOODNESS. And Yor continues to be a menace to society by absolutely DECIMATING a ring the bell game. Showing us that yes, she is the strongest lol.

Other than that, this episode just felt like a whole lot of nothing except for Loid simpage. I just do not care about Fiona and her feelings for Loid so I felt absolutely nothing for her part of the episode. I saw what they were trying to go for… but I just don’t care so I just ended up rolling my eyes at the entire segment.

Episode 12

Just like an episode previously this season, whenever it’s a Bond centered episode… I’m just not particularly interested. Coming off of the previous episode, I was a bit disappointed they chose this to be the final episode of the season since this is also a chapter While I wasn’t particularly happy with how they ended last season either, at least that one felt plot relevant. It even got to a point where I even had the temptation to just skip through parts because I was getting impatient. (Ended up not doing that, but the sentiment was still there)

While it delves a little into how Bond and Anya are different on how they believe if they are useful, they won’t be abandoned. It’s still hard for me to really view Bond as his own character rather than just a pet. But that’s just a me problem so this episode wasn’t particularly interesting to me. While I do understand Bond’s roll in the story, he just doesn’t feel as relevant to me as opposed to the other members of the family. When he was introduced, he honestly felt more like a piece of Anya’s story than his own character. Especially since Bond’s future sight goes really well with Anya’s mind reading. So that might be a big reason as why I feel like I don’t feel as engaged when Bond is the main character in a scenario.

It is nice to have him and Loid bond… no joke intended, but it’s there I guess lol. Especially since it was nice to have Loid’s stoicism broken for a moment and seems to be softening as his time with the family goes on. While he keeps all of them at arms length in a manner of speaking, he is still slowly developing a genuine relationship with each member of the family whether he realizes this or not. In a sense, it does demonstrate a little bit of Loid’s character development by showing the chips in the wall he built up to protect himself.

Final Impressions:

Not gonna lie, but I was very underwhelmed with this season. There were a few good eps, but overall the pacing just didn’t feel right and I didn’t enjoy the Yor arc as much as I would have liked to. It’s just very unfortunate that one of my favorite mangas just did not entertain me as much in the anime. I’m actually kinda bummed about that because this series feels so much more charming and funny in the manga. At this rate, it feels like I’m just going to end up rehashing my thoughts and feelings for the first season so I’ll just keep it brief.

I do like we got more Yor character development since it felt like she was being left out a lot of the time through out the first season. So I’m glad we got a whole arc dedicated to her, even if I wasn’t as enthused by the outcome and how it was ultimately handled.

I think it’s safe to say that I may have to stop my coverage of Spy x Family after this season because I feel like I’m just disappointed by the adaptation every season. There are some fun to be had, but it all feels like the negative outweighs the positives for me. So I may just keep to reading the manga and not bother with the anime anymore. At least not watching the entire episodes and possibly just picking and choosing which parts to watch. I may have to give this viewing a 6/10. Which hurts me because I love this series… but the anime just doesn’t seem to do it for me.

Becky’s crush for Loid has attracted a lot of mixed receptions. I remember there’s even a twitter post went as far as accusing Endo of promoting lolicon or pedophilia because of Becky’s crush. Better not to think too much about it and try to think of it as Becky acting like a daughter who say things like wanting to marry her dad when growing up without being aware what it means. Children tends to be easy to be influenced by shows without fully understanding what it means and all.

I think other than Yor’s demonstration of her inhuman capabilities in episode 11, that moment when she and Becky has a miscommunication in regards to how Yor won over Loid’s heart was also funny. She took Becky’s words literally due to her job as an assassin. XD

Reading your posts about Spy x Family is always enjoyable, but I understand if you decided not to cover the anime anymore. I do admit that I’m also disappointed that they ended the season with this episode. Maybe it would be better if they save the Cruise Ship arc for the last.

But if Spy x Family: White Code movie is out overseas, perhaps you’ll try consider covering it after you watched it? 😀
