As always we would like to thank our lovely contributors both on Patreon and Ko-Fi! We truly appreciate your support! This season, we would like to give a special shout out to our patron Dario who has kindly continued to support us for a whole year and onwards! Thank you so much for your patronage Dario!
Seasonal Updates:
- Summer Hiatus: Eva – Taking a breather, will be back for the Fall 2021 Season!
- Quick Note: Resuming YGO 5D’s as of Mid-August: Initially I was supposed to resume it in the Spring, but due various circumstances that required me to cut down my workload, I had to push it to a later date. I wanted to start it again in July, but I realized it would be in my best interest to start again in Mid-August. This way I can at least get a much needed full month of proper rest and a little bit of wiggle time to queue up some entries without having to delay it any further. Thank you for your patience!

Eva: FFFFF— Just when I committed to a Season Hiatus, I7 swings by and announces it’s coming back this summer! IDOLISH7 WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?!?!?! [PAINNNNNNN] In all seriousness, I can assure you it’s in good hands.
Berry: Finally we’ll get to meet Zool! I don’t know who these guys are but I really love their music lol. I’ve heard how crazy and stressful Part 3 is, and if I was suffering with Part 2 then….well yeah. I’m both scared but extremely excited. I just love Idolish7 so much!
Shadow: Because Eva is taking her hiatus, I’ll be taking over the coverage for the first part of the third season and I am HYPED. I just recently finally sat down and downloaded the app for i7 and it’s done wonders to get me excited for this upcoming season. Idolish7 tends to come and go like a storm as it’s crazy when it’s around and just goes quiet when it passes so it’s been out of my mind for a bit. But after getting the app and playing it, it’s been in the forefront of my attention. So being able to cover this upcoming first part of the season is a true pleasure. But buckle up, if you thought the 2nd season was stressful, you are not prepared for what this season has in store.
Quietcupcake: I miss these boys so much!! I’m really happy Shadow, Eva, and Berry introduced me to the series because it has just brought me a lot of joy to follow these characters. I can’t wait to meet Zool and see what sort of chaos they’ll bring to the story!

Aquatope of White Sand

Source: Original
Animation Company: P.A. Works
Website: https://aquatope-anime.com
Premiere: July 9, 2021 @ 00:00 (JST)
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Mystery, Slice of Life, Supernatural
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Synopsis: The anime takes place at Gama Gama Aquarium, a small aquarium in Okinawa, an hour’s bus ride from Naha. Kukuru Misakino is an 18-year-old high school student who works there, and she knows about the “secret” of the aquarium: sometimes you can see mysterious things. One day Kukuru meets Fuuka, standing in front of a water tank with flowing hair and a tear rolling down her cheek. Fuuka has given up on her dream of becoming an idol and she has run away from Tokyo to Okinawa. Wanting to find a place to belong, Fuuka earnestly asks to work at the aquarium. The anime follows Kukuru and Fuuka as they deal with the issues of the secret of the aquarium and a looming crisis of its possible closure.
~*~
Berry: I sure love aquariums, we need more anime about aquariums. Like Shadow said, PA Works originals can be 50/50. Glasslip traumatized me so much that I still go into PA’s shows very cautiously even though I enjoyed shows like Shirobako and Irozuku. Glasslip was so long ago but it was so bad…anyway, this seems lovely and it’s set in an aquarium so I’ll check it out.
Shadow: After Irozuku, I’m a bit more eager to watch stuff from PA Works because you know it’s going to be GORGEOUS. Their original stories tend to be 50/50, but I’m definitely willing to see if this one is any good.
Quietcupcake: This one looks so lovely! This one looks like it has quite a bit to offer with the story. We’ll deal with mystery and the supernatural, but it also looks like one where we’re just going to have fun hanging out with these characters. Not to mention, if the soundtrack is anything like the PV, I’ll probably fall for this one. Maybe this anime will help me overcome my fear of fish haha.
Nikolita: It’s an original story, there’s a little supernatural, what sounds like the start of a great friendship – what’s not to like? This anime reminds me of when I went to see the aquarium in Toba. I’m super excited for this title!

The Duke of Death and His Maid
死神坊ちゃんと黒メイド | Shinigami Bocchan to Kuro Maid
Source: Manga
Animation Company: J.C. Staff
Website: https://bocchan-anime.com
Premiere: July 4, 2021 @ 22:00 (JST)
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Synopsis: Cursed by a witch as a child, a young duke gained the unwanted power to kill every living thing he touches. Forced to move away from his family and into a large mansion deep in the woods, the duke is treated as if he does not exist and is continually shunned by his peers.
However, he is not entirely alone. Rob and Alice, his butler and maid, are always by his side. Alice loves to tease him, and as their relationship grows, the duke makes it his goal to break free from his deadly curse. Of course, he is going to need some help, and who better to do this than the various inhabitants of the supernatural?
~*~
Berry: I really like this premise with the young duke’s curse. I think it can make for a really emotional story, though it does look like it’ll have a lot of silly comedic parts. I’m really not a fan of the “female character teasing the wimpy main male character” premise we’ve seen a lot recently, so I’m hoping we won’t get too much of that and focus more on the emotional side of it. I’m not too sure what to expect but I’m still really looking forward to this.
Quietcupcake: I go back and forth with this one. The premise reminds me of the show Pushing Daisies and I really enjoyed what I saw of that (though, it seems like our duke can only kill things instead of bring them back too). I’m interested how the story plays out and how these characters grow and interact with each other. Personally, I’m kind of looking for a little more drama with this one, but perhaps I’ll be pleasantly surprised!
Nikolita: I’m mostly curious to see how the curse will be broken. The duke does make for an unusual character though, what with him being unable to touch living things lest they die.

Remake Our Life!

Animation Company: feel.
Website: https://bokurema.com
Premiere: July 3, 2021 @ 22:00 (JST)
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Synopsis: Hashiba Kyouya is a 28-year-old game developer. With his company going bankrupt, and him losing his job, he returns to his hometown. Looking at the success of creators of his age, he finds himself regretting his life decisions as he lay distressed on his bed. As Kyouya wakes up, he discovers that he has traveled ten years back to the time before he entered college. Will he be able to finally make things right?
This is a story about a failed person who is given a second opportunity to follow his dreams.
~*~
Berry: Okay so this sounds really similar to ReLife and I adore that show. Same premise of an adult character being unsatisfied with their life only to revert back to when they were younger so they can learn about themself and make things right. If this show will be anything like ReLife then I will be a very happy person so I’ll give this a shot! Also yay Argonavis and Poppin’Party~ c:
Shadow: The artstyle to this looks incredibly generic so just judging on that alone, I may just give it a pass. But the premise seems interesting and the story could prove to make up for its lackluster character design. So if I hear if it’s actually good, I may give it a watch.
Quietcupcake: The premise is definitely what draws me in to this one. I’m interested to see how he decides to use his second chance, but I definitely worry that this might fall a little flat… I’ll definitely be on the look out for what others are saying though and give it a chance if other are enjoying it! Also, I was surprised to see that Argonavis and Poppin Party are doing some of the music!
Nikolita: I’m definitely curious about this one! Will Hashiba land a different job? Start a new romance? Make some new friends? There’s a lot of potential here. The story could go in several different directions.

Trailer: PV 1 | PV 2 | PV 3
Synopsis: The Kouka Kageki Musical Drama Academy is a high school that teaches musical theater like that at the Takarazuka Revue, and splits its actresses into those who play male and female roles. Ai Narada is a former idol who becomes a musume-yaku (female role) actress and meets Sarasa Watanabe, a simple farm girl who is an otoko-yaku (male role) actress.
~*~
Berry: After finishing a rewatch of Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight (still a great show) I’m SO excited for this show! It has the same feel and premise with the takarazuka revue, but it looks like it might be even more dramatic. I’m not sure what to expect here but it looks gorgeous so I’m looking forward to it.
Quietcupcake: AAAA I am really hyped for this one! I’ve been watching the character introductions and all of the girls seem like a lot of fun! Poking around some forums it looks like this has the potential to jump into some darker topics, which will be interesting to see how they are explored in the anime. I’m hoping that it has a nice balance of fun times and dramatic moments!

Synopsis: Second season of “My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!”
~*~
Berry: The first season was good but I’ll admit that the joke of Katarina being an idiot and everyone loving her was starting to get old, which is a problem with comedy anime that center on one joke. So I’m mildly worried if this season will just do more of the same and I’ll get tired of it. So I hope they change things up a bit and definitely work on developing the characters more.
Shadow: The first season was definitely a fun watch (especially during the time where anime the amount of anime took a hit) and it made for a good laugh. I’m curious as to what else they can do since the first season wrapped things up nicely enough. Though I do wonder if they’ll take some time to develop the guys more since they more or less felt like they were just there and didn’t really add as much as the series seemed to make them out to be a big focus when they actually weren’t.
Quietcupcake: The first season of this anime was an absolute joy to watch. There was a good deal of humor and at the end of the day this anime just made me feel happy. (honestly, I can’t believe I cried near the end haha). Katarina is such a fun protagonist, I can’t wait to see what she’ll face this time around!

Synopsis: Yuigaoka Girls High School is a newly established school that lies between the Omotesando, Harajuku, and Aoyama neighborhoods of Tokyo. The story centers on its first batch of students. With no history, no upperclassmen or alumni, and no reputation, it is a school full of unknowns.
Five girls, among them Kanon Shibuya, have a fateful encounter with school idols. Kanon decides, “I love singing. I want to make something come true with song!” Many feelings converge upon a star that has only started to grow. The future is blank and full of possibility for these girls, and their story that everyone will make possible has only just begun. Soar with your wings, our Love Live!
~*~
Berry: H-Haha…still haven’t finished Nijigasaki yet. Whoops…but once I do I’ll check out Superstar! Making the group of girls smaller is a huge change in the series and that alone makes this pretty interesting so I do want to check this out eventually. But ahh…the return of the orange genki protagonist huh…
Quietcupcake: I am too far into the Love Live! series to not at least give this one a chance. With each group until now we’ve always had 9 idols, but I’m interested to see how these 5 new girls in Liella will do! I enjoyed their music video, so here’s to hoping this new series will be just as enjoyable!

Synopsis: Rumors revolving around The Book of Vanitas, a clockwork grimoire of dubious reputation, draw Noé, a young vampire in search of a friend’s salvation, to Paris. What awaits him in the City of Flowers, however, is not long hours treading the pavement or rifling through dusty bookshops in search of the tome. Instead, his quarry comes to him…in the arms of a man claiming to be a vampire doctor! Thrust into a conflict that threatens the peace between humans and vampires, will Noé cast in his lot with the curious and slightly unbalanced Vanitas and his quest to save vampirekind?
~*~
Berry: I’m not entirely sure what to expect from this either but the art is cool and the guys are eye catching so I’ll check it out at least.
Shadow: Vampires are typically a big nope for me, but this anime looks to have a bit of style to it. The character designs are interesting enough to hold my interest, so I may give this one a look just for the heck of it. Not to mention Natsuki Hanae seems to be voice casted in this sooooo….. >_>
Quietcupcake: I know next to nothing about this series, but I remember seeing a lot of manga caps floating around on the internet. It’s been on my list to check out for so long, perhaps this is finally my chance to get into it. Based on the aesthetic, I know younger me would have been all over this!

Suddenly, the school begins to drift through another dimension, and 36 boys and girls are left there, awakening to their supernatural abilities. Amidst the whirlpool of questions that come to mind one after another, survival in a supernatural world begins.
~*~
Berry: This looks and sounds so trippy and I love the unique artstyle as well. I like how different it looks so I can’t wait to see what this will bring to the table.
Quietcupcake: This one looks really exciting! The PV really did a good job of selling this one to me because I was on the fence with just the synopsis. I’ll be keeping my eye on this one and seeing how it plays out!
Nikolita: cracks knuckles Ahhhh another interesting supernatural title. The animation style is really unique too – reminds me a little of Flowers of Evil. What kind of powers do the students develop? Do they turn against each other? I’m totally down for watching this!

Synopsis: The anime’s story centers on Minato, a boy who stopped playing water polo due to a certain incident in the winter of his third middle school year. He picks the sport back up again with a new team when he starts in high school, but the fledgling team runs into many problems.
~*~
Berry: Cool, water polo! I don’t really know anything about water polo but it’s cool that it’s getting an anime and I think that’s pretty damn neat. Hoping this will be a fun one.
Shadow: Hmmmm… I am extremely picky about sports anime and the character designs in this show looks extremely generic especially for MAPPA. Typically MAPPA has more interesting designs for their characters so I’m a little surprised by how generic and bland they look. However, because it’s MAPPA, I’m sure the animation will be at least a solid 8/10 at the very least. If I hear the story is good, I may give it a chance.
Quietcupcake: Another season, another sports anime and here I am ready to watch it. Based on the synopsis, it doesn’t look like we’re really getting anything new in the genre (but hey! there’s only so many ways you can do sports), but I’m still a sucker for watching teams grow and learn together. Also, they showed a tortoise in the PV so I’ll have to check it out just for him.

~*~
Nikolita: I like the symbology of a red thread, being connected to fate, but I don’t know if I’d be interested enough in this title overall to cover it. The graphics look great though, and the enemy design (walking bouquets?? xD ) is unique, so Scarlet Nexus gets points from me for that.

~*~
Shadow: This seemed mildly interesting, but just solely going off the trailer, I have no idea what to expect. Though I do admit that the game-like visuals made me curious about what this is going to be. The premise sounds interesting, but I guess I’ll have to just wait and see how the execution and writing is.
Nikolita: I wish the trailer gave a little more information about the show because without understanding Japanese better, I feel like much about this title is going over my head. I do like that on the website you can see each character’s costume transformation at the click of a mouse.

Shadow: The art style of this series is very intriguing, but also a little weird. Judging from just the cover image, I thought it looked to be an ecchi series in disguise, but since it’s not listed as a genre, it could prove to be more interesting than I initially thought. And because MAPPA is handling the animation, it’s sure to have some great animation. Though I may just wait for the populous consensus on it before taking a look.: …
Nikolita: Feels a little cliche, and I’m not super on board with the animation style. Looks great, just not my thing I think. If someone decides to pick this up, please let me know how it is! ^_^b

Berry: So this one…I’m really not sure? On one hand it sounds like it might be pretty exciting but some of the designs are kind of silly and I’m not really understanding the world they live in. ~*~
Berry: Basically everything I said about Peach Boy Riverside applies here too. Sounds really exciting but it gives me that feeling that it can also go badly quickly. Also again the designs we have the most boring generic male and a bunch of girls that each ticked off a waifu trope. Berry: I don’t think this is something I would watch weekly, but this looks so damn funny. Working customer service/hospitality right now, I can kind of understand the characters lol
Nikolita: As a retail worker, I feel like this hits a little too close to home… =.=
Overall Thoughts
Berry: I’m back from my hiatus but I’ve also got a new job that keeps me busy so I don’t think I’ll be picking up too many titles this summer. The ones I’ve got my eyes on are The Duke of Death and his Maid and Remake Our Life. Of course I’m absolutely psyched for Idolish7 Third Beat, as well as Opera Girl!!!, Sonny Boy, Fena: Pirate Princess, The Case Study of Vanitas, and Aquatope of White Sand. Gonna take it easy on the anime this time and just focus on the ones I’m most excited for rather than trying everything, but I’ll still keep my eyes peeled for whatever surprise arises.
Shadow: I feel like there is a lot of potential this season, but whether the series themselves will actually live up to that potential is debatable. Though granted, literally all of my attention is being taken by Idolish7 being the big fan of the series as I am. And because Digimon is still an ongoing trudge and I am determined to see it all the way to the end, I’ll most likely be only picking up Idolish7 this season. I will be keeping my eye out for a few other series such as Aquatope of White Sand, Hamefura S2, The Case Study of Vanitas and D_Cide Traumerei.
Quietcupcake: There’s a nice mix this season and I’m looking forward to enjoying some new series. I don’t know if I have the opportunity to pick up too many new anime this season as I will be continuing my coverage of Tokyo Revengers and To Your Eternity from spring. I’m on the fence about covering I’m Standing on a Million Lives S2 considering I found the first season to be pretty average. I might provide a first impressions, but I think I’d like to pick up a fresh new show instead. Opera Girl!! and Aquatope of White Sand are definitely the biggest contenders for that spot (I’m leaning towards to former, but we’ll see how the pilot episodes go). But in addition to those, I’m also really looking forward to Idolish7 Third Beat! and Hamefura S2. I’ll also be checking out Re-Main and Case Study of Vanitas on my own! And as always, if there’s something that’s taken everyone by storm I’ll check it out as well.
Nikolita: Not a bad batch of shows overall! I’m really gunning for only a couple of shows (Fena: Pirate Princess, Sonny Boy), but there are a few others I’d consider based on what the others on the team are interested in (Aquatope of White Sand, Drugstore in Another World: The Slow Life of a Cheat Pharmacist, Scarlet Nexus, I’m Tsushima the Cat). There’s a good mix of supernatural, action, fantasy and slice of life shows this season. It’s too bad I’m not incredibly interested in isekai titles (both anime and manga) because that seems to be the latest trend and aside from a couple of standout examples like Drugstore in Another World, I can’t seem to get interested in that genre.
