AHHH SOMALI IS SO CUTE

My goodness what a lovely episode. This show just gives me warmth and fuzzies, and it just makes me happy. It’s calm, it’s sweet, it’s wholesome, I love it. Of course, they had to drop some sad bombs on us but I expected it. I just didn’t expect to learn this info so soon, but I appreciate it nonetheless.

This episode we got to meet two members of the Oni clan, Shizuno and Yabashira. As Golem and Somali enjoy their breakfast and play around with horned rabbits, Somali trips and skins her knee when chasing after one of them. It starts to bleed and hurt her, and unfortunately for them they ran out of medicine that would help with her little wound. But luck is on their side when a passing dwarf oni stumbles upon them, though not really because he was watching them. He offers to help them and uses his own medicine on Somali’s knee, and to make help it more he takes them to his house in the forest.

Dwarf onis like Shizuno aren’t as strong as regular oni, but they’re known for making their own medicines. He lives in the forest with his assistant Yabashira, a regular oni. Not going to lie, I wasn’t sure whether I should have trusted them or not. After the creepy cat from the first episode, I’m a little on edge whenever Somali is near anyone else. But my suspicions and fears went away when I saw how silly but hospitable both onis were. They really are just kind people and immediately tended to Somali’s wound, and even offered sweets.

Golem asks Shizuno to teach him how to make his own medicine, as it would prove to be a very useful skill whenever he would run out during their travels. Shizuno agrees, but he also slips that he would do it in return of a piece of Golem. Yabashira tells him to cut it out since that comment scared Somali and he apologizes and said it was a joke, but Golem breaks a part of his arm and offers it to Shizuno. It was pretty awkward but Golem didn’t seem bothered by it at all.

While Shizuno teaches Golem, Somali very cutely helps Yabashira out with his chores. She watches as her dad does everything for her, and she wants to learn how to help out with things too. Awwww. This show! Is! So! Cute! Somali is cute. Just…ahhhh.

Medicine making goes well and Shizuno asks Golem why he even wants to make medicine. Golem answers because of Somali getting injured, it messed with his thinking. The face that she made when she was hurt also seemed to hurt and affect him too and interestingly, he motions towards where his heart would be…if he had one of course. And Shizuno points that out, that it was heartbreak he was feeling. Of course Golem dismisses it, and he continues to dismiss his own feelings. Once Somali goes to bed that night, he shares a quick conversation with Shizuno and Yabashira. They ask what exactly a golem and minotaur are doing together, and he explains that he wants to find her parents and return her to them. They note that he seems to be in a hurry, and he removes his clothing to show how dilapidated his body has become. My theory from the first episode was that Golem’s body possibly was getting worse because his lifespan was connected to his forest, and the farther and longer he was away from his forest would slowly drain his life away. But instead, golems have a lifespan of 1000 years and Golem currently is 998 and some years old. Once golems reach exactly their 1000th year, they die. Golem has roughly a year and a half left to live and he wants to return Somali to her parents before his time comes. Sadly, Somali has no idea about this.

Now, I have no idea how long their journey is going to take them, and we don’t even know right now how many humans are left. Seeing as how most of the humans are long dead, and the condition Somali was in when Golem found her, I can pretty much guess that her parents are already dead. Golem seems like a smart being, I’m sure that thought must have already crossed his mind. Also, I see nothing but heartbreak from here on out but I had an inkling this show would be like that anyway. He wants to let her go, but she won’t want to. He’s about to die, and it’ll break her heart. I might as well get prepared for all these feels later on. T_T

This was a great episode. Shizuno and Yabashira were interesting characters, so I’d love it if they could show up again. Again, this was a very calming and sweet episode and I’m loving this show so far. I can’t wait to see what other things and creatures they’ll meet on their journey, on top of seeing Golem and Somali bond, and finding out whatever hints about the humans left in their world. That is, if there even are any of them left.
