Eva’s First Impression: Hachigatsu no Cinderella Nine is one of the shows I decided to give a shot, and turned out to be unexpectedly endearing to watch!
Baseball series in general have always been a hit or miss for me, mostly a miss because I typically can’t get into them. However this time it was different. I found myself charmed by the characters, including some that only had a split second of air time (such as the “Going-Home Club” girl), and their experience playing the game. I thought it was the cutest thing to watch Yuuki and Akane try the sport out, and interact with the kids when Tsubasa and Tomoe offered to join their friendly match to help them have enough players to play.
It starts off with Tsubasa is a first year student, she and her childhood friend Tomoe came up with the genius idea to hijack the school’s club presentations to promote recruitment for the girls’ baseball club since the school didn’t have one to begin with. I quickly fell in love with Tsubasa’s daring character because what better time to promote a new club than during the presentation? Of course they still have to fill out the association regulations, but Tsubasa already had the whole plan in her head.
However to my surprise, they didn’t actually tell us much about Tsubasa at all. The only thing we do know is that she is an experienced baseball player (and thanks to the ED Theme, we now know she used to play on a boy’s team), a regular visitor at a baseball shop to have been given some spare supplies to bring for the club’s trial meeting.
Instead of Tsubasa, the premiere focused more on Yuuki and Akane, two newbies who have no prior experience with baseball. Akane is a small, shy girl, who has always wanted to try baseball, but fears she wouldn’t be cut out for it. On the flip side of things, we have Yuuki, a tall girl who has athletic experience in both dodgeball and basketball, but she is afraid of joining a team because of the fear of letting them down. It’s a sad thing for Yuuki, especially since she has showed us how sweet and kind of a girl she is, as she helped Akane by accompanying her and encouraging her to give it a shot. If there’s one thing I am looking forward to, it is Yuuki coming to realize just what she is actually capable of, as she is a character with a lot of potential (in particular with her strong throws). There is no doubt in my mind that Tsubasa sees her as a diamond in the rough.
After watching the premiere, there is certainly a possibility this show could turn out to be one of the hidden gems of the Spring 2019 Season. But what I wonder the most is how the general pace will be. I have no idea how many episodes this is supposed to have, and I am already having a difficult time picturing how the team will form and compete together in just twelve or thirteen episodes, especially since they have only just founded the club today! Regardless however it plays out, it’s a show I am looking forward to watch this season, as I am already rooting for the girls! So if you haven’t checked this show out yet, I recommend give it a shot, it may pleasantly surprise you!
As for blogging, this may be one of those shows I am better of just watching. It really depends if there’s enough for me to talk about, or whether or not I end up picking up Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin. Since I am already covering Star Twinkle Precure, if neither Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin or this show is picked up by anyone else, then this would be the third one to cover on Sunday, which is something I would like to avoid doing after having done that on Wednesdays last season. Anyhow, for the time being I would like keep my options open and see how things play out within the next two weeks, or if anyone else is interested in picking this up!
