And the award for the Show Which Is Not At All Like I Thought It’d Be goes to… One Room! (Yes, this was even more of a surprise than Seiren.)
Not only was the style of the show not something I was expecting, but it’s also I think the first show, including shorts, where virtually nothing at all happened.
The tagline for One Room read, “The series will tell ‘three stories raised in your (one) room'”, but I didn’t think it meant that it would be produced with a first-person perspective. That’s right, One Room is done in such a manner that the viewer is the protagonist, and the cast of characters talk to the viewer like they’re the main character. o_O This is definitely a first for me; I’ve never watched a shown done in a first-person POV before.
I would probably feel more comfortable with this production choice if I were closer to what I imagine is the target demographic. But given that I’m one of the older members of AAB, and I’m not attracted to females, having the show’s female characters blush and be all cutesy to “me” is… kinda creepy, honestly.
So what happened in the first episode? You’ve moved into your new apartment and your young, female neighbour introduces herself. She’s in post-secondary like you but she honestly doesn’t look older than her mid-teens. *shuder* She explains she’s moved in with her sister, who’s out at the moment, and she presents you with a gift. Later after you’re returning home from university, you bump into her and walk home with her. She explains that her grades aren’t that good and she asks you to help her study. …That’s it. Mentally add in a few breast and panty-camera shots, and lots of shy blushing, and maybe you can get why I have no interest in this show.
Which sucks, because it looked like a cute show and I was curious about what it’d be like given what the tagline was. It’s just unfortunate that it’s not at all what I thought it’d be like, and what it actually is skeeves me right out.
