This is probably my favorite episode of Bananya so far mainly because it just captures pretty much everything cute about the show while giving me new things to talk about. Last episode was so cute but just existed as cute so it was much harder to explain or give thoughts on, but this time Bananya ends up going to the supermarket in Mom’s purse and as you can imagine, everything hilarious happens. Namely he gets to explore the entire supermarket and have fun with everything you can think of, which includes meeting other Bananya’s from all over the world.
This is what’s funny because it highlights a few things that are true for children and for all parts of the world: a huge part of exports and imports are actually food. You go to the grocery store and get a lot of food and some of it ends up being from pretty much anywhere. In Florida I often find oranges from Mexico even though we flat out are the orange producing state: that is the level of which food and importing occur.
What makes this hilarious though are the stereotypes they use to represent other countries. They have a bananya with dark skin, a mustache, and a turban who gives out really spicy curry. Then they have a beautiful blonde bananya with an umbrella and ringlets (oh, and sparkling blue eyes) who is outright named Elizabeth. Well, I mean, I did always accuse anime of stereotyping every pretty blonde European girl as the same and this is kind of a reinforcement. You could’ve at least named her Victoria, children’s cat cartoon show!
Bananya and I also have the same priorities as he almost misses going back in Mom’s purse to look at all the sweets. I understand you Bananya. He ends up safely home and the episode introduces the two Bananyas. . . okay, it is a bit creepy that this bananya can pull curry from inside of his banana peel. On top of it, Elizabeth is an even greater stereotype as she comes from a prestigious family. Despite how ridiculous it is, I kind of love it.
Then again, that is this show in a nutshell for me!
