In this episode we meet Mahiro Okuni, the Chief Medical Officer for the South Kanto Administration, when she meets with Airi and Gutoku. She has a list of students that will be transferred “inside”, which as far as I can tell means they’ll be leaving the Tri-City area and being moved to elsewhere within Japan. This seems to be something for students whose World powers have stopped improving, or who have some other reason for not being able to fight anymore. Airi is not a fan of Mahiro and I’m suspicious of her as well.
There’s a patrol scheduled for the Tokyo students, which Ichiya or Canaria is supposed to also participate in, but Canaria is busy and Ichiya sneaks off to visit an “inept transfer” student who is in the hospital and preparing to be transferred to the inside to be with his parents. Despite his rude comments, Ichiya brings the student a present to give to his parents, under the guise of keeping up formal roles, and we’re left wondering whether Ichiya really believes what he says or if somewhere underneath all his pricklyness he really does care a little.
This visit comes back to bite him later though because while Ichiya skips out on the patrol, Kosuke and the rest of the Tokyo patrol team encounters some Unknown at Umihotaru. They’re relatively small and Kosuke thinks that they’ll be able to defeat them easily, so they start to head into battle but have to pull back when a new, massive type of Unknown rises up from beneath the water. It has very high defenses and Kosuke’s team is unable to damage the Leviathan-class Unknown. As a result the Aqua Line and the Umihotaru train station are under the enemy’s control.
Later at a representative meeting, Kasumi and Maihime are quick to point the finger at Ichiya for being absent from the patrol, and Canaria tries unsuccessfully to defend his honor. Kasumi points out that when Ichiya is blamed for something as Tokyo’s head, he often redirects the blame to the students under him, which is obviously behaviour unbefitting of a leader. Gutoku says that at dawn the next day all three schools will attack the Unknown together.
Later that evening, Ichiya downloads some data on the new Unknown and leaves to go fight the Unknown alone. Meanwhile Canaria is discussing the new Unknown with Kosuke and the other students from the patrol at the hospital where the transfer student, Uzurano-kun, is being treated. When Canaria heads to Ichiya’s dorm room to see him, she instead finds his learning guide on his desk and adds a note to one of its pages. She looks out the window in time to see his purple glow in the distance and realizes he’s gone to fight the Unknown by himself.
At Umihotaru, Ichiya uses his powers to call the Unknown’s attention to him. By the time Canaria, Kosuke and the other patrol members arrive, Ichiya’s already engaged the enemy. Gutoku is notified of this unplanned fight and he’s pissed. He tells mission control to contact the Kanagawa representatives and ask them to help Ichiya.
After Canaria and the other Tokyo students arrive, the Leviathan-class Unknown re-emerge from beneath the waves. However this time it’s quick to attack Ichiya, and it’s apparent that this new Unknown in combination with the usual smaller ones will be too much for him. So Kosuke and the patrol students focus on wiping out the smaller Unknown while Ichiya will concentrate on the larger Unknown. Canaria uses her song to increase Ichiya’s strength while he’s stuck in the middle of the Leviathan-class’ attack, and she pushes herself really hard.
Suddenly there’s blood everywhere and Canaria is down. Ichiya takes the hit and is initially angered until he sees that something’s desperately wrong with Canaria. He panics and commands the others to take Canaria and retreat to Umihotaru while he fights the Unknown. However at that moment the large Unknown rises higher in the water, and holy fuck, what was initially thought to be just a larger Unknown was really only the tip of the iceberg. It is actually much, much larger. To give you an idea of the scale, put a popcorn kernel next to a grape, and then put a basketball next to the grape. The kernel is the small Unknowns, the grape is what was originally thought to be the new Unknown class, and the basketball is the actual size of the Leviathan-Unknown once it reveals itself. Holy. Shit.
After the credits, we see that Ichiya and the others have managed to evade the Unknown’s attack and have gotten Canaria to a hospital. There’s still blood everywhere but Canaria has no physical wounds; whatever brought her down is coming from inside her.
My thoughts: Damn what a cliffhanger!
I really like the battle music in Qualidea Code. Because Canaria’s World is to use the power of song to boost her teammates’ stats in battle, we get to hear pretty Jpop music while the action’s going on and this gets a big thumbs up from me. I just have to track down what Canaria’s battle song is called. ^_^v
I’m really curious about what’s going on with Canaria, because whatever’s wrong with her has not been alluded to as clearly as with characters in other shows like Your Lie in April. (Or if it was, I definitely missed it.) I wonder what her diagnosis will be…
