After last week’s exciting episode, I was hoping for something similar this week to keep the action flowing, but alas this was mostly a recap episode.
This episode was essentially just Shun and Emilio reflecting on the death of Delzaine. For Shun the situation also complicates his planned return home, because if Babel is no longer working the way that it should, then he’s still stranded in Endora.
Pascal and his assistant want to go back to their lab to study Babel’s results, but Mr. Smartypants didn’t load enough fuel into their airship (so they’d be lighter, in order to get to Babel faster) so now the two will have to travel back from Babylon along with Shun and the Ignauts.
Speaking of the Ignauts, their plans have now become slightly complicated. With King Delzaine dead there’s no longer any need for a revolution. So much of their efforts up to this point have been wasted. As the Ignauts leave to find food, Demetrio references that they now have more problems to deal with, not the least being who will replace King Delzaine. I have my guess, but time will tell. Also, is it me or is there a thing starting to blossom between Demetrio and Louise? Or is it just me?? o.o
Outside Babylon Shun and Emilio share a snack together. They lament that they both unintentionally broke their promises to each other: Shun’s being that he’d keep Emilio from killing Delzaine, and Emilio’s that he’d help Shun get home.
Emilio also finally, FINALLY displays some character development and reflects that until Delzaine’s death, he literally lived for revenge. We see a flashback to Emilio’s childhood when he accidentally overheard two maids gossiping about how Emilio idolized Delzaine even though he killed Emilio’s father, and then a timeskip forward to Emilio as an adolescent and silently swearing revenge on Delzaine. Then the flashback changes to a recap and we see Emilio’s failed attempt to kill Delzaine while he was sleeping.
Back in the present, Emilio is unable to figure out why although his father died, it feels like he didn’t get his long sought-after revenge. Emilio is starting to think that maybe he was wrong about Delzaine. Emilio shares with Shun that he tried to visualize what his birth father looked like, but he couldn’t remember. Instead, the look that Delzaine gave him as he was dying looked very familiar for some still unknown reason. Emilio reveals some of the conversation he had with Pascal earlier in the season, and hints that maybe Pascal was right. Maybe Delzaine wasn’t the man who killed Emilio’s birth father after all. All of that time, focus and energy spent on killing a man who might not have even been the culprit at all. How sad for Emilio.
Elsewhere in Babylon, Alicia and Falarion are wandering the labyrinth looking for the guys, who are continuing to talk atop Babylon’s outside structure. Emilio is slowly coming to the conclusion that Shun had been right all along, and his wallowing in self-pity prompts Shun to try to snap him out of his mood. They eventually walk back inside Babylon for a change in scenery, and Shun acknowledges the time when Emilio saved his life during their first fight with Ibelda.
They eventually find a spot to sit atop the labyrinth where they can see Babel’s spire, and Emilio asks Shun some questions about the surface. Shun admits that there are wars and revolts on the surface, but they’re not something he’s ever had to deal with like Emilio, the Ignauts and other citizens of Endora have had to confront. Shun confirms that he’s still looking for a way to get back to the surface, even if Babel is no longer his route home. Just then Alicia and Falarion find them and calls for them to return to the rest of the group. As the boys climb down the labyrinth wall on ropes, Shun races Emilio to the group.
My thoughts: Hey, new ending song!
I’m really loving this new budding friendship between Shun and Emilio! It’s long overdue and now that we’re past the halfway point, all I can say is that it’s about damn time.
Did the animation in this episode look a little better than usual to anyone else? I feel like Emilio didn’t look quite as derpy as he sometimes does, and overall the shading was much better.
Now it feels like Endride is starting to pull itself together and flow a little more smoothly. I’m curious what will happen in the fallout after Delzaine’s death, and Emilio’s past regarding Delzaine is still the most intriguing part of this show for me. See you next week!
