I think this case has been the first in the anime I feel sort of let down by. What started as carrying the weight of Von Karma now feels more like it suffers from his animation and honestly? It really impacted the atmosphere. The DL6 case impacted Edgeworth very explicitly and made him who he is today: but despite the effect that it’s having on the characters I don’t feel as engaged as I really should be. Why are there only a few scenes where the animation becomes genuinely better? Why doesn’t the importance of Edgeworth’s father dying really hit me like it should? I feel like the atmosphere of Von Karma really stutters in this episode and the ones prior to it, which is a bummer considering how excited I was for it.
It’s hard to talk about this episode without ruining the entire case, but essentially the true villain is revealed and they work hard to prove it. Mia doesn’t reappear but her voice is there to encourage Phoenix and this gives him the kick in the pants he needs to be the most confident we’ve seen him thus far. It was really fun to see him go back and forth dramatically with Von Karma and hold his own. That being said, Von Karma was way scarier when he initially appeared and when he was in the games. It might have something to do with the animation budget but despite some humorous moments I was really brought down by how anti climactic and low quality this entire arc has been adapted.
This episode could have ended the season but it’s not quite over (I believe the run is 24) I will be covering it in its whole and I hope the story continues in the direction of the first episodes. The unfortunate part is that Maya is now AFK from the show because she disappears until the next games content, Justice for All. What happens for now is up in the air and I don’t know if the show will jump right into the next case or not. it seems like the show is going to give us. . .fillers? This provides a potential awesome thing and a potential groaning moment because more of the trio as kids! And. . .totally not original canon content! But it’s about a dog and that seems. . . fishy.
I’m disappointed in the show right now, but I hope it picks back up and presents the games twists and turns better in the upcoming episodes.
