I am seriously wondering if the animation quality of Sailor Moon Crystal is just on a permanent incline – this episode had some of the best scenes yet, with fabulous shading and dynamic motions that just caught my eye from the beginning. If the finale of this season is animated as well as this episode and executed as dramatically and thoughtfully as this one, it will be a better season finale than the original anime: and this coming from a person whose favorite arc of the original anime is easily this one. Depending on how they execute my beloved favorite villain, this season might win. Holy crap, I can’t even believe I am saying this. This season of Crystal is just so good it’s hard for me to sit down and say what’s wrong with it. What IS wrong with it? As an anime critic my complaints are simple and few: I don’t like the new singer of the opening, the new ending is jarring with the drama, I wish the villains had longer arcs, and why isn’t there more Michiru gosh dangit?!
This episode we get closer to the villains who seem to have a strong connection to Hotaru. While Hotaru’s clearly got some bizzwhizz going on (nice job breaking it opening) her daddy’s special friend is an evil magus and they both serve the next antagonist, ANOTHER set of overbearing eyes with booming voices in the background. Wow, well this show definitely hasn’t had anything like that! Don’t start creepy smiles or give us anymore sexy female villains, that would be way too original for this show! (I love it though. . ) The villain of this episode is slightly more significant, Tellu, who is incredibly high level, and does plant things. At the same time ChibiUsa and Usagi go to visit Hotaru to give her ChibiUsa’s gift, and ChibiUsa proves she is actually a loving girl and literally says she can’t just give Mamoru the gift because they both worked hard and it wouldn’t be fair to Usagi. I . . I hated ChibiUsa for years, now she’s one of my more favorites. She’s so cute and precious, and loves her family. She also loves Hotaru, who doesn’t want to accept the gift, and kind of goes psycho seizure on the Crystal ChibiUsa has.
My heart breaks for Usagi over and over when it comes to Haruka and Michiru. The original anime portrayed an entirely different story: Senshi who thought they were better than Usagi and wanted nothing to do with her because she wasn’t willing to do what it took. Now Haruka and Michiru actually seem to want to be with Usagi, almost yearning for it, but the truth of their existence won’t allow them to. To see Haruka actually express pain is gut wrenching. I also wanted to punch Tellu for her plants and how they affected Mako in general. Deep in her heart we still see Makoto has some issues with the person she loved first, but now we see plants affecting her to take her hostes. (Because apparently all Sailor Moon Crystal villains want is delicious twinkies)
The fighting we see in episode is absolutely amazing because 1. it allows us to see the condensed transformations (which are always fun) 2. Tellu is the first fucking villain this arc to withstand all the attacks of the Inner Senshi. Plus, Tellu’s plants cause something even better. . . it’s not Haruka and Michiru who save the Senshi, but the reborn cries of DEAD SCREAM BECAUSE PLUTO IS FUCKING REBORN AND EVERYTHING IS GOOD AND FUCK FUCK FUCK I LITERALLY CAAAAAAAAANT!!! SHES JUST SO PERFECT! ITS ALL PERFECT! THERE UNIVERSE, ALL IS RIGHT WITH EV ERYTHING, ALL IS GOOD, NO SADNESS EXISTS, THERE IS ONLY PEACE. I CAN LIVE IN THE PRESENT KNOWING IT IS FILLED WITH THESE FEELINGS OF GOODNESS. EXCUSE ME COHERENT THOUGHT IS GONE I AM – anyway the episode was good you should all watch it. As usual Sailor Moon Crystal’s Season III is more than worth it for fans new and old!
Oki
This season is so good, I almost wish they could redo the first two seasons with this team.
Yeah, then we’d basically have everything we ever dreamed of..sobs
