Every now and then I get frustrated with anime for doing things I hate, but Dimension W proves weekly to have the opposite situation occur weekly. We learned last week about many of the issues that faced Kyoma’s group and then we saw the true villain kind of rear his head, and while I only briefly mentioned him for the benefit of non spoilers holy crap Seameyer both terrifies and strangely scare-rouses me. How does one look at that and not want to punch him into oblivion? Kyoma is on the same page as me. We don’t see him again this episode but Kyoma states that the fact he was in the state he was means Seameyer is still alive, which means that will be fun. This episode’s villain is primarily K.K. and his new ‘pet’- a zombified Yuri who does his bidding.
We get a lot of fighting this episode but we’re also continuing alongside the line of what the show has been gleefully setting up for me: the allusion of Mira = Miyabi continues to get cemented. I think as Kyoma realizes more and more how genuinely Mira makes him think of Miyabi he resents her and finds it hard to keep her close, but saves her tirelessly and pulls her in anyway. Accept your new robot-ified waifu who is the same person Kyoma, accept it. I feel bad just focusing on the romance because the show genuinely is more than this romance and we spent many episodes before Miyabi was introduced being told about Kyoma. I think what makes it so alluring is that Kyoma before his backstory was simply an angsty ninja who hates things: with his romance he became incredibly dimensional.
And dammit, I love that. I love when my anime takes a character and makes them better from romance. Look, I’m going to be the first person to tell you the most interesting thing about my life has been my romances. I was in a very long one and it still shapes the way I talk and act, the movies I see, the things I do. It does not strike me now that I’m single and independent as cliche or tawdry because our interactions with people ARE what make us who we are. Some people are wholly capable of being filled with content outside of their love lives, and many are, but a huge part of what makes us human is the way that love influences us to make decisions that we make.
So Kyoma’s life was altered forever by the love he held for someone. Here he is, going on without them and moving forward to exist, and now he might be rewarded with having his love returned to him and finding a form of solace and happiness? I don’t know about you but I’m freaking tired of being sad all the time and this story isn’t copping me out, Kyoma never tried to play God he just tried to do real work to provide an opportunity for his fiance to keep living. He has an eager and open heart and this branched into meaningful friendships and rivalries. Through his romance with Miyabi he got to grow and become more, and I’m totally not sorry for yearning for them to be together again.
That being said, K.K. was certainly a big part of the episode as well as Loo/Lwai. Loo was gunned down previously but makes it to Kyoma and tries to do his part against K.K. who has the upper hand against the party since Yuri can’t feel pain, and surprise, Doug’s body survived the Void and K.K. is able to zombify him too. Doug, one of Kyoma’s former team mates, is unable to be saved but Kyoma insists anyway. While I spent most of the episode being really invested in Loo and hoping he would be okay, I will fully admit to you the end of the episode made me feel a bit cheated. There is a happy ending kind of show and then just straight up asspull emotion grabs, but I digress. The show is hammering in super hard that Mira and Miyabi are equivalent and I’m sure we’ll be getting some fun revelations. . .
Probably from that creepo. God he makes me think of Leeron from Gurren Lagann. . . combined with Ribbons Almark. . .combined with. . .Kano from Mekaku City Actors. Just look at that face. In any case, Dimension W isn’t perfect but it is never a chore to watch it. And squee.
Oki
*Mira gets a head pat from kyoma*
Mira: p-please do that again…
Kyoma: No
Entire audience: boooooooooooo
Kyoma is in denial about miyabi so hard, it will rewarding to see if the robot whom he claims “shouldn’t be able to cry” (honestly kyoma, think about THAT for a second) can crack Kyoma hard exterior. Although his hard exterior is pretty bad ass
