So, we just had two episodes of wacky side adventures in this show about egg underpant gods. So you know what that means! That’s right. It’s time to introduce another one of the six Cocotamas. Who do we get this time? Well… I’ll tell you this much. it’s not the fat one.
Let’s once again jump into the subtitleless world of shameless toy sales and see if we can make any sense out of this.
So the episode starts up with Kokoro’s mom helping Kokoro sew a bag that she had been making. Apparently her mom works at a sewing shop and is super amazing at sewing.
Afterwards she realizes she has to get ready for work and goes to put on her special lipstick she got as a present from Kokoro’s father.
Kokoro leaves the room and goes back to hers to discover that there’s a Cocotama egg in her new bag. She opens it to find a new Cocotama named Kirarise. She is born from the love of the lipstick that her mother has for it.
The gang finds out that she’s basically the fashion/romance god of the group. They introduce themselves and she’s like “Pfff. bitch please i’m more important than all of you.”
Kokoro breaks up the fight though as she talks to her and gets her to butt stamp the contract and have her become part of the family. They start to show her around the Cocotama house and she decides that she really wants Merori’s room, but Oshaki’s all like “um bitch no”. That’s when we learn that Kirarise has the ability to make dudes fall in love with her.
Kokoro realizes that there’s not enough current room in the house and that the new Cocotama needs to add her decorative flair so they head over to her mom’s who works at a sewing store. ….Which looks like it’s run out of someone’s house.
Which is interesting because in Japan they have a lot more “Businesses run out of houses” than we do here in America. It’s one of those strange things you just have to get used to over there. Imagine a bed and breakfast…but it’s a Jo-Ann fabrics. It’s kind of like that.
Upon arriving there, her boss is like “Hey, these three ladies who pay me to help them sew are coming but I have to go because something came up. Can you teach them? K thanks!
Unfortunately these women suck dick at sewing. And because they do, they blame Kokoro’s mom saying that she’s a bad teacher and they want to cancel their classes. Kokoro jumps into the rescue and tells them that she thinks they’re really good. This appeases them for a few minutes, but they quickly revert after getting more pissed off.
Kirarise tries to use her magic but the women’s hearts are too closed off. Merori then uses her magic of music which opens their heart enough for the magic to work and they imagine themselves the way they were in their younger days.
Their hearts open they realized how happy they were here and decided they want to keep coming back. And the episode ends with Kirarise thanking Merori and becoming friends with the rest (well…as best she can).
This episode was actually pretty cute. I will say this about this show. They do give the focus to characters other than the main character and it’s nice. It’s interesting to see that one of the Cocotamas is actually a lot more focused on the mother than she is in Kokoro. I’m assuming that’s because she’s the most mature out of them and sees Kokoro’s mom as the pinnacle of maturity. She can be a bitch, but you can see the deep level of respect and admiration she has for Kokoro’s mom.
This is a nice show because even when there’s antagonists they’re really just people that need to have their hearts opened. Anyone negative in this show has redemption and that’s a nice lesson to teach.
With everything going on in the world it’s nice to be able to watch a show where problems are solved with love and words where people see the other side of the argument and do their best to understand and befriend them. It’s actually disappointing that these morals are delegated to children’s shows. In a way, aren’t problems solved by guns and violence in adults shows actually more childish than the ones done peacefully in children’s programming?
Either way, this episode was cute. It’s nice to have a snarky foil to the rest of the group but also a mature one. Kirarise is definitely the older sister of the Cocotama family but she really does have a good heart as they all do.
All in all, this was a cute episode and a nice introduction to this character. I hope she has more good scenes to come as she’s a nice addition.
Episode 7.5/10
