Episode 2 of Comet Lucifer holds nothing back as the mecha battle from the previous episode continues through the first third of this episode. Lots of action typical of a mecha-on-mecha battle, and while I admit to losing a little interest as it carried on for several minutes, I decided I am really liking the mysterious bipedal mecha that came from the loli girl’s body. The noises it makes during battle combined with its flexible tail reminds me of a Komodo dragon.

It is not long into the episode before we get confirmation that yes, the loli girl is the Lima target that Captain Gus Stewart and the other uniformed men are looking for – either that or she is emitting the same type of signal. Also, the bipedal mecha seems to exist to protect the loli girl, not attack her as it may have initially seemed at the beginning of the episode.

One freefall through bedrock and a cute moment between Kaon & Sogo later, their friends show up with their spiffy red racing vehicle and spirit everyone back to Do Mon’s, where the loli girl finally wakes up. She mimics Kaon and proceeds to act like a baby as she childishly investigates the little dining area where their group is seated. As someone who’s not too familiar with loli anime, I guess the girl’s behaviour is what is supposed to make her cute and appealing to viewers, but I’m realizing that I don’t think I’m part of the target audience. (Any dub/sub too high-pitched is a huge turnoff in anime for me.)  Not long after we get a fanservice shower scene and find out the loli girl’s name is Felia. Her green Caterpie-like protector pet is my favourite character so far. Which means that ok, so I guess I’m a sucker for some cute things.

Awww, Lil’ Caterpie has such a cute little moustache!

Captain Stewart gets a new piece of machinery to play with, and I’m intrigued to see why Fongerufu is so eager for him to use it. Could it have some hidden abilities? After the bloodbath in the jail interrogation scene, I’m thinking the captain might have some of his own.

The final moments of this episode reeled me away from my state of indifference and left me asking lots of questions. Who is this Pack kid, and where did his special abilities come from? What is his relation to Captain Stewart? What organization is Captain Stewart working for? What’s the deal with Master Zoneboyle? And the mysterious bipedal armour from the earlier mecha battle is…. Moura? o.o

While I am not as excited about this episode as the previous one, Comet Lucifer redeemed itself in the final few minutes and ended on a great cliffhanger. As a viewer I was definitely left wanting more.

The moe/childish act is emblematic of Japanese pop culture’s obsession with youthful innocence, leading to the popularity of the cute-voiced doe-eyed girls/pretty boys in their mainstream culture. This is even more prevalent in their late-night animes, which as you know cater to a specific demographic of viewer there.

For example, I still recall a late-night variety show featuring a gravure idol whose sweet, innocent face and speech completely contrasted her sexy, big-boobed body. You’d never have imagined someone like that in that type of industry if they never told you.

    >mfw felia does anything

I didn’t think the mecha battle would continue for so long, so that was a nice surprise. What was really interesting was that Stewart and Pack have clearly worked together before (probably in that war where Stewart distinguished himself) but at this point in the story, Pack is in jail and Stewart is a high-ranking official. Also I think even Stewart doesn’t know as much as we think he does – he didn’t know the Lima was Felia at all until he decided to properly check, meaning that he went in there without any idea of what he was supposed to be looking for.
