So we are back to Ushio and Tora the quest for mom. Or..at least I am. Because honestly I’m not sure anyone besides me and this tumbleweed are still watching this show. Right tumbleweed? (Tumbleweed leaves) NOOO!!

Anyway, I should probably get into the episode. Okay here we go. So once again our hero Ushio is heading towards to Hokkaido to see his mother. Now if you’re thinking he’ll find his mother this episode, then I have to laugh as you obviously haven’t been watching this show very much.

So he hops on a bus with Tora and they head there. Unfortunately a whole bunch of demons want him dead. Knowing they’re coming they decide to….stay on the bus. Not..sure…why but they do and then the demon comes through the bus and kills the driver making the bus crash.

NO!!! I only had 5 days until retirement!
NO!!! I only had 5 days until retirement!

Wow…didn’t see that one coming…at all.

The demons then relentlessly attack Ushio who runs into the woods to avoid injuring more innocent people. In the ensuing panic, Ushio and Tora end up being separated. Tora ends up talking to this big hulking demon dude where they start chatting and Ushio ends up in a pond talking to a kappa about what’s going on.

Apparently there was this super demon that came from China that killed a lot of demons a long time ago. The demons banded together to fight him but only succeeded in causing him to withdraw and go into hibernation mode. They eventually found him, however, they couldn’t attack him because of a barrier that was put up by a human woman.

Fucking mystical barriers. Every time.
Fucking mystical barriers. Every time.

It turns out that the human woman was the ancestor (i assume) of Ushio’s mother. So now it’s ushio’s mother’s job to keep the barrier up. (once again, i’m assuming) The demon talking to Tora tells him that he doesn’t have to fight, just not to interfere. Tora is struggling with this idea and kind of just stands back and looks out in the forest.

Meanwhile back with the weasel characters they see the other demons telling them to join them kill ushio to which they respond by killing the other demons telling them that they won’t let them hurt Ushio.

Get yo weak ass shit outta here

The kappa also told ushio that if he goes to the village the demons probably won’t follow him there. As he’s running there he sees an old man in the forest being attacked by demons so he saves him and runs towards the village.

From the start I knew this episode wasn’t really going to resolve anything, especially because it was called “Part 1”. You know right off the bat you’re screwed when you see that anyway. I am beginning to hope that since they’re talking about ushio’s mom so much now, maybe, just maybe they’ll reintroduce her soon. Yes I know we see a cameo of sick white haired girl so it doesn’t make these characters ENTIRELY pointless, I’m still waiting for the mother to show up and explain things.

hooray! i get to have a cameo!
hooray! i get to have a cameo!

This show has become a strange ritual for me every week. It seems like recently i’ve been saying a lot of “and then they fight the random monster of the week”. I mean it feels like i’m watching power rangers at times. I know this show’s going to have 36 episodes so they have to stretch this out a bit, but i’m happy they’re actually STARTING to get the meat of this show. Hopefully part 2 will begin to answer some questions and we’ll get a step closer to the whole mother thing.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t DISLIKE the show, but it’s one of those shows like Gate where I wish I could just marathon it instead of waiting every week because there’s swaths of nothing happening.

As for the show itself I feel like this is the point in which Tora really is going to show his true colors. He has to make a choice and he really can’t turn back from the choice he makes next. Hopefully they’ll be actual friends soon and drop this whole “bah, i’m still going to kill you” thing. You know he’s not going to, but it’s getting annoying with him repetatively saying that. I’m getting a whole Vegeta/Goku vibe from it and just like that, it’s getting very annoying.

I'll defeat you one of these days Ushio-rot

All in all though, the episode was okay as it was at least a tad informative. Either way……
