Hi everyone!

I’m Nikolita, and I’m one of the new additions to the AngryAnimeBitches team. I’ve been blogging on and off for 10+ years, but this is the first time I’ve a) written regular entries and b) been a part of a team while doing it. I get really excited about anime and I love to talk about it, so my apologies in advance if I am a little exuberant.

My first introduction to anime was an unsubbed VHS recording of Tonari no Totoro almost twenty years ago. I didn’t watch much anime after that until a couple of years later in middle school, when I was exposed to shows like Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh and Escaflowne on YTV/Fox Kids. In the years since, I’ve seen so many shows that I almost can’t keep track of them all. I like to read manga and I have a collection, plus there are a handful of series which I read online. In addition to nerding out over manga and anime, I play video games (mainly RPGs like Final Fantasy, but I really like Sims and DDR too) and am obsessed with music. I have also been to Japan twice, and would happily live there if my knowledge of Japanese was better.

I have a few select genres that I really enjoy, but in the last couple of years I’ve been trying to branch out more and try shows that I might otherwise ignore because I feel I won’t like them. (I’m looking at you, Berserk & Basilisk.) My all-time favourite series is Vision of Escaflowne, followed very closely by Saiunkoku Monogatari.  When watching anime/reading manga, I feel that things like character growth, character relationships and music are as important to me as plot (which explains some of more “outlying” shows in my anime-watching history).

If you’re looking to watch something unique and outrageous (“anime on crack” as I’ve so fondly coined), I recommend the shows FLCL and Dead Leaves. Puella Magi Madoka Magica has some awesomely trippy animation as well. And if you’re looking for a new manga to read, I’m currently adoring Akatsuki no Yona, and I wholeheartedly recommend Mars, Brides, and Usagi Drop.

Anyways I’ll stop there before I start rambling. I’m really excited to be here writing for AAB, and I look forward to talking with everyone about the shows I review. Feel free to ask me what my favourite shows or manga are because I have quite a list, and I’m always happy to geek out over them with someone else. ^_~V

    Cool nickname and welcome:D
I second the feel on berserk, golden age manga arc is where it’s at. I like deconstruction too but ignored madoka for evangelion.
Right now I’m into dorohedoro, everything by tsutomu nihei (might’ ve spelled it wrong) and rokka no yuusha for betrayal fest.
    Let us nerd together;0

Thank you! 🙂 I’ve had it for many, many years.

I watched the original series, then the 3 OVAs. I haven’t read the Berserk manga yet. I really like the animation style, and just try to avoid the excess blood/gore (the final couple of episodes of the TV series were hard to watch >< ). I've watched the original Evangelion TV series once, and I've seen Death & Rebirth. I haven't seen any of the newer movies (1.1 etc), and don't think I will. Series was a little too whacked for me. I haven't watched or heard of Dorohedoro, and I've heard of Rokka no Yuusha but am not following the series. We shall definitely nerd together! 😀

Evangelion as a whole is definitely messy yeah.
The newer movies…are approximated because of the limited screentime and I wouldn’t really recommend them to anyone new to eva unless people are in for sentai mecha fights. :shrugs:
I really like the ending of End of Evangelion though.
A couple of words on Dorohedoro, I feel people are missing out, I won’t deny it’s gory and that Q Hayashida employs artsy techniques to get things like corpses and whole places dark and “muddy” but it’s also goofy romance as far as the main couple goes. If that’s a redeemer. Obviously plot is king and a lot of things happen in the old coincidental tradition, like “oooh thanks god you were passing by and opened the fridge my corpse was stashed into:D” just more complicated. Maybe it’s overly long but I had a lot of fun following a lot of cool characters. /rubbish end of post

Yeah I wasn’t planning on watching them anytime soon. But the original Death & Rebirth films were pretty good, from what I remember.

lol I’m not big on horror and gore. *shudder* But thanks for the recommendation anyways, I’ll pass it on to someone who I know likes those kinds of shows. 🙂
