Yep…still reviewing this show. Can I say WHY I am? Um…. well there’s three answers to this question. 1, It’s kind of out of obligation. Me and Berry have gotten 20 episodes done and I feel like we gotta make it to the end. Number 2, because I want to see if anything’s going to come out of these two other than “I love you” for 20+ episodes. And number 3, because like everyone else who watches the show, I’m also wondering, What about Sena? However, this episode might actually lend something to that final question. So with that, let’s jump into Ore Monogatari episode 20.
So the episode opens up with Takeo talking to his little sister about how he never got chocolates from a girl before on Valentine’s day but is really excited this time because he’s actually going to get some from Yamato.
We then have a bit of backstory about how Takeo felt bad every year that Suna got chocolates and he got none. Okay, i’m going to interrupt this review right here. This guy is like 16 years old. He’s like “Oh no! I’ve never had a girlfriend!” Dude. seriously. you’re 16. Shut up. I don’t feel for your plight of “Never being with someone”. He’s been whining about this since like episode 1. We get it. You’re a big guy who scares a lot of people. But you’re 16. It’s not like you’re 30. Chill yourself.
Anyway, back to the story. so Yamato’s friends are upset that they don’t have anybody to make chocolates for and when they find out that she and the other friend are making chocolates for their respective boyfriends they ask if they can join them in making it with them, to which they agree.
Meanwhile back at Takeo’s school the other guys get wind of the fact that this is going to happen and ask Takeo if they can come along. He asks Yamato and she agrees and of course, the guys are very happy.
The next chunk of minutes is Takeo (as well as interspersed earlier in the episode) being excited about the chocolate. And not like…regular excited. Like…entitled excited. Really there was just something about the way Takeo acted about these chocolates that really bothered me. You’ll see why in a minute.
So the girls decide that since the guys are coming, why not make the chocolate for the boys that are coming. Upon arriving and receiving the chocolates you can just see how happy and grateful they are for girls giving them chocolates even if they’re not because they’re a couple. It’s actually pretty adorable.
Meanwhile, for the rest of the time that everyone hangs out together Takeo is STILL thinking about getting chocolate from Yamato, to the point that it’s preoccupying his mind instead of truly enjoying the day, and, you know, being with her.
After they all leave for the day, Yamato leaves too and Takeo gets incredibly depressed thinking about how he didn’t get chocolate from her. He even says “Oh, I guess that’s how things will be”
I find two things wrong with this. 1. It shouldn’t fucking matter if she gives you chocolate or not. SHE MAKES YOU SHIT ALL THE TIME. Maybe you shouldn’t have been so obsessed with the goddamn idea of getting chocolate that you set your selfish set up for a fall.
SECONDLY, she DID give him chocolate.
Yes, I know he realizes this a few minutes after this, but you’re telling me that it takes THIS long for him to realize she DID give him something? Or it just wasn’t good enough to get homemade chocolate cookies? Fuck you Takeo.
And then of course it turns out that she DID make him a super special awesome chocolate thing, she just needed to get a bigger box.
I really have tried to like Takeo this series, but I really did not like him this episode. The entire time he was obsessed with getting something and when he didn’t get it, he was crushed. You shouldn’t fucking care about these chocolates so much. It’s not that big of a deal. Maybe you should have enjoyed being with this girl who obviously loves you and not be such a gimme gimme asshole. I really haven’t been this disgusted with Takeo before. He lost points with me in this episode.
However, as I said way back earlier in this review, one good thing does happen. Towards the end we see Suna getting a whole lot of chocolates, but we know that he doesn’t want to go out with any of these girls because they talk about Takeo behind his back. But then Takeo thinks that not all the girls are like that and at least one must be nice. And then, we see peeking around a corner, a nerdy girl.
As we’re getting towards the end of the series, I have a feeling…could this be the love interest we’ve been waiting for all this time for Suna? I certainly hope so.
And that’s where the episode ends.
As I said, I hated Takeo in this episode. Something about this single mindedness really pissed me off. I don’t know. It just rubbed me the wrong way.
Luckily for a lot of the time I could focus on Takeo’s friends as they were energetic and fun as always. Suna is always a joy to watch and Yamato is always adorable. But I am really starting to get sick of Yamato/Takeo. It’s to the point where their diabetes inducing sweetness has long outlived its charm. It’s too far in the series for them to break up or even have disagreements, and They’re not going to develop beyond “I love you even more!”
The main reason I am very interested for next week is for Suna. I want to see him get a girlfriend as right now, he’s the only reason I’m even remotely interested.
Overall, if it wasn’t for the friends or Suna, this episode would have gotten a MUCH worse score, but, as it is……..5/10
(if it wasn’t for them, it would have been a 3)
COME ON SUNA! YOU CAN DO IT BUDDY!
