If you couldn’t guess from either the title or previous reviews I have written about this show, I am getting pretty tired of this show. It’s a cute idea for a few episodes, MAYBE thirteen, but this episode really showed the flaw of this concept. the length is pure insanity. This is the kind of show that really begins to show its age. And honestly, this episode only drives this point home. What do I mean by that? Well let’s begin and i’ll explain.

So the episode begins with my favorite character having just gotten the girl. (Can’t say I expected to say that..well…ever.) He tells Takeo that he kissed her on Christmas and Takeo freaks out telling him that that’s crazy and he wants to wait until his third year of high school.

Meanwhile, as Takeo’s birthday is January 1st, his birthday is coming up and Yamato is excited to spend his birthday with him.

I swear Takeo does nothing BUT blush this entire series.

Yamato then heads to Suna’s house to ask him what kind of cake he should bake for his birthday. Suna tells her why not make the same kind of cake she made the first time she made him a cake. She thinks this is a great idea but also asks about kissing. Suna tells her that he plans to do it on their third year of high school and it nearly crushes Yamato until Suna tells her that she could always make the first move.

Good Grief

Takeo goes to sleep but gets a phone call waking him up at midnight. It’s Yamato wishing him a happy birthday.

Well enough of that scene as the next morning they go to the shrine together to spend Takeo’s birthday where they do the cute stuff like getting their fortunes and praying at the shrine.

Here is a picture of them at said shrine

They head back to Takeo’s to hang out but then his old buddies from elementary school show up to hang out with him. Afterwards Yamato gives him his birthday present of a stuffed teddy bear.

what is this madness?

She then gives him his cake and they turn off the light as she asks him to close his eyes and blow out the candle. She then uses this opportunity to kiss him. …unfortunately he doesn’t realize he was kissed. Whoops!

Dude. Considering his lips are like...two sausages I'm not surprised.

Takeo eats the cake and goes home and ends up talking to Suna. He mentions to Suna how when he was going to blow out the candles and felt a big bug on his lips. Suna corrects him and goes “Um…dude I think that was a kiss.” Realizing how much of a derp he is, he runs back to Yamato and asks if he can try to kiss her. She agrees and then kiss for realsies this time.

That’s….pretty much where the episode ends.

I’ll give them this. This was one of the better episodes I’ve seen recently with this show. Why is that? Because it’s not trying to do something it’s terrible at. What would that be? That would issues with their relationship. This series is good at one thing. Fluff. It does fluff well, and it KNOWS it does fluff well. When it tries to make problems with the couple, it’s only external forces or miscommunication. Whenever they try something that isn’t the two of them being lovey dovey lovebirds, it comes off sad or uncomfortable to watch. I mean come on, you’ve done it twice already.

that being said, I still like Suna’s sister.

Any sort of external force puts the writers for Takeo in a spot. Takeo would never willingly leave his girlfriend for someone new out of the blue, because he’s not a terrible person like that, but they feel they have to hint at that because it causes “conflict.” It doesn’t. It just feels forced and contrived because we know it will never ever go anywhere.

All that aside, this to me, made romance feel a bit dull. This premise does not hold up well for 24 episodes. This needed to be a short 6 episode OVA. That’s really all it needed. The problem is, this show isn’t BAD, it just doesn’t have enough content for how long of a stretch it was given and it is overstaying it’s welcome.

It’s like when someone gives you a buttercream cake. The first slice is delicious but by the third slice you feel like you need a nap and an insulin injection.

As I said, this episode wasn’t bad, but i’m just tired of it. It takes them EIGHTEEN episodes to KISS. It’s like “Daymn. Come on guys”. The only real conflict we can bring to the table at this point is one of them having feelings for someone else, but they don’t and like I said, it will never happen. The problem is, cute can only take you so far.

Seriously guys. There's only so much awkward cuteness i can take.

Better than the previous episodes, but..seriously. come on guys. Do something. ANYTHING!

Episode 6/10

(Hey, at least I wasn’t disgusted in this episode)

Suna needs to get a girl. Now that would be interesting.
