I know for sure now that this is Dragon Ball. Not that I had any doubt before, but ten minutes to get to King Kai’s planet took the span of the entire episode. Beerus should of been there at least by the middle of the episode. Oh well, at least he actually made it this episode. Besides, this wasn’t his episode anyway. As the title implies, this episode is about the Pilaf Gang.
Now, I don’t want to say that they’re putting some people out here but, what if someone who only watched Dragon Ball Z watched Super? Like, they didn’t watch Dragon Ball. They would be SO confused right now about who these people are! I mean, I’m aware they show up in Battle of the Gods, which I also think is confusing for someone who is only a fan of Z.
Well, hopefully Super will give us some time to establish these characters to new viewers or inspire them to turn back and watch Dragon Ball. For now, all we know is that they’re trapped on a deserted island, digging for treasure, with no food and they have a Dragon radar. Which, activates when Trunks shuts down the fancy security system that Bulma has on the first place prize for her birthday bingo tournament.
A set of all seven dragon balls.
So wait, we’ve dedicated entire arcs to finding these things to bring people back from the dead and Bulma just collects them this time as a prize for her birthday party!? I mean, airplane, castle, giant diamond. Those aren’t good enough prizes. Nope, just gather the priceless Dragon Balls for something so frivolous. To quote Haruhi from Ouran, “Damn rich people.”
So, the Pilaf gang gets on their boat and head towards Bulma’s cruise ship. Their boat is sinking, they almost get eatten by a shark. Trunks and Goten save their lives and give them food, if this is going to be anything like Battle of the Gods, Trunks will soon be claiming that Mai is his ‘main squeeze’.
I’m enjoying how so far it’s similar enough to Battle of the Gods that you have a basic idea of what’s going to happen, but it’s different enough that you’re not bored. It elaborates on things like Beerus and his relationship with Whis, or changes the location of Bulma’s party from the back yard of Capsule corp to a fricken boat.
seeing the differences is a lot of fun, the only real complaint I have about this episode is that it kind of leaves the people who haven’t seen Dragon Ball high and dry with no context. Also, I’m going to keep saying this as long as King Kai is in the series. I CAN’T STAND HIS JAPANESE VOICE, King Kai is such an expressive character in the way he’s animated and his voice sounds SOOOO BORED! It’s driving me crazy! Soon Toei will wise up to how much money selling the rights to Funimation will make them and we’ll get it…soon.
I hope…

Apparently King Kai’s japanese voice actor has been sick for a while, so in Super, he hasn’t been able to pull off the energetic tones needed for the comedic scenes. It’s a shame, really….wish they’d let the poor guy take time off.
