Every week I think Dragon Ball Super won’t make me laugh and that something about it will make me feel anxious or underwhelmed and I am always proven wrong. The point this week that made me feel this way was “three whole minutes to get there”. This show really makes you remember how stupidly OP some of this shit is. Eh no big I can travel galaxies in half an hour. . .and that’s slow(though not really, he is the fastest un the universe).
I am really excited to hear this dubbed. The trouble with this is the show still isn’t licensed by the people who have been doing this show for forever and whose voices literally translate to the characters. I don’t know what Toei is doing and why the rights aren’t for sale yet but if I don’t hear Chris Sabat or Sean Schemmel soon I might blow a gasket. As a bit of a tidbit I think that one of the actors in the sub has been ill and it has limited his performance but I don’t wish to spread misinformation if that’s the case. All I can say is one of the performances in the show is suffering and if it is because someone is sick, I hope them a speedy recovery.
A lot of Dragon Ball is nostalgia for all of us. I think getting new voice actors and changing things in this kind of show is very hard and so many actors must have a nostalgic attachment to it. As an American fan that’s why it’s so very hard for me to watch it in Japanese- I am used to the very succinct flavor of the dub and some very distinguished voices from it. Dragon Ball has always had debates simply over which form of the dub is better, so imagine being a fan who then has to debate sub or dub and it becomes very. . .harsh. I think both have their merits and when a voice actor is feeling ill it contributes to a poor image when that is not necessarily fair.
My point with this line of thought is that some of the acting in this episode was really great and felt like the old stuff and some of it wasn’t. I wanted to bring this to your attention because if you’re nostalgically connected to Dragon Ball Super and find the sub to be lacking, I urge you wouldn’t judge the show too harshly. Though I doubt many Dragon Ball fans would ever truly insult the show itself, then again Sailor Moon’s fans have proven that nostalgia is both dead and immortal, I think whatever issues Super does have will be sorted out through digital release and different dubs/time to recover from illness. Namely, animation issues should be fixed on high resolution blue rays and dubs should solve any lack luster performances. Let’s hope if anyone is sick or feeling under the weather during recording they can have a speedy recovery so that the original Japanese of Dragon Ball Super still carries the nostalgic weight with its cast.
That being said I really like this episode for what it is: Goku is a derp, King Kai is trying to play it cool while knowing the world could end at any second, I love the villains even though they’re awful people, and I feel like a kid again. I shouldn’t feel so joyously pumped just to hear a bad joke or anticipate a fight scene caused by sheer stupidity: but Dragon Ball Super delivers. Unlike Midnight I have never seen Battle of the Gods so all of this is brand new content for me: hooray!
Watching Goku get knocked down a peg is certainly different. Though Goku routinely gets into rough and awful fights, Beerus exists literally to laugh in his face. He is the physical embodiment of a lolcat for Goku and that’s why he’s interesting. But the best part of this episode of Dragon Ball Super was not the humor, was not the lampshading, was not watching Goku’s next big opponent, no: it was Bulma’s throw away flirting with Vegeta. GET IT GIRL.
I like that couple okay?
Oki
This episode does what I wanted Super to do from the outset, which is expand on the meterial. In Battle of Gods, Goku just went Super Saiyan 3 and fought Beerus. Here he went through all his forms and still managed to lose. That’s what I want here, I want scenes that didn’t have much time focused on them in the movies to be expanded and given focus. That’s why I really liked this episode.
Also did you notice any like bad animation? People all over Twitter have been posting frames of the episode like it was horribly animated, but personally I didn’t notice. How about you?
Also did any of you see Resurrection F. And if so will there be a review?
Oki was kind enough to buy me tickets to Resurrection F for my birthday. I watched it and enjoyed it a whole lot, I was thinking of perhaps waiting until the DVD came out to do a review. I may do one sooner, I’ll have to ask Eva about it.
