This episode exists solely to make you feel a lot of emotions about Sweallow and his complicated last name. That nifty little curse he has finally shows its dark origin and we see very clearly he has had it from birth- to the point his mother could not feed him and despite loving him deeply could not bring herself to be touched by him. Incidentally, baby Sweallow might be the cutest little button I’ve ever seen. That begs the question though, they never say what happens to the poor maids who have to touch him. Ew.
Sweallow’s life has been freaking terrible. The truth of it is, he had a horrible life and its likely he had something to do with bringing his family to ruin. Eventually he caused the destruction of his entire section of the house and his family just glared at him as he sat in ruins. Meanwhile the only person who has stuck by him has been Meryl, who is also the key to his deal with Black Dragon. He took a wound for Meryl that was otherwise fatal and this sealed him to the service of Black Dragon. While we see this episode that Sweallow does indeed taint Nil Kamui with his nations power, he is feeling incredibly guilty and bears such a heavy burden.
Lou for once has a very menial role and eventually even seems to get insulted by her sword. Upon seeing Sweallow’s strength and curse he wonders what would happen if he wielded him instead. Lou basically gets shut down in that regard and it’s kind of satisfying to see, if only because it might mean Lou really is under a curse herself and might become a little different. No way this little pony is going to get off the crazy train entirely, but we can all hope right?
Now that we’ve seen how everyone is in the show and I absolutely love everyone, of course now we’ve got a plot element I hate. Inori, who is Ibuki’s younger sister, returns as a pawn for D’nAtia. I am not excited because I’m fairly sure it’s all going to be a fight for legitimacy and that is not something I want. The only thing possibly good that can come from this is Ibuki will step up to be king, but what will that take? Ibuki’s basically going to lose the last connection to his family because poor Inori looks brainwashed as hell.
I’m super excited to see Sweallow, Lou, and the group as they evolve. I’m very disgusting by the Inori plot point and how planned it really was, but that’s probably just a succesful writing technique to piss me off. Once again, we’ll wait and see! I’m kind of picturing Sweallow being super pissed and if he somehow saves the day with his friendship I’ll be happy! But now that he’s a highlighted ‘friend’ it’s pretty clear he’s out of the safe zone. . .I hate my life. This episode was mean to so many people. . . and it will only get worse.
