Or, the day Underboob-chan became best girl.
Impression
From now on, I am definitely watching this for Alisa.
Her presence made everything so much better. I don’t even care that her hat and clothes were gravity-defying, it was just so much fun watching her show off and engage Lenka in a contest filled with wordless sexual tension as they each tried to prove to the other that they were the flashier New-Type. I mean, she’s also walking fanservice, so that helped as well.
All these characters are still pretty empty, but Alisa is the first to prompt some sort of human reaction from Lenka – and that has to be a good thing, right? He was absolutely useless up until this episode, and I think the idea was that watching her taught him how to use his weapon properly as a fellow New-Type – he was never going to learn anything by himself in that training simulator. At times their scenes were cheesy too, like during the ending where they each killed the Aragami behind the other’s back, but I guess it’s all part of hyping up a romantic pairing between the two or something. I have no idea how it is in the game, but here Lenka’s already gotten between her legs, the lucky bastard. No seriously fuck you I’m so jealous
Alisa is the last remaining hope for this show because, from a perspective where intrinsic value isn’t influenced by hot Russian girls, this show is seriously starting to crumble under the weight of its own problems. Off the top of my head, there are two main issues: pacing and animation. I couldn’t believe we spent an entire episode on the plane journey alone – I was expecting it to take half an episode at most, with them returning to base after the commercial break. This is a one-cour series, which means they’ve now spent 25% of it on character introductions – is there even going to be time for a decent story at this point? As for the animation, its quality fluctuated quite a lot this week, and this is coming from someone who likes the shading and all that. The list of animators acknowledged in the credits seemed to go on forever. And to top it all off, God Eater is supposedly on an unplanned break next week, with Episode 4 only airing in two weeks’ time. That does not sound good, at all. I know they’ve decided to experiment with a lot of stuff on this project, but it’s too radical and there’s too much of it, and it’s all going to shit as a result. With the way things are going, it must be an emergency measure designed to sort all this out – when I heard, I was suddenly reminded of a distressed Kinoshita Seiichi from Shirobako sweating over his storyboards. At this rate, it’s as doomed as the decoy helicopter that was sent to distract that massive Aragami (what even is that thing?) that came floating down from the sky. Maybe Unlimited Budget Works isn’t so unlimited after all – things must be pretty bad at ufotable right now.
Which is why this show’s saving grace is watching One True Alisa jump off the side of a fucking moving plane, devouring monsters with an extending dragon head before landing back on and catching her hat before it flies away. Thank god this is cool.
I like to think that Alisa dresses like that to cut down on the supposed horror that is “boob sweat”. Actually, most of them have pretty drafty battle outfits! Honestly, I would do that too (not to Alisa’s extent so help me) if there’s no armor that could actually help. Who knows why Lindow and Soma wear such “heavy” outfits, but I like those too!
It was great for Lenka to finally get a demonstration on what he can do with his New-Type. He’s certainly the quick learner and it felt like he was just trying to keep up. Alisa was the one who kind of lost her cool about no longer being the only one, but she did it in a spectacular fashion. Of course, both Lenka and her lost it when watching the grand Aragami and I loved how Lindow just took in the sight like the boss he is!
I, too, am not sure where this is heading. Right now I just want to see Alisa apologize or even acknowledge Lenka as a teammate eventually. Poor guy, having to be decent while trying to avoid having his neck snapped :v Survival in the “desert” sure didn’t prepare him for that!
I don’t know why she dresses like that, but I’m not about to complain 😀 I guess she’s acknowledged Lenka in the sense that she spent the episode trying to out-do him after he showed he could devour something with his New-Type too – but yeah, I have a feeling he’ll have to get her to thaw out before she starts being a friendly person.
No you’re mistaken…the budget is unlimited but the manpower is not they can only handle so much before they break
I guess manpower was an issue too – the list of animators who worked on the episode in the credits was horrendously long. I don’t know what processes are involved with this animation style, but a lot of them can’t have had too much experience with it, which meant that quality suffered.
