This week’s episode felt for most part an obligatory fill-in-the-gap episode to allow the story to proceed to to the next stage. Since the majority of the episode was primarily filled up with wandering around, a silly “defining happiness” fight between Yuuya and Crow, and realizing just how Reira has no idea how to be a kid (he can only function properly by being given ‘orders’.) There are only three things you need to to know.
#1: Shun, Dennis and Gongenzaka along with all the Commons in the underground arena were arrested by the security.
#2: Yuuya, Selena, Sawatari, Crow, Shinji (Crow’s friend) and the kids were also captured by the security and arrested
#3: Reira is the only one who was able to escape thanks to Tsukikage showing up at the right time to get him out of there. Selena is the only one who saw him, so until she tells Yuuya, he will continue to be frantic.
Now the joke here is that getting arrested turns out to be the fastest way to regroup. With everyone with the except of Reiji, Tsukikage and Reira, the majority of the team are back together, which the security may come to regret because as we know, this group is simply chaotic- mind you, they don’t necessarily need Duel Disks to cause problems. Think about it, we have the Escape Artist Selena who was heavily guarded at Academia, so I’m sure she has a couple of prison breaks ideas up her sleeve. Crow who has been arrested before (nothing like a veteran prisoner), Sawatari’s loud mouth a potential to start a riot, Shun- he could probably start a riot pretty easily too, take out a few cops while he’s at it, Dennis and Yuuya would probably do some ridiculous theatrics, and Gongenzaka… I don’t think he’ll do much with the type of character he is. I am curious to see what kind of contribution he would make to their prison break. Okay so prison break isn’t confirmed, but there is a whole lot of potential with these characters that I would just love to see what they would do or try to do. But most importantly, I wonder if they are in line to get the criminal mark.
It was pretty messed up to see how while the Tops citizens were participating in the Illegal Underground Arena, they get escorted out by the security who are there only to shut it down and arrest the Commoners and Foreign Targets. Here I was thinking Gongenzaka was going to be okay, but clearly I have the security way too much credit. Jean-Michel has a nasty plot in mind which involving “cleaning the city”, and I don’t like how of he has been taking a hold of every opportunity to to find a way to strip the Commoners of the limited freedom and throw them into the prison camps.
With the social discrimination, wherever Reiji is right now- I have no doubt in my mind he would go as far to take advantage of this conflict to make the Commoners feel as if they are in his debt if he and his so-called Lancers successfully overthrow Jean-Michel and his Security Force. Of course that is not to say there isn’t a rebellion being organized already!
Funny thing about this is that Yusei went to prison in the 6th episode of 5D’s where Yuya and gang get in jail at the 6th episode based on the Synchro Dimension. Next thing you know they’ll probably at least be there 4-5 episodes like Yusei did.
Lastly, I think I put this comment before but just incase about the Lancers having problems. Most of them have their own separate/common goals, one’s a double-agent and the man constructed the team doesn’t give much thought about them and likely planned their situations which explains Tsukiage taking Reira. Overall, the Lancers in these episodes were based on developing their own characters instead going blindly towards ones orders and being buddy-buddy about everything.
Their independent development will benefit their battles in the long run. 🙂
Hi I’m CaptainMarvel4Ever (you can call me Cap for short), big fan of the site and your reviews, this is my first time commenting. Funny story, I had been thinking about 5D’s a lot over the past few months, and last month when I was looking at some images I stumbled onto your review of episode 31 of 5D’s from a few years back (ironically a very Crow centric episode), and it brought a nice smile to my face, and I wished I could have been here at the time it was written to say how nice it was. Then 2 weeks ago I found out Arc-V had 5D’s characters and immediately watched the entire series in less then a week. A few days ago I’m looking up images from Arc-V then low and behold I find that your still doing reviews, so I read a bunch of them, and now here I am getting to be part of it, and getting the chance to tell you how great they are.
Now that that’s out of the way, I pretty much agree, it was the standard fill in episode, but thankfully an entertaining one. The Riding Duel was fun, but what was more interesting was just seeing daily life for Crow and the kids. My favorite part was just that one little throw away moment when the two kids were playing cards and arguing about synchro summoning (as kids probably would). Seeing more of Reira was great, and I think it was a smart idea to use Crow as the one to try and get him to open up a little. Lastly I really enjoyed that stupid argument between Crow and Yuya, and really enjoyed seeing Crow duel again (gave me chills). I’m also really enjoying Jean-Michel Roger a lot, he’s basically Godwin light. It was also nice to see that Sawatari isn’t just going to be comedic relief, and is capable of handling a mission competently.
One little thing that I thought was a bit odd was that Crow’s friend is named Shinji. That seems odd to me because up until this point everyone in the Synchro dimension seem to have very western based names (Amanda, Melissa, Frank, Gallager, Tanner) which I thought was pretty cool. That being said I fully admit it’s nothing more then a nit pick.
Can’t wait for next episode, one of my favorite parts of 5D’s was Yusei’s time in prison. (also sorry for such an overly long comment, I’ll try not to get too carried away in the future)
Thank you so much <3 I am happy to hear you enjoy my coverages!
I agree, Crow was probably the best character to help Reira open up and feel a little bit more comfortable. It made me happy to see how well he interacted with him, but sad at the same time because Reira has been living a pretty rough life. Although he looks up to Reiji and feels the most secure around him, I honestly wonder what kind of brother Reiji has been to Reira since from what we have seen so far, he has been pretty cold due to his mission to put a stop to Academia's invasions.
The prison time in was also one of my favourite parts in 5Ds and it is pretty awesome how neatly they lined it up with these series. I am excited to see how they will behave in the prison, how they will plan a break out, and what sort of chaos I more or less expect them to create! XD
I wonder how they’ll see Jack after this. Being prisoners puts a bit of a damper on their efforts.
