I want to see my mom. For children growing up without a mother, this is a very normal request. Amami has kept this wish in her heart for so long, that the paper that she wrote it on is old and crumpled, and she refused to hang it up for it to be granted, thinking it was selfish of her to put it up on top of another wish. Honestly, Amami is too nice. Her other wish was that she wished to make more friends, which Inoue crumpled up because obviously Amami would always have her friends with her. Though talking from a girl that mainly had ghost friends for all her life, wanting more human friends is pretty understandable. But the main issue here is her mother.
Ignoring the advice from the slasher-site ghost, roll-call samurai and Kogal enter Amami’s memories, as Kogal remembered a warm feeling from Amami when she had possessed her body. They go through her memories to enter a room at the very end, with Yuuhi watching Amami sleep. She welcomes them both in and goes on to speak to the two of them. Kogal and samurai insist she goes to see Amami, as she had held on to the wish for a long time. Yuuhi really wants to, but says she can’t because she has to watch over the flowers in the room. Without her powers in the room keeping those flowers alive…well, she never really explained. She brought up that subject over and over but never explained, so I was just sitting there frustrated what the risk would be if she would leave the room for a short time. Samurai and Kogal insist that they stay and watch the place, but Yuuhi says the both of them won’t be enough. But then the perverted cat actually does something nice and brings all the other ghosts to help out. And so Yuuhi leaves.
I expected a more tearful reunion when the two met. It was cute how Amami said “It’s nice to meet you” to her own mother. It was a little awkward, but she was able to have her wish. And like she said her wishes always came true every year. For the first time, Yuuhi was able to hold her own daughter. And the two hold on to each other, and Amami falls asleep on her mother’s lap. When she wakes up next morning, she sees the paper where she wrote her wish in front of her. She went outside to thank roll-call samurai and Kogal, because her mother explained to her what happened. But when she went out, she couldn’t find them. More like, she couldn’t see them. Amami leaves her home, running through trying to find any spirit.
And that’s when I understood. The reason why Yuuhi didn’t want to leave was because if she did, the flowers would die, her powers wouldn’t be there, and so Amami would lose her sixth sense ability. So this begs the question? Yuuhi’s ghost was bound to Amami, right? Was meeting Amami and holding her her last wish? Did she pass on after that? If it was, that explains why Amami can’t see ghosts anymore. The reason why she even could was because of her mother’s ability. If she didn’t pass on, she could have gone back into Amami. Or was it that the flowers died because the other ghosts still weren’t enough, and she has no way to get back in? I’m sure there’ll be an explanation next episode, but it’s a fact that Amami has lost her ability. Just how will she react to all this, having this ability her whole life, to suddenly be gone?
I actually looked up the morning glory flower to see if it had any significance to the episode. From what I found, in Chinese folklore, the morning glory flower represents two lovers from China, that were separated by the gods and were only allowed to see each other once a year. In Victorian lore, the flower represents love and affection, or the shortness of life/resurrection. Not exactly what happened, but it was a mother and daughter that were finally able to meet for the first, and probably last, time. And of course Yuuhi shows love and affection for her own daughter by caring for the flowers and watching over her daughter day by day.
The wait for next week is one full of worrying, although, I really should know better. I’m sure they’ll find some solution to this. I should also know better than to think I can get through an episode without wanting to tear up! This show gets me every time and I love that it’s always over something meaningful.
OH NOOOOO I didn’t even consider that Hibiki meeting her mother was the reason her powers are gone. I really hope there’s some happy solution though; Hibiki has more friends in the spirit world than in the real world. ;_; Gahh this anime seems so light-hearted, but it manages to make me cry every single week.
Also, this was really great analysis of the episode! It was really insightful and I definitely would not have come to these conclusions on my own. 🙂
