Owari no Seraph is a show that has been hinged on what it was going to show us. We’ve known two things from essentially the beginning: Yu’s greatest motivation is that he wants to kill vampires for killing his family and enslaving him, and that the person he cared about most was actually not dead and in fact a vampire. Because of this I’ve been eagerly waiting for one thing: When these two facts are discovered by both parties and Mika and Yu meet again.

Almost nothing about this episode is worth talking about until the ending. Everything is simply build up to what we’re going to really be seeing next episode. And all I can say is? Finally. Not only did this episode deliver the reactions of seeing your dead best friend alive in front of you on a silver platter, but it did one better: Mika is stabbing Guren in the heart as Yu sees him. Yu literally impales Mika on his sword before he sees his face, and that is the scene we are left with.

Nothing about this is going to be good. This episode until that point was a misrepresentation of what it was going to be. There was a happy flashback to Mika and Yu as children, nonchalantly going through the bases and then declaring they were going to go help Guren. Finding teamwork and helping each other. Then Guren, who might possibly be genuinely dead, is stabbed by Mika in front of Yu. There is no going back now. There is no more bullshit. Everything from this show is now pain and suffering.

I love it. I want it. Give me next week this very instance, I just cannot get over the gradual change in expression from sheer anger to realizing the vampire who is destroying the one who gave him the chance for vengeance is the very reason he needs vengeance: the person he loves most, his family, his friend, even more if you think about it deeply. No matter what this episode was it ended where the series was, and now an arc is officially over. Yu’s ignorance and hope that he can find vengeance is buried in Guren’s heart.

How can he avenge his friend by killing him?

There is an ongoing Seraph LN prequel that serves as a companion piece to the manga. Called “Ichinose Guren’s Catastrophe at 16 Years of Age”, it covers the exploits of a teenage Guren and the events leading up to the Apocalypse. The LN gives more backstory on the different factions and surviving characters pre-Apocalypse, and is vital in understanding character personalities in the manga.

Also, a fanbook has recently confirmed Asuramaru is a boy.

    * If I want to share LN spoilers, how do I do this here?

There is a spoiler codec you can use: [ spoiler ] INSERT SPOILER CONTENT HERE [ /spoiler ]
(remove the space in order for it to function properly). It is the same format as you would use in most forums.

Vol 1 of the Seraph LN ends with a chilling description of the events to unfold, and foreshadowing of the titular Seraph:-

[spoiler]It was “a story about love, hate, war, murder, lies, and desire…and as [those] desires expanded, it would lead to [the end of the world]…a story about the time before [the end of] humanity: a story about how ugly and desperate humans would become; just before the hammer fell onto the world as the Seraph of the End blows the trumpet of [the Apocalypse]“.[/spoiler]
