The romance and the bromance are strong in this show. Very strong. I just can’t get over how sweet this show is.
It’s the day of Yamato’s birthday and Suna’s father’s surgery. Before leaving for the date, Takeo greets Suna. Later he then meets up with Yamato, who is looking absolutely adorable. Promising Suna he was going to have a fun time, the pair do just that. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, these two are the cutest, cheesiest little dummies in love, I just love seeing them together. They go bowling, and Takeo can freaking hold a bowling ball in the palm of his hand. He can hold the thing like a normal ball! And poor Yamato can barely lift it! And for some reason, he just starts juggling bowling balls. He’s juggling bowling balls! Any normal person probably would have died if they tried doing that. That is so crazy. He is so crazy. They’re having fun, laughing, smiling, taking selfies, then they go to a nice little cafe. It’s a very elegant and quaint place, and then the people in the cafe bring out a birthday cake for Yamato and start singing “Happy Birthday” like most restaurants do. She exclaims her wish out loud: Spending upcoming birthdays with Takeo. Aww! And so they eat yummy cake.
As they leave the place, they hold hands, and Takeo explains that Suna helped him come up with the itinerary for their date. Yamato then asks what Suna is doing at that very moment, and then the mood changes. It’s two o’ clock, the same time the surgery starts. Takeo had promised Suna he wouldn’t arrive for the surgery, but he changes his mind. Takeo explains the situation, gives her the tickets to the planetarium, and her present. He apologizes, but Yamato doesn’t mind at all (what an angel). She was upset that he was keeping something so important from her, and she had no problem and even encouraged him to hurry to the hospital. And so he leaves.
Suna anticipated Takeo’s arrival, just knowing what kind of person Takeo is. So far in the show, we haven’t seen much emotion from Suna. We’ve really only seen him laugh and smile, and that’s only when he’s around Takeo. But he displayed so much pain and sadness, it’s a little shocking considering he’s usually so cool headed. For once, he tells Takeo about his father and how bad his condition always was. How his father was sensitive and spoiled him and his sister, and that this was actually his second surgery. He didn’t break down or go into a sob fit or anything, but just to hear his voice quiver, to see him twiddle his fingers in nervousness, just to see him shed just one tear was enough to move me. But for once, he was able to tell Takeo something very personal, which was always so hard for him to do, which is why he barely told him then.
The surgery finishes and Takeo almost kills the doctor to know whether or not everything went well. Well, they did. It went fine. Suna is relieved, and then is when his mother and sister run in and also almost kill the doctor and make him puke, demanding where his room is and whatnot. What a nice family.
The boys head out and enter the lobby, to see none other that Yamato. She had gone to the planetarium, but she was thinking about the surgery so much that she came to the hospital too. She even made a string of paper cranes as a little get well present (she’s an angel I’m telling you!). They talk, press on for Suna to get a girlfriend so they can go on double dates, and so on. They wave farewell to Yamato at the station, they go to the butt tree, and all is well.
Just like Hideki, I can’t find any complaints about this show. Every week I watch it, I never get bored. I just care so much about the characters and the things they go through. People can argue that this show is slow or boring, but I just don’t think so. It’s a very relaxing, refreshing, sweet show. The trio really care about each other, and I care about them too. I wanted the date to go well, I wanted Suna’s dad to pull through. I feel for them. Like I was saying about slice of life shows when I was reviewing Koufuku Graffiti, when there is no plot (or in this show’s case, a simple plot), the characters are the one that are supposed to drive the show. Ore Monogatari is also a romance, so yes that makes things easier when it comes to plot, but the characters still drive this story. And right now, they’re doing a fantastic job.
