It’s not an anime if you don’t have a New Year’s episode, am I right? But what makes this episode fun? Well, the ghosts of course. It wouldn’t be Re-Kan if they weren’t around.
And just like I knew, Ghost Girl is still sticking around. I’m not too surprised really. She really makes the show fun, and the way she teases roll-call samurai is funny. Anyway, this episode’s conflict? Amami is too damn nice. Which we all already knew, but lately she’s ready to topple over because of lack of sleep, which is because she keeps helping ghosts. Looking for things, sewing, all of that. The group notices this so they head over to Amami’s house to ask her dad what they can do. He gets out a box with a pair of seemingly regular glasses. But in fact they’re sixth-sense-suppression specs. They do what the name implies; the glasses supresses sixth sense. Amami’s mother used to wear them, and so when Amami puts them on, she won’t be able to see or even hear any ghosts around her. The group really wants Amami to relax and stay away from ghosts, so she can have time for herself, but of course Amami still buys food for the ghosts even if she can’t see them.
A couple times she tries to take the glasses off. But when the group was at her house, Inoue told Amami that if she would take off the glasses, they wouldn’t be friends anymore. Extremely childish, but Amami sincerely believes that. Ah…Amami…
And so when she plays with a child in the park, to find out that his sister has gone missing, she tries to help. But when it gets late, she gets desperate. She calls Inoue’s cell and cries on the phone, saying sorry for wanting to take off the glasses and ruining their friendship. But Inoue can tell she wants to take them off for an emergency, so she does. And yada yada they find the girl. We all know Inoue wouldn’t break up their friendship for something small like that, but Amami is a little…gullible? She should pick her words wisely around her. This whole glasses thing was a little unnecessary, I was just thinking that they should just talk to Amami and tell her to take a break. But then I thought, nah, Amami’s not gonna change. That’s just who she is. It’s a good thing to be helpful and kind, but when it’s too much it can be a bad thing. For someone like Amami, it’s better to use force such as those glasses.
Anyway, the other half of the episode is New Year. The group head out for their first shrine visit. All is fine and fun. Inoue gets a little drunk from the amazake, and when the group presses on asking her embarrassing questions, like who she likes, all she answers is her grandma. It was pretty cute, and funny. No doubt Inoue had a strong relationship with her late grandmother. They eat mochi, bring some to the murder-site ghost, make snowmen, and all that cute stuff. Typical New Year’s episode.
Really, I think the spotlight of this episode were the pair, ghost girl and roll-call samurai. They’re hilarious together. We see ghost girl when she was trying to talk to Amami when she was wearing the glasses, which roll-call samurai explains. It’s at this moment that ghost girl teases samurai about his crush on Amami, and since Amami couldn’t hear them now would be the perfect time to confess to her, or at least practice it. For the rest of that day, they watch over Amami and they also help her out when she called for them and other ghosts to look for the little girl that went missing. They also popped up in the picture Uehara took on her phone with the mochi, which ghost girl was happily eating while samurai was starving, not wanting to eat until Amami did. And in the very end, when the gross cat was going to harass Amami, roll-call samurai fought him with ghost girl in the back cheering him on and yelling “Uppercut!” Now that ghost girl made up with her mom, I don’t think we’ll be seeing her possess Amami’s body anymore. But if we can see her hanging out with roll-call samurai more, I’d be very happy. Honestly these two are my favorites.
I’ve gotta say, I’m kinda liking the ghosts more than the actual main characters. They just make the show a lot more fun. And next week? More ghosts! It looks like it’ll be a child, so it can either be cute or sad.
Thanks for reviewing and posting about RE-KAN ! I think it is a very under the radar anime! It’s funny / the ghosts are cool and really important lots of life lessons!
I agrEE Kogyaru and Daihenzamurai (samurai) play some nice roles ! Nana is cool too!
As far as the characters go Amami , Inoue, Uehara are key but I am liking Amami’s dad too ! He had to fight the ghosts for the glasse!
I hope Mary- Kan makes an appearance!
I just watched the episode and was about to comment on the fact that they seem like they’re going to introduce Mary really soon! Surely it won’t be like the ‘original’ version of the story that I read a few minutes ago, but there are a number of safe connections it may have to Uehara’s past.
