Ah Denpa Kyoushi. I can always count on your show to, while not being the most plot heavy show in the world, at least be a pleasant experience (well, most of the time). So let’s see… we had a girl being bullied, a girl who almost got expelled for working in a maid cafe, and a violent guy who couldn’t let people in. So what in the world do we have this time?
Ah. A girl who doesn’t want to talk….Interesting. Okay, well maybe if we start from the beginning it will all make sense.
So the episode begins with Kagami’s sister having a friend who’s a classmate in Kagami’s class. She’s having trouble with a subject and a big test is coming up for it. She asks him if she can help her study, however, the weird thing is, she doesn’t talk, she speaks only in text messages. Huh…where have I heard that before?
OH SHIT! SHE’S SHINING FINGER! HIT THE DECK!!
(runs back to his microwave and puts on his headphones)
(For those of you who do not get that, that’s a little Stein’s Gate humor there)
Anyway, Kagami wonders why she won’t speak. Turns out it’s because she doesn’t like speaking as her voice is what people call “An anime voice”. Apparently her voice sounds so much like an anime character that she got weird attention from it and hates the sound of her own voice.
She does however like this American singer and wants to go to her concert. Unfortunately she can only go if she makes a score in the top ten of her grade.
Once Kagami hears that her voice is like an anime’s, he immediately decides to help her study, but only if she agrees to speak to him if she passes. Begrudgingly, she accepts.
Kagami then feels the best way to teach her is to program a video game for her where the attacks are done by solving equations.
After a while, she still doesn’t seem to get it, Kagami stays up all night creating her an easier to understand version, but when giving it to her, collapses from lack of sleep.
Kanan (the girl’s name) feels so bad about making him overwork that she tries to speak to him even before the test. However he declines saying that he hasn’t lived up to his side of the bargain yet.
Full of renewed vigor she studies harder. The day of the exam she texts him that she hates her voice and loves this singer’s because it doesn’t sound ridiculous. Kagami tells that that’s silly as everyone in the world likes different things and who cares if some people don’t like her voice. They don’t matter.
A sense of pressure off her chest she whispers into his ear and goes off and passes the test, and that’s where the episode ends.
This episode was actually very cute. It did a lot of things right and really did show a sweet side of Kagami. We know he’s an eccentric, lazy otaku, but at heart he’s a really good guy. He cares about people and when it’s something he cares about, he becomes really dedicated.
To put it shortly, Kanan, while at first can be a little irritating with the whole “No talking” thing, really does grow on you and you find yourself liking her more and more as the episode progresses. Of course, one thing I found really amusing was the choice of song. They had the American diva sing “Amazing Grace”. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s a great song, I just don’t know many singers who go on tour with “Amazing Grace” as their hit single. (Shrug) I’unno, that’s just me.
The only thing I can’t figure out with this show is if they’re going anywhere with an overarcing plot. We know that the point of the first school was to get him into this second school, but I don’t know if they’re going to GO anywhere with it, or if this is just a cute fart around show.
Still, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t having fun with this show. Kanan is pretty adorable, and the lesson is a good one. Be yourself and don’t worry what others think. All in all, it was a pretty good episode and I hope next week is as good as this.
Episode 7.5/10
