So we’re back to another wacky episode of the show that will eventually answer the questions, “Will the cat become part of the chinese zodiac?” Actually… that brings up another good question. If someone other than the 12 DOES win and becomes part of the zodiac…how do they tell the humans? Do like….they walk up to the leader of china and go like “oh hey, by the way, we gods decided you should take out the dog and put in the cat?” How exactly..do you implement that? Magic? Huh…that’s actually a good question.
But wait, i’m getting sidetracked. And it’s only the beginning. Jeez. Okay I better just get started.
So the episode starts up with us finding out that Nya-tan actually has a small house built outside of Takeru’s. It turns out that the house was built after the dragon lady destroyed the house in the first episode. Which they actually reference ala fourth wall break.
However, now that she has a house, she has no furniture so they go to buy her some. When they get to the store however she realizes she doesn’t have any money. She figures she’ll get some from advancing her salary from her job at the maid cafe.
Upon arriving we see that a bunch of the other spirits work there as well and tell her that she can go straight to hell as she doesn’t actually do any work so she doesn’t get any money. And then the manager punches her.
She gets upset and leaves to go cry when Takeru shows up and basically tells her that she is entirely to blame and she should apologize. Man….I really like Takeru sometimes.
She does go back to apologize, however that’s when the Chu-tan shows up (aka the badass mouse of the zodiac) and to be honest….she’s actually pretty awesome.
For some reason that’s not told to us yet she hates the cat of the zodiac and wants to fight her. She tells Nya-tan that if she wins the battle she’ll give her her spot in the zodiac. Nya-tan, being a derp gladly accepts even though everyone else tells her it’s a terrible idea.
After she apologizes to the rest of them she gets her sol/lul and starts to fight Chu-tan.
Well okay, fight is a strong word. More like a one sided ass beating.
When things look at their worst, Nya-tan’s friend the boar realizes she has to save her and decides to break the rules by jumping into the battle herself.
As she does so clumsily she immediately gets accidentally impaled….in the head.
So because the boar randomly jumped in, the battle fucks up and is considered void and cancelled before Chu-tan can finish off Nya-tan and they’re all sent back.
Now here’s the thing. the boar girl gets injured so wackily you as the audience are like “tee hee oh that’s so silly. Oh well, Nya-tan will thank her and we’ll go on as normally.” And actually, this caught me off guard. I did not expect this.
THE BOAR GIRL FUCKING DIES.
Like…not comedically, not as a joke. She fucking dies.
I have to admit. I did NOT think the show would do that. Kudos show. You really caught me off guard on that one.
And that’s where the episode ends.
First off, once again I have to start with this. I don’t really like Nya-tan. She’s a selfish, derpy idiot. She doesn’t do anything and is annoying as fuck. However, I think that’s what the show is trying to go for. It seems that the characters are not facilitating the way she acts but trying to teach her lessons, especially Takeru which is commendable. Hopefully by the end I won’t call her the annoying fuck she is now especially with the death of her friend.
Speaking of which. Yes, the death of the boar girl. When I saw this scene I was actually more than a little shocked. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable with tropes and can normally see what’s coming a mile away but i have to say…I didn’t see this one coming. At first I thought maybe they were doing this as a joke, but…but no. She’s dead. They even play all the clips of her from the first 3 episodes during the credits and then put her concept art at the end saying “Goodbye” along with her catchphrase “yep yep”
I did NOT think this was the kind of show that would do that and i’m more than a little impressed.
Overall though i’m enjoying this show. I like most of the zodiac people, the cow, tiger, mouse, and rooster being my favorites. I don’t really like the main girl though unfortunately. The way they’re doing it though it almost feels like you’re SUPPOSED to not like her right now. Which would be good if they used that to their advantage to flip it around.
The beginning of the episode was a bit slow with the whole “going around shopping for stuff” and “being lazy and greedy” but the fact that none of them put up with her shit as well as the twist ending, this was overall a good episode.
Episode 7.5/10
the problem here is that there is literally no one left to kill, other than the actual Zodiac girls and I sincerely doubt that’s going to happen. Even if they were going for a Madoka Magica kind of deal you’d think there would have been some foreshadowing of this, as it is it just feels like a sharp left turn out of comedy and the mood whiplash is severe. Like, this was a comedy, character death like this has no place in comedy, what the hell is going on?
