Holy crap. You mean this is the last episode of food porn apalooza? Hot damn. As I know you’re all so excited about just how enveloping this plot is, let’s just jump right in to the final episode.
So the episode starts up with the gang looking at the board to see if they made it into the high school they’ve been trying all this time to get into. And surprise surprise, they did.
Since Kirin passed, she’s going to need to stay in Tokyo to go to school. And it was decided that she would stay with Ryou.
It’s about this time that Akira (Ryou’s relative) shows up and gives her a gift. It’s Ryou’s Grandmother’s apron. She wanted her to have it when she graduated middle school, but since she passed away before that, it was left to Akira to give it to Ryou. Needless to say, she’s a bit happy over the development, if not a little sad.
Knowing that she’ll have Kirin over for dinner she decides to make the dish that her grandmother made the first day of middle school for her.
However, for some reason it’s not as good as she remembers.
Then she eats it with Kirin and realizes all it was missing was someone to share it with.
The next morning Kirin talks about how happy she is that she’ll be living at Ryou’s house. The only problem is, Ryou’s literally the only person who doesn’t know.
It seems that Akira forgot to tell her as she got so excited over the apron.
But of course Ryou’s okay with it and the episode ends with them all eating dinner.
However, we have about 20 seconds of during credits video. What should we do? You got it. FOOD PORN MONTAGE!
Now, how was this episode?
Well, to be honest, it was one of the better episodes, but…for this series, that isn’t saying a whole lot.
If Seinfeld is a show about nothing, this is a food porn show about nothing.
Nothing of interest or value really happens during the whole series. Yes it’s a slice of life show, but….damn. Azumanga Daioh had more of a coherent plot.
This episode had some cute moments, but maybe went a tad overboard on the missing grandma thing. We get it. You miss her. You have awful parents who leave you alone after your caretaker dies and sends you packages of things you could buy down the street.
The only thing we really learn is that they’re all going to be in the same high school together and that Kirin will be living with her. Possibly to do many things….possibly involving scissors.
This series definitely has strong yuri undertones, however, they never seemed to go anywhere with it. It could have been unintentional, but with all the food porn, i’m not so sure.
Still, I have to say, albeit slow as the show usually is, this episode was okay. 6.5/10.
Overall, the series would be this.
Head: There is no plot to this show. Girls want to get into a school and have food porn. That’s about it. 3/10
Eye: it’s a very cute show, EXCEPT FOR THE FOOD PORN SCENES. Seriously, this has bugged me since episode 1. The style changes, the dialogue gets weird, overall it feels like a different show…..which would have much higher of a rating. the dichotomy is so weird it takes away points. 5/10
Heart: This is the only chance this show could have to redeeming some points, however Ryou really isn’t that interesting of a character. She’s totally subdued, boring, and has an obvious fetish for food. Her interaction with Kirin is nice, but i would have preferred if they dropped the subtext and just had them kiss already. The show just…didn’t do it for me on an emotional level. The morals were shoved in your face and half the characters felt stagnant. The only character with any real life was Kirin and she was batshit insane. Heart 4/10
total 12/30
This is not a series I would own. besides the fact of feeling dirty, It’s just not interesting. Now let’s see if Berry Agrees with me. Berry?
Btw, one more food porn for old times sakes
Yeah. yeah i’m done. Peace out.
-Hideki
Berry’s Final Impression
OH DAMN IT. THE LAST PICTURE HIDEKI USED IS THE ONE I WANTED TO MAKE FUN OF. HE BEAT ME TO IT. GRRR. das nasty ryou.
Okay so I honestly forgot about this show’s finale during the weekend. I sometimes forget about this show, but this past weekend it really flew over my head. While in bed, I literally jumped out and remembered to watch it since I would be at school the whole day. So! That should tell you how I feel about this show.
You would think that I would add more to the episode, but nope. Hideki pretty much explained everything. They obviously pass their exams, the girls move in together, and everyone celebrates in the end. I don’t know how you can not tell someone you’re moving in with them though? Some really sweet and cute parts were of the picture of Ryou’s grandmother changing, depending on the mood of the situation. Flashbacks of the grandmother were sweet as well, though yeah it was getting to the point where I was getting really tired of it. Yes, we get it, Ryou greatly misses her grandmother. Yes, we get it, food tastes better when eating it with someone else. You basically told us that in the first episode, you didn’t need to tell us again. So…this episode was only okay.
This whole show was…whatever. I thought the first episode was going to set us up for some deep bonding between the girls, maybe with a little drama, just to spice things up. Because with a slice of life show, you need a little drama to make things interesting. Then again, you don’t need drama. Sometimes slice of life shows are fun with no plot, but they have enjoyable characters. Unfortunately, Koufuku Graffiti fails with all of the above. There’s no real drama, maybe some emotional parts. Ryou missing her grandmother touched me, but they kinda jammed it into us in the course of the show. Plus, the characters fell flat for me. The girls bonding only worked for me in just a couple episodes, while the rest of the show is forgettable.
The episodes I did like were both times they went to Shiina’s house, probably because of best maid Tsuyuko-san. The other being the pizza episode with the super shy neighbor. To an extent, I could relate to the super shy Uchiki, having trouble making friends and all. Also, the pizza looked delicious. With the second time they went to Shiina’s house, I liked the advice Tsuyuko gave to Ryou, about accepting help from others. And the girls cooking for Ryou was very nice. But other than that, I kinda forgot what the other episodes were about. Which is bad.
I understand what message they’re trying to convey! Eating food with others creates bonds and relationships, and that’s something I wholeheartedly agree on, but the problem was that they needed an extra oomph! at it. Like, I wish they had done a little more. The episodes I mentioned above that I liked did well to make the episodes fun and emotional. But the others didn’t. Honestly, it was a chore getting through this show, and I’m surprised I even finished watching it.
Plot was bleh, characters were bleh, sound was bleh except for the TABERUUUU with the dancing chibis in the end, and animation was bleh. Though the animation wasn’t as bad as Mekakucity Actors, though I dropped that show. The food porn scenes were…an interesting choice, to say the least. From beginning to end those scenes freaked me out, but here’s one thing I will say about those scenes that I liked. The girls weren’t sexualized. I guess? That might sound weird, since they kinda were, but at the same time they weren’t. If you noticed, the only male character in the show is Kirin’s father, and he’s just a poor meek man that loves his daughter. When the girls eat, they aren’t being in a weird and creepy situation around boys that would make the scene even more weird than it is. When they were at the park eating those cutlet sandwiches, there were guys looking at them, but they weren’t like “OH FUUUUUUCK”, they were more like “WHAT…THE FUCK?” Even in the first episode, Kirin mentioned how erotic Ryou looked when eating. And Ryou made a fool of herself in front of her friends at the sports thing too. So I guess I’m just glad the girls weren’t in creepy situations in the show because of those scenes. Now, for the men actually watching this show…ah, I don’t want to know.
Let me wrap up. Like I said, there was no plot, so it was the characters’ jobs to make the show fun, but that fell flat. There were only a few episodes I enjoyed, but the rest was forgettable. Forgettable enough that I would actually forget to watch the show! I know what they were trying to do, but they kinda failed at it. This show was an okay show, but this isn’t something I would recommend watching. If you like the simple “cute girls doing cute (sexy eating?) things” then this show is for you. And this just proves again that those types of shows are just not for me. So, all in all, I would rate this show a 5/10. It can be good at times, but it’s pretty boring, and I’m just glad I finished it.
