We take a week off from judging the souls of the dead for some character introductions and plot. We begin the episode when a very story book like narrative of a boy who sees a girl out skating on the ice with her dog. It’s a cute storybook story and we see that it’s a dream that Kuro is having. She’s apparently had it a few times now, she gets up, showers, get dressed for work and heads into Quindecim.
She talks with Decim for a bit, whose eye does this funny thing like bounce around in his socket. Apparently, that’s what happens when Arbiters get the memories of their guests. She goes to greet the guests and he stops her and says that there is something strange this time. So an older gentleman and a kid come out of the elevator and into the bar.
The kid is sort of timid and the man is loud, obnoxious and demanding. He demands a beer and so Decim gets him one.
Problem, he starts freaking out because he’s met Decim before. Totally spazzes out and takes the kid hostage and threatens to kill him if he doesn’t get to be let go. Good plan but uh, you know that you’re already dead right? Decim ties him up with that neat little string trick of his and Kuro goes to check on the kid….
SURPRISE, the kid isn’t a kid at all. He knocks out Kuro and we see…the red haired guy from the opening. Ginti is his name and he doesn’t seem like he’s too fond of Decim. Also, he’s not too happy that a human isn’t being judged.
So Kuro here is human huh? Apparently she came down to Quindecim with knowledge that really screwed them up. She knew that she was dead. So Nona wiped her totally clean of everything and now she’s working as Decim’s assistant.
While all of this is going on, we see Nona with the older gentleman from the opening playing a game of pool with balls that resemble the solar system. They discuss how long she has been in charge and other things over the game and how many times they’ve played. They never mention the old mans name during this scene, after some careful research on the internet I have discovered that his name is Oculus.
He is the man that is closest to God, whatever that means.
So after Nona beats him in their game of universe pool, she goes up to Quindecim. Where she finds Decim and Ginti locked in battle. A battle that looks REALLY COOL. Water spheres vs Piano Wire! I need more of this kind of combat in my life.
-clears throat- Anyway, Ginti goes off like a baby about Kuro. Nona tells him to lay off, Clavis is adorable and I love him as much as I thought I would. I also need more of him in my life. The man that was ranting turns out to be nothing more than a puppet implanted with false memories and Decim gets a reaming for not paying attention to the kid he didn’t get any memories from.
Everyone leaves and Decim gets the day off from having to judge any guests, he takes Kuro to her room where he tucks her in with his magic.
We get a scene with Nona and another one of the characters who, I’m going to be honest, has a really cool design. Apparently, she’s in charge of managing everything and it’s not easy considering how fast humans die.
We cut back to the storybook dream, where the little boy wants to play with the little girl but she can’t hear him because she’s deaf. So he mimes the things he wants to do and she catches on and they play together. However, he doesn’t learn her name. He asks his mother later and she says that the little girls name is Chavvot.
Kuro wakes up and we cut to a scene of Nona reading a book about the same thing that Kuro was just dreaming about and the episode ends.
Well. that was an interesting episode. I honestly think I gave it maybe a little too simple of a summery for what it was, I think when it comes to character developing episodes like this it’s best that you see it yourself.
Look like next episode is going to have a focus on Ginti and another one of the characters from the opening. I’m glad that we’re going to be finding out more about Kuro and getting to see more of the residents of Quindecim and the place it resides. Is it wrong of me to want to see more fights between Ginti and Decim? They were just so cool.
Next episode, “Cross Heart Attack”, wait, not Death ‘whatever’ WE’VE BROKEN THE NAMING SCHEME, EVERYONE PANIC. -flails about like a chicken with their head cut off-
