Sometimes you have to sit a few days on an episode to get a clear idea of what you thought of it. If i’d written this right after watching it, I think I wold of labeled this episode as ‘boring’ because it’s a whole lot of nothing happening but once again setting up for things to happen in the next episode.
But Midnight! So much happens this episode, how could you call it boring, you ask? Yes, stuff happens. Shinichi kills a guy who is feeding at a designated feeding area and thus declares war on the Parasites. The Investigator gives up and admits that he is in far over is head. Shinichi spends more then half the episode fleeing for his life!
You see, that’s where the problem is. In that part of the episode where he is running for his life and nothing is really happening. It builds up to something really cool, but the build up itself just drags on for a long time.
So how did he end up running for his life to begin with, let’s go to the beginning of the episode where this guy is tailing a Parasite to this feeding site. He catches him eating a girl and gets eaten himself.
The private investigator that has been following Shinichi calls him for help, the guy who was eaten was gathering information for him. So they head down into this parking garage. Shinichi can smell that two people have been murdered and then Migi informs him that another parasite is coming and that they’ve brought dinner.
Shinichi and the private investigator hide while the guy comes down and goes to eat his meal. Shinichi, unable to do the smart thing and just sit by and watch runs in and attacks the guy in an attempt to save the girl from becoming dinner. Well, she wasn’t eaten, but she isn’t alive either…so I’d call that a loss. They fight, Shinichi wins. They get the fuck out of there.
The parasites talk about how much of a problem Shinichi is and Reiko says that if they’re going to kill him, at least bring his body back in one piece. She wants to dissect him.
So this leads to the scene where the investigator quits, destroys the tape he had and admits he was wrong for all that self-righteous bull crap he was talking about in the other episode. He’s a normal human, a coward with a wife and kid that he needs to protect so he’s getting the hell away from all of this. ‘Good of man kind’ be damned.
Migi tells Shinichi he’s essentially declared war on the parasites by killing one of them in their designated feeding area. The biggest point of contention this episode is Shinichi’s willingness to try to eradicate the other parasites and Migi being like. “Our lives are the most important.” Shinichi figures that as long as they take them one on one, they can win every fight.
I think maybe one of the most interesting parts of the episode is Shinichi’s nightmare, where he sees a skellington like creature looking out observing things. In a way it reminds me of the Shinigami in death note looking down on earth, he turns and says that Shinichi calls him a monster but then tells him to look at himself and holds up a mirror. The interesting part is the voice of the creature turns from something monstrous into Migi’s voice before holding up the mirror to Shinichi.
So at school, he plans on attacking the parasites one by one and trying to con Migi into helping, then he’s told by Migi that there are three parasites after him. He yells to Murano that he will protect her. [It looks like she’s almost given up on him, but he still loves her deeply. I’m impressed with her development. I do want them to get together but not until he either comes clean to her or something big happens.], anyway, he goes to fight them, however, Migi gets tired and falls asleep. This leads to the running away for ever bit of the episode.
He runs, gets in cars, flee’s, is paranoid that anything and everything could be a parasite. He runs for four hours and then is cornered by one guy. He doesn’t think that he’s a parasite because he’s so expressive but he is….actually. He’s not just one parasite. As Migi wakes up he declares that he can feel all three parasites and Shinichi’s like “Yeah, I don’t know where the other two are, but there’s one.” and Migi’s like, “No…he is all three.”
So this guy has three parasites in his body. huh, interesting. So is it like what would of happened if Migi had of joined with that guy back in like episode two? Did all three take this guy at once? Is he an experiment by the guys with political power? I’m interested to know more about how this happened and what his story is. Also, for the fight which begins but then gets cut off by the end of the episode.
Oh boy, next episode is called ‘Happy Family’ I like none of the implications behind this title. Also, as for the literature title this week, I don’t see any parallel to the book, but something wicked this way did come. So I guess it was a fitting title after all. I feel like this review is kind of short but honestly, the running around for four hours part was a lot of what happened and it wasn’t that interesting. It looks like next episode will have a lot to talk about though so I’m excited.
Yay for set up episodes?
