The ending really set this show up for a second season. We learn new things about some people, and some things…well, we don’t get much explanation for.
The entire episode is Divisions 1 and 2 working together to take out the roaches. They work together to take them out, but it’s crazy how many there are. Thousands? Millions? It’s like they keep regenerating. They just won’t go away. GO AWAY. The group is gonna be fighting those things for a long time. They’ve only been on Mars for 9 days. If I remember correctly, Komachi said it’d take 48 days for the rescue ship to arrive and pick them up. Komachi tells the group they have 39 days until then. So…oh my god. I know they haven’t been there long, but 9 days? And all that shit happened? Yikes.
Akari suddenly goes berserk out of nowhere, just like how we saw him defeat that bear in the first episode. Why and how? I have no idea. It was so sudden and out of nowhere. Komachi and Michelle had to calm him down before he totally lost it.
In the very beginning of the episode, we get a look at some of the higher ups from U-NASA. One of them (forgot his name) had a phone conversation with some guy named Goodman. Apparently, he’s behind the mess the BUGS 2 group is facing. We learn that the rescue ship hasn’t even left Earth, the group on Mars having no idea. It was this Goodman guy’s decision. So it really sucks that a bunch of people died while thinking they were gonna be saved. Now none of them are. And why? Who knows. I wish they showed this piece of information sooner. But the man that talked to Goodman, who’s also a very close friend of Komachi, doesn’t like this and will do whatever he can to save Komachi and everyone else.
Asimov and his group go over the detailed paper thing they found. It seems like he figured out who gave these cockroaches their information, and now it’s obvious who it was. The information goes over where the Annex would have landed, where they kept their medicine, and how the medicine worked. No wonder those roaches are so damn smart. So now we’re left with a bunch of questions. What the hell is that Goodman guy thinking? What’s his purpose? I wouldn’t a clue. Also, there was a Death Star thing in space. I don’t know what that was.
That’s all that happened this episode. Terra Formars has always been an easily summarized show so I’m just going to move on to my overall thoughts on this show.
Plot: It’s simple. A virus from Mars is killing people on Earth, so it’s up to a group of people to head to Mars and getting samples to bring them back to Earth and create a vaccine. But the problem are the deadly cockroaches. We didn’t have much to go on from there. It’s plain and simple. It could have been more interesting, but it slowly dwindled. At first I was really enjoying the show. I thought it was fascinating. But after while, with its slow pacing, it was starting to become tiring. Character backstories were in almost every episode, so it slowed things down. And while action and fighting scenes can be great, it can get really boring when you have it in basically every episode. Also, I knew this show was going to be a horror, and people said this series wasn’t shy with its blood and gore. This is a show not for people with weak stomachs. The gore was doing well at first. It created this atmosphere of helplessness and fear, of shock. And…then it became more shock. We just saw more and more characters getting killed off for shock value, but since they were background characters, I didn’t care. The violence was tasteless and too many action and backstories made this show too slow. I felt like nothing was getting done, and it wasn’t until the very end that we receive new information that was only setting up for the next season. Though I can’t say that I’m going to be interested in it.
Characters: That’s also where the show falls flat. At first I thought Akari was the main character. But then we get introduced to a plethora of characters, some more important than others. Even so, many of them got backstory. Some were pretty good, some were great, and some were random. Like that boxer guy. And then some didn’t get any at all. We kept switching our attention back and forth from one division to another, and most of the time they were in the middle of a fight, so that doesn’t leave time for character interaction or anything. It’s hard to find anything likeable about some of these people because I don’t even know anything about them. WHO ARE YOU? I forget some of these peoples’ names because they’re so insignificant. The only character I can’t say this about is Adolf. He started out as the person I just did not like, but he grew to be my favorite character in this show. I will admit that the three episodes where his backstory was touched upon, other things could have happened. But Adolf’s episodes were just so damn good that I didn’t care. Everyone else was boring (Michelle was pretty cool), but Adolf is definitely hands down the best character in this show.
Animation and Sound: OH MAN DO THEY REUSE MUSIC. The same damn songs would play, which were like 3 of them, and it got really annoying after while. I really like the opening and ending songs though. Music was a little bit of a dud. Can’t say much about animation either. It’s dark and not very colorful, but makes sense for its setting and the type of show it is. Sometimes the animation could look really ugly, and it was never spectacular. It was okay.
I had really been excited about this show from the moment I read the synopsis. I had called this a popcorn flick before, despite it not being a movie. Basically, it’s a show to watch when you want to see some action and gross gore. It can be entertaining, but you know it’s not good. I wouldn’t say Terra Formars was terrible, but it wasn’t great either. If there ever will be a second season (if it sells enough), I don’t think I’ll be interested in covering it. In the end, I’ll give Terra Formars a 6/10.
