This week on Brynhildr in the Darkness-  uhm. . . not that much really.

I have to start by saying the greatest weakness of the show is the very inconsistent tone. I am very interested in the dilemma, the plot, the hidden stuff- but I am not very interested in what this episode was about. I’m not like AGH THIS SHOW SUCKS but this episode was very slow and literally transitioned from melting people to complaining about hunger. Mood setting, where for art thou?

The entire first part of this episode was the main character being bent out of shape over Kuroneko and the dilemma he has of comparing Kuroha, his mysterious savior who calls herself a witch, to his deceased friend. Even at school he finds himself disappointed if she’s not there- luckily for him the teacher sends him on an errand to give her the transfer form she needs to turn in, and viola. Hijinks ensue.

The boner that this guy had for his childhood friend is so bad this episode even concludes with MAN I MUST HAVE A REALLY BAD BONER FOR THIS CHICK I mean I’m paraphrasing but rather than be sympathetic sometimes I just want him to come out and say “Yeah you’re like my friend but I’m also interested in you and want you to know I feel like we could be good friends if you allow me into your life.” That’s my main problem with this guy- normally anime has it so women feel like a token love interest to the men in their lives. Not here, I kind of feel like 90% of the time he is so into kuroha that it’s he who is the attach on love interest. Kuroha has super powers and an epic sidekick. The main character is so bland I keep forgetting his name.

Kuroha’s entire part in this episode is being completely vague about her unfortunate future. At one point in the episode they save someone’s life in a trivial way but it’s so bland it feels like a filler. What’s important here is the two really interesting things that made this episode tolerable, one being the adorable lolita.

This loli is a paralyzed future telling tsundere who speaks by typing with the one hand that works. She is sassy and amuses the hell out of me, and her name is Kana. WE MUST ALL OBSERVE HER WITH ADORATION BECAUSE SHE IS THE GREATEST

And second is the plot that Kana overshadows- one of the other escaped witches was captured and then killed by their recruiter, as well as her friend who saw her magic. And she er….melts. Very……very meltily might I add. It’s….she sure melted.

And guhrrhr, I want to know what this whole plot line is! What are the ‘witches’?! Are they dead people brought back to serve as vessels and glorified corpses who can be melted and destroyed at the whim of their creator?! Are they playdough dolls meant solely to torture the day care keepers who clean out the molds?! ARE WE GOING TO SEE MORE OF THIS GUY?

what do you want i like silver hair
what do you want i like silver hair

The episode ends with Kuroha saying she will go on the upcoming trip at school, only for her to stop coming after an incident where her nose bleeds. The implication from the episode is very distinctly THEY’RE GOING TO DIE SOON OOOOOOOH~~~~ ARE YOU INTERESTED KEEP WATCHING DO IT and fine. Fine. I’ll do it you bastards.

But there better more plot next week.

“The main character is so bland I keep forgetting his name.”

    He has a name? 😛

Aside from that this episode didn’t bother me. …Or rather, it didn’t bother me in the way it bothered you. The fact that those lab people took that girl Kanade and kidnapped her innocent friend Maki and apparently murdered both of them certainly bothers me, and I expect thoughts of it to be haunting me for a while (it’s very easy for me to get emotionally invested in characters; that’s why I should never ever watch shows like this), but that’s supposed to bother me, and I didn’t feel that anything in particular was wrong with the presentation of the episode itself.

PS: You’re supposed to be realizing by the end of the episode something the main character is too stupid to realize: that he is coming to like Kuroha for herself, not just because she resembles Kuroneko. He’s actually using the “she resembles Kuroneko” thing as an unconscious excuse for the reason why he’s interested in her, when the truth is that he’s interested in her for her own sake.

It didn’t bother me, it had me intrigued. But that’s why I’m covering this LOL the death of people seldom bothers me until they’re shown on screen in real time for awhile.

I knew that, fyi, but he’s just…so dumb it ruins the whole point. Nooo shit you mean you actually like an interesting and beautiful girl? Good goin Sherlock!

I can’t wait until the blu-rays come out to see if we can see all the uncensored gore. The melting girl is so steamy it’s like a hot springs episode up in here.

AT LEAST IN HOT SPRING EPISODES THERE ARE BOOBIES

Oh wow, I just realized that I don’t know the main character’s name lol this has never happened to me before. Don’t tell me!! Let’s see if I can pick up on it.

Despite the apparent shift in tone from melting girls to fun cake time, I do feel that the darkness is always there, just hidden. For instance, the cute girls are hungry and ate some cake…but it was LIQUIFIED cake. Like their friend, who was liquefied. So in a symbolic way…it’s like they’re eating their friend…OR SOMETHING. That’s what I’d say if I were on the animation team and had to explain this show’s apparent bipolar disorder haha. I remember Elfin Lied being like that as well, I think it’s just the author’s thing.

So I’m super interested in the whole witches thing, but the MC is pretty blandio. I’d say I’d be happier if he didn’t exist, but then this would probably be a yuri show and I don’t jive like that. On the other hand, that scientist guy seems pretty cool even if we only saw him for like three minutes and he’s probably evil. For I too am a fan of silver hair. And scientist guys.

I would ruin your fun and tell you but I seriously still don’t remember. . .
yeah the darkness is there, I think the problem is…it’s annoyingly there? Like. . . the MC is so into what he thinks and not even bothering to think or feel things similar to me so I’m like..wut? I don’t know half the time.
Yeaah…I wish he existed but more interesting. Rentaro from Black Bullet should be the main character. Then this show would be perfect all the time.
