“I’m not tasty at all!”

P401
Summary

Yokodera Youto is always thinking about his carnal desires, but no one acknowledges him as a pervert. He learns about a cat statue that supposedly grants wishes. The boy goes to pray that he will be able to express his lustful thoughts whenever and wherever he wants. At the statue, Youto encounters Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, a girl from his high school with her own wish—that she would not display her real intentions so readily.

Vantage’s Impression

P400This Spring’s final premiere is Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko – a slice-of-life show (with a dab in in the supernatural) which is unsurprisingly geared towards a male demographic. Meet Yokodera Youto: your standard male protagonist, who leads a regular school life and has his fair share of perverted thoughts. And I can’t really blame him – especially when be belongs to a track/field club full of girls in bloomers, whose field is right next to the Swim Club and their alluring swimsuits. Now imagine if no-one called him out on his perverted nature – or rather, he can’t express them himself. Youto spends his time doing squats right next to the swimming pool window, and no-one at all suspects that he’s actually peeking on the girls inside – much less the club president, who offers him a promotion instead. And when he tries to reject it in favour of chasing his perverted dreams, he suddenly says the exact opposite, putting up a perfect facade of his true thoughts.

P386It’s ironic that Youto manages to act perverted in front of the one person he doesn’t want to scare off – Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, a kouhai who arrives at the Stony Cat the same night he does in order to get rid of an aspect of her personality. That dakimakura and the resulting chase that ensued was hilarious 😀 But really, anyone would be terrified if a random dude turns up in an isolated area with a creepy dakimakura, shouting “I’LL BE GENTLE!” while running around chasing after you xD What an unlucky first impression…at least it’s a nice set-up for a future OTP, even if it wasn’t the most romantic encounter. I think the both of them far underestimated what the Stony Cat could do, and worded their wishes really badly as a result – Youto lost his facade completely, and was unable to tell lies at all while Tsukiko went from showing her true feelings easily to having no emotion at all. And there’s a “no returns” policy to boot, as their attributes have already been given to other people, who apparently need it more than they do.

That said, if Youto is really that perverted deep down, I’m pretty sure he needs his facade – or he’s going to suffer quite a bit for the rest of his school life. That guy kept digging his own grave and didn’t know how to stop, from provoking ojou-sama idol Azuki Azusa about her lack of boobs (I didn’t even notice she was flat, to be honest) to ranting magnificently at his senpai’s lack of perverted stimuli with her shorts. “Hentai Prince” does really sum him up well…he must have been bottling up a lot of thoughts to have something pervy to say every time he opened his mouth. Well, there goes his reputation – even Tsukiko heard about it by the end of the day, who found her own share of problems from having no emotions, and wants to return to her old self.

I actually don’t see the Stony Cat reversing their wishes any time soon – chances are, Youto will end up befriending Azuki Azusa (much to Tsukiko’s jealousy) now that he’s “defeated” her in front of the school like that. While Azusa now has Youto’s facade, choker and all, she apparently needs it more than he does, and might not be willing to give it back – perhaps her ojou-sama’s attitude isn’t getting her any friends, which she hopes to change with a facade to mask her thoughts? I’ll definitely be watching this to see how everything plays out – as for blogging…we’ll see. I don’t mind, but I’d like to test the waters for a bit longer xD

Chris’ First Impression:

 Love. Love. Love. Love. Yes.

So, basically… I’ve got a feeling that this is going to be my this seasons Oreshura, just with, y’know, 10x more crazy… When I go into a season, I immediately look for my school anime with romance and comedy mixed in… it’s a thing y’know? So the two I found this season were Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru and this, Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. Now I’d just like to point out that I’ve found myself to be somewhat of a fan of these types of anime, I don’t know why and I don’t know how it happened, my love for them simply bloomed… BUT that in an of itself is a story for another time. This season, I’m going to have to say that I preferred HenNeko (shorthand because I’m too lazy to write it out over and over again), OreGairu (shorthand again, I apologies) is good but it doesn’t do anything for me. I find that it is the epitome of mediocrity. How profound… But I digress, HenNeko has an aura of awesomeness that I haven’t felt since Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai or The World God Only Knows (the most recent times I’ve felt this way). I wouldn’t be able to say at this point if it’s going to be anywhere near as epic as those masterpieces, I mean, this is only the first episode after all, but if the story manages to keep this consistency and the characters display themselves appropriately then we shouldn’t have a problem. Now let’s get down to business!

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko Episode 1 Image 0000 Youto Yokodera… what a great character. It’s not too often in romantic comedy like this where it’s the MAIN character who is the pervert, although I guess in this case, that is the point. Youto is a high school student who loves nothing more than women, big boobs and cuddle pillows named Barbara… he’s a bit eccentric y’know? I love his perversion! It’s so funny! It adds a comical aspect to the show which, to be honest, I’m really enjoying. I have to admit, even I’d be scared if I went into the woods and found a guy with a sexual cuddle pillow attached to his back… I don’t really like talking too much about how interesting characters are when it’s a romantic comedy because main characters tend to usually be the same thing but with a quirk or eccentricity thrown in for diversity. I like Youto because he’s not like that, he’s something new, something different. He’s a refreshing take on a romantic comedy main character and I think it’s going to be awesome watching him blurt obscenities throughout the rest of the show. One last thing before we move on though, in no way am I saying that this is the first time a character like Youto has shown up in anime (as a main character), but it has been a while since I’ve been able to enjoy a show like this so, y’know, GET OVER IT! OH! And I almost forgot… Youto is voiced by Yuki Kaji! AMAZING VOICE ACTOR! Yeah… I think that’s all…

Tsukiko Tsutsukakushi. Her moe! Allow me to plagiarize a poem and add my own twist… ehem:

These perverted days have broken my heart,

My lust, my youth did them depart,

For her moe alone, many men would bemoan,

And because it is so, many still cry out,

It is a great shame that it is dead… and gone.

So, yeah. Tsukiko looked like an AMAZING character when she first appeared, so cute, so luring! Ah! She’s a death trap! I LOVED her character, there are no words to describe the feels I was having y’know? And then she made a wish… and now she’s Kuudere… WHY?! I’m sorry, but am I the only one who really doesn’t like Kuudere characters (probably because I’m worryingly Kuudere in real life… these blog posts are my inner feels man!)? They are so boring! Unless they’re Yuki Nagato. I mean why, why did she have to make that wish? It’s not like I don’t like her character any more, it’s just that she’s totally not what I wanted from this character. The PV promoted this cute, quiet girl, who seemed to be somewhat of an introvert… I should sue for false advertisement… DAT CUTENESS is gone! I would send out a search party or two but I’m hoping that the situation will be resolved by the end of the series. BRING DAT MOE BACK!

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko Episode 1 Image 0001
How could this happen? Who could do something this cruel to me? Was it you Gen Urobuchi?

I don’t want to say too much more because I feel as though Vantage pretty much covered it, but I’m looking forward to seeing how every character is going to develop and…. ‘change’. I have a feeling that they will eventually regain their persona’s but until then I shall cry at the loss of Tsukiko’s cuteness… She’s still cute I GUESS, but it’s an entirely different kind of cute. Now I may even find myself rooting for Azuki! Although we all know that if there’s going to be a ‘proper romance’ in this show, it’s going to be Youto x Tsukiko all the way… just saying y’know?

I didn’t think about it as much while reading the manga, but watching the anime really made me realize that Youto’s reasoning is ridiculous. You wouldn’t have to put on a facade if you weren’t consistently doing/thinking perverted things, now would you? Keeping your mouth shut about things that could get you into trouble is called common sense, not a life flaw =/ that said, people need their secrets (flashbacking to Kotoura-san now…), so even a normal person would have some trouble with not being able to lie, ever.

But I did find the first episode to be enjoyable comedy-wise, and I really like Youto’s female counterpart Tsukiko. I think everyone can sympathize with wanting to be more mature, and kudos to her for focusing on the mental aspects of being grown-up rather than the physical- to me that’s already an excellent demonstration of a maturing mind. As for Azuki, I’m not a big fan of the ojou-sama “I’ll step on you as a reward!” archetype, but it’s clear that this is just her facade courtesy of the stoney cat, so I’ll withhold any knee-jerk reactions until the show has taken the time to elaborate on her true character a bit more.
