While at school, Nanami rescues a white snake that then left a mark on her wrist. When she returns to the shrine, Tomoe takes notice of it and reveals that the mark means an engagment and that the snake will eventually appear to take her away. In order to guard Nanami, Tomoe goes to school with her only to have her taken away while he was asleep.

THIS
EPISODE
WAS
PERFECT!
PERFECT I TELL YOU!!!!
OH MY FREAKING GOD, I AM SO HAPPY! SO HAPPY THAT I WANT TO CRY.
I WAS GRINNING LIKE IDIOT FROM THE VERY START TILL THE VERY END, AND AS I WRITE THIS, I AM STILL FEELING GIDDY! Just, oh my god, I have faith in this adaption again. Within this episode they’ve proven they can do this properly. The pace, I have no complaints, they hardly left anything out- in fact… I think they covered everything *flips through volume 3 chapter 14 – 16* Yup! I’m proud to confirm that they were successful in following this arc loyally!
Definitely hands down, the best part about this episode was the lack of Shoujo Bubbles, no joke.. On the more serious note of what served the best for the plot, was definitely the pace. It was definitely a great surprise to see that covering the chapters of Mizuki’s arc within one episode without cramming and rushing stuff was seriously the biggest highlight. There were one or two noticeable quick cuts such as when Nanami told Tomoe to spare the Cherry Blossom tree. It happened so quickly that if you blink, you miss, but that’s such a minor thing so I can hardly complain about it.
Another thing I really enjoyed this episode was the lighting setting. It was a real nice touch and it was nice to have a darker contrast to what we’ve been been seeing for the past three episodes. The shrine felt eerie and delivered that feeling of loss. With no visitors, the shrine has been long abandoned and while it’s god is in hiding, Mizuki is taking care of it with such devotion. I don’t know about you, but I felt that they delivered it really well.
Mizuki’s voice was perfect. The minute I heard him speak, I was cheering at my screen because wow- spot on. I was so pleased. Mizuki character is a lonely, he served the shrine and his master has been in hiding because she is only born through the people who pray for her presence. He is a sweet fella and in the future, despite his mischievousness, much like Tomoe pointed out: He was raised sheltered from the outside world, so he can be pretty naive. Either way Mizuki is a precious character and I do adore him.
Seeing Tomoe’s frustration of not being able to guard Nanami properly and how he views her as such a delicate being that could die from falling from a tree, gives you a hint why Tomoe is so wary of humans. He fears that if he isn’t careful, he might destroy her.
Nanami earns a new perspective as a god, with her encounter with Mizuki and learning about his situation, she thinks about what she’d wish for Tomoe if she were to ever die. We also got to see her grow as a God, as she gains and embrace new found knowledge. We can tell that her powers have grown enough that she was able to sense that something was missing. I’m really looking forward to next week’s episode since this will be the first big moment for Nanami to shine independently without any support.
So with that said:
EVERYONE REJOICE! LITTLE!TOMOE WILL HAPPEN NEXT WEEK! PREPARE FOR THE CUTENESS OVERLOAD AND KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED BECAUSE THIS WILL BE AN IMPORTANT EPISODE!!!!
Yesssss! This episode restored a little bit of my faith in this show. I haven’t read the first part of the manga in a while, but the pacing was much better, school-boy Tomoe was precious, the animation quality went up a bit and didn’t have so many boring/blank backgrounds, slow pans, or (as many) shoujo bubbles, and Mizuki was suitably adorable.
Plus, Nanami and Tomoe were so cute together <3! Yup, overall, very satisfied with the episode.
I was squealing like crazy during the embrace scene because damn, so perfect askdjlkasjdkladlad /fangirling
