Another week of weirdness in Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita, but that is exactly how I like it. While I didn’t appreciate so much the last arc involving manga, I think I’ll love this one which involves electricity and magic. The show brings in interesting reflection about the world of the fantastical.
Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita is set in a post-apocalyptic world where technology has declined and electricity has become a rarity. People lead simple lives and everything is done mainly in manual labor. Having said that, the citizen of this world have access to another interesting resource, they have fairies. The fairies are a magical, mysterious and uncontrollable force that acts around the humans of the world. But as was shown this episode, the more electricity there is, the less fairy there will be. What this means in the show is that as you get more technology, you won’t see as many good miracles around you. But what does this really mean?
Here is my interpretation of it. The fairies represent the fantastical and the magical in the show. They are doing good around them, but they are not benevolent gods, they are kind of still really creepy and sadistic. On the other hand technology is seen as the thing which brought humanity to the all the low it is now. Technology is seen as a rational vice that corrupts the world. The more rational things get, the less magic can happen. When you were a kid and you didn’t understand anything about the world, everything around you was pure magic, you didn’t knew how things worked and therefore you could imagine it worked just how you wanted it to work and until you were proven wrong, it was your truth about it. But now you are all grown up (hopefully) and you know how things work, there is no room anymore for your imagination, things are like that and those are the outcome, no funny fairies can come around and do magic to make things work.
This can even be said about the younger generation now. Before Video Game were invented, most game involved creativity and the use of one mind to invent and imagine stuff. But now with fancy graphic and video game everything is explicit and there is no more room for magic, everything is as you see it. Therefore the more technology come into our life, the less miracles will happen and no one will see the fairies anymore, because everyone will be too busy looking at their computer screen and emitting EMP’ that kills them.
On a completely different final note… Robot-Neko-Girl ! woohoo. I don’t know who taught of that one, but it is something I might very well enjoy, ecchi or no.
