It seems Eva was right when she was reluctant about this show in the Summer preview post. I’m personally not particularly a fan of Oda Nobunaga as a historical figure, Sengoku Basara taught me that I’m more of a Date Masamune gal, but the premiere of this show kind of put me off this character a bit.

I don’t mind historical anime, sometimes I can even enjoy it a lot like it was the case with Onihei, but there really is a fine line when it comes to entertaining or boring in these types of shows because they tend to be slow and often also episodic. Kochoki: Wakaku Nobunaga had a decent start, I was intrigued about where it was going to go because I liked the voice of the female narrator and her intro made things sound interesting. This happened once again in the end when narration closed the episode; I was suddenly interested. In between? Not so much.

I haven’t actually watched anime Oda Nobunaga-centric anime before. I’ve heard pretty good things about a couple titles before and i wondered if this was going to be a hidden gem, maybe. I can’t say so early in the season that this is far from the truth, but so far I’m not super compelled to find out. The narrative structure of the episode was all right, if a little bland, the characters are fine, although I  don’t really find the designs appealing and when the show is a bit slow and you only have the pictures to look at and you don’t like it, it hurts. I struggled to go through the whole episode, although I must admit there were a couple parts that were a bit entertaining. Overall, it was fairly predictable and stereotypical anime about a guy who becomes a leader and how it happens.

I don’t think it’s a horrible show by any means, it’s fairly decent and it shows some cool moments of the character being assertive and showing wit early on, which are representative characteristics of Oda Nobunaga, but it’s also standard and nothing in particular stands out. From my previous experience blogging, that would very quickly become a ‘describe the episode’ type of post and it’s not something I’d like to repeat at the moment. I briefly considered giving the show a second episode, but the dread I felt at the thought told me all I needed to make my choice.

Despite the josei/otome-ish character designs, esp. the men, this is an original anime.
I do wonder who the target audience is though – historical drama done josei style for ladies?

Fun fact – the blonde woman encountered is Nobunaga’s future concubine (and supposedly his one true love, if history is correct).

Yeah, I must said I’m very puzzled by the whole thing. Like you said, it might be a Josei style to appeal to ladies, but that definitely was more of a miss than a hit with me.
