Have you ever wondered what would happen if two stuck up people with absolutely rotten personalities fell in love with each other, but were too full of pride to be the first one to confess? Well that’s exactly what this anime is, the President and Vice President of the Student council. Miyuki Shirogane and Kaguya Shinomiya as they engage in their battle of wits and mind to see who can get who to confess their love first.
Such underhanded tactics as conning the sweet, innocent student council secretary into slipping them tickets to a romance movie and then mentioning that when a man and a woman go to a romance together, there is a legend that the two of them will end up together.

Pretending that you are going to say yes to a random love letter you received from a man far below your notice.

and denying flat out to ask to sample the commoners food of octopus weiners!

The episode is split up into three self-contained bits of comedy. It appears this episode bits are based on chapters 1, 5 and 12 of the manga.

The first part introduces the characters and is the part with the movie tickets, it’s oddly hilarious to see these two in a battle of minds and wits be completely shut down and defeated by the secretary proposing that they go see a different film instead if they aren’t into romance movies. Like this one completely innocent act just shuts down these two geniuses and leaves them both there exhausted and broken.

The second part, which apparently is chapter 12 of the manga focuses about Kaguya getting a love letter from a random boy in the school. In an attempt to get Shirogane to confess to her, she says that she is going to accept the letter and go on a date with this person. I got a huge kick out of the fact that their image of this person was a walking/talking weed. The secretary once again ruins this scheme of Kaguya’s by being the one to beg her not to go on the date and risk being expelled from school.
After all, this is Japan. No illicit relationships between students, with this in mind Shirogane threatened to get her expelled by using the forbidden technique. “I’ll tell the teacher!”

The third part and probably my favorite part doesn’t even involve a scheme to get them dating. Instead it circles around the idea that she wants to eat a part of his bento. In particular, the octopus weiner. As a rich girl, she has only ever had lunches prepared by a group of professional chefs and has never had something homemade and simple in her life. She has heard about it, but has never tried it. So she stares on with envy and her pride and watches as the secretary eats a part of Shirogane’s lunch.
She glares evilly and thinks worse and worse things about the Secretary [her name is Chika]. Who she’s been friends with for so long, she thought she was her friend and now she’s her enemy! Nothing more then a worthless cow!
Until Shirogane gets super intimidated by all of Kaguya’s glaring and rushes out of the student council room in a hurry and Chika shares the octopus shaped weiner from the lunch that Shirogane made for her. Then Chika is upgraded to human once again.

I loved this episode. These too dorks, so full of pride and trying to hide their feelings. Yet it’s clear that they care deeply for one another. Chika is a fun character that makes for a good outside source of issues for the main couple. The visuals are fantastic and the opening might go down as one of the best of the year and it’s only winter. It’s catchy, fun, and the visuals are amazing. I think I really want to cover this!
