Kyoukai no Rinne Ep 6 [ Yet another Damashigami ]

This episodes weekly minion is a much less interesting one than last week. As usual Kyoukai no Rinne proves itself to be a serial shounen where the monster of the week shows up to get everything done, and this week it’s cat demons who are suspiciously taking over kids. What I really liked was the creepy overlay of the shine we see in this episode, but let’s be for real.

For most of this episode it was kind of a snorefest. Don’t get me wrong I stand behind myself and say yeah this show has so much potential yeah so much is cool! But a lot of it also isn’t. A lot of it is still the new formula: Jumonji is jealous of Rokudo while Mamiya only really sees Rokudo as an expert shinigami but also kind of likes him but isn’t sure. The will they won’t they of the Rumiko Takahashi formula is strong.

But I can’t say it was all bad. The only thing that makes me roll my eyes is that I got an episode with yet another damashigami and it feels almost funny at this point. Damn you ya trouble making damashigami sons of bitches! With your human traps. Basically a very transparent damashigami led kids to breaking a shrine with cat spirits in it, they took over their bodies and trapped them.

Ultimately the only real conflict is it forces Jumonji to save Rokudo and it’s clear just how bad Jumonji has it for Mamiya right now. And always has. And always will. And will continue to be completely shut down because Mamiya is more interested in a wet paper bag in a field of paper bags than she is with Jumonji’s interests. I feel bad for the guy but she’s just not that into you brother.

Finally though I think we’re getting somewhere! At the end of the episode we see the damashigami report to a figure whose face is obscured and has…red hair. From the opening alone we can kind of suggest ‘super important villain!!’ but are they Rokudou’s father, brother, uncle, twice removed cousin of divorces and marriage? Who knows, it’s something interesting so I’m clinging to it. Let’s hope we see it next time.
