Ahhhh this story just keeps on getting better and better. I don’t know whether or not I should be happy that my copy of Volume 2 has not been delivered (let alone be shipped yet, FFFFF–) to me yet (OH THE AGONY, I HAVE THE MIGHTY NEED TO READ IT!). This is the first episode where I have no prior knowledge regarding the content within the novel.

DanMachi Ep 4 Img 0024That being said, I am really enjoying what our new support Liliruca’s, character turned out to be. She is an animal person, a Chienthrope, and is part of the Soma Familia. What surprised me about her is how she turned out to be a thief. We learned how Lili goes as far as stealing the goods and weapons from those who hire her as a support. After teaming up with Bell, she went ahead and successfully stolen Bell’s precious Hestia Knife and tried to sell it off for cash back. Lili has also shown us she is not used to good/fair treatment as a Support. When she and Bell managed to rack up a personal new record of gathering 26 000 Valis. When Bell split their earnings evenly, Lili was taken aback, and identified him as ‘weird’ because she is so used to getting either nothing or leftovers. Now realizing that Bell is different than her past clients, I am looking forward to seeing how differently she is going to act, especially now that Freya is once again, stirring up trouble for the fun of it and they will need to rely on each other more than ever.

You have to admit, the Hestia Blade is genius craft. It doesn’t just evolve with it’s linked wielder, but thanks to its unique ability, the blade is useless in any others’ hands than Bell’s and made it unsellable. This quirk managed to prevent the Hestia Blade from being sold to a pawnshop. The shopkeeper observed the blade and deemed it as a piece of trash, useless, and ultimately worthless to the extent of 30 Valis. Needless to say, she could have sold it if she was desperate enough to any other vendor regardless of it’s lack of value, but fortunately thanks to Ryu’s keen senses, she was able to retrieve the stolen knife and return it to Bell. It did surprise me that she didn’t tell Bell of Lili’s crime, but it could have had consequences had Lili attempted to steal both the gift Eina had given to Bell along with his knife once more.

There is something strange going on with the Soma Familia. Their desperate acts for getting a hold of as much cash as possible makes me wonder if they are in a state of bankruptcy or do the Adventurers suddenly have to pay to be a member of the Familia, or is there something far more complicated going on? Either way, I look forward to finding out what’s the root of the problems, as I am sure Lili will soon open her heart to Bell and explain to him of the circumstances she and her fellow siblings are facing.

DanMachi Ep 4 Img 0006The outing with Eina was adorable. Since Bell has been granted permission to explore the 7th Floor, Eina has decided to escort him to Babel, Hephaestus Familia’s Shop to buy some better armor. Bell freaked out because though he couldn’t afford anything, but it turns out at the upper-top floor, above the extravagant halls, are shops where the beginners/rookie Black Smiths sell their works for far more affordable and lower prices. While browsing, Bell fell in love at first sight with a light-weight armor that would cost everything he has, and I’m glad he bought it- because damn that boy needed some good armor. He was also treated to a gift from Eina, who encouraged him to keep it for her sakes. It got really deep when Eina started talking about how they never know when an Adventurer is going to die, and she reveals she knows a lot who never came back from the dungeon. It brought back the reality of danger of being an Adventurer, of how it’s not sunshine and rainbows, a question for glory, but a dangerous job that can take many lives.

The one last thing I wanted to point out was how I was surprised to see the lack of active support scenes. All we got to see today was Lili basically watching his back, and that’s about it. It certainly makes me more excited to see what she can actually do next week when they find themselves in some serious trouble.

Until next week, I’ll just sit here and stalk my email for that shipping notification.

I’m not sure supporters are what RPG players would think of as supporters: no sign of her doing any healing, buffing, debuffing, indirect damage, etc. Judging from the packs that she and the other supporters we saw carry, I’d say their job is mostly to be an intelligent pack mule. Should an upper-class person say “hold my coat” when he’s about to get into a fight, a supporter is the person who would do the coat-holding. Should an adventurer have extra gear that is inconvenient for him or her to carry by themself in addition to fighting, the supporter carries it. They also carry the loot, to keep the adventurer’s hands free.
Really, it doesn’t look like a very glamorous job: carrying the luggage for the person who gets to be The Hero. Persumably people only do it for the pay. If people start shorting their supporters on pay, well… kind of makes sense why Lili would have gotten into stealing from them.

I’m starting to wonder that too. We play too many RPG games to get caught up with the pattern. XD
Yeah, poor girl. 🙁 I wonder if she had always resorted to thievery even before things started to seemingly go from bad to worse at the Soma Famila. But thank goodness Bell exists to share his kindness to everyone! 😀

Hmm…there’s something wrong with the Soma guild…Shokeguki no Soma…Soma is actually a trap and a goddess…Soma is torturing all his familia with his awful creations and only large sums of money can stop him..no Soma is just too intense…and maybe they can’t take the heat or his/her harem…IF YOU CAN’T TAKE THE HEAT GET OUTTA DA KITCHEN!!!
Haha I don’t know but I’m sure we’ll find more about this next week. Bell was a-d-o-r-a-b-l-e as always, and Lili was cute, but my gut instinct was right because I had a lingering feeling that something was off about her. Poor her though, I do hope that she’s okay. But Bell is just so nice and pure and just amazing I swear. I hope we find out more about that other dude soon too. Oh my one complaint=> NOT ENOUGH BESTIA OR HESTIA X BELL MOMENTS (well that’s two I guess…)

Exactly! The fact that it was named Soma really took my mind for a spin, especially since I’m about to watch the latest episode of Shokugeki no Soma right after this! Glad I’m not the only one who thought wild theories.

I remember a few episodes ago, someone said that they haven’t gone into detail about what the dungeon is exactly, like in the LN, it may have been on here. I feel like that has been a good thing. For those, like myself, who’s only been watching the anime and avoiding the LN for now, it keeps a bit of mystery there, you want to know what it is that makes the dungeon so special, but it remains an enigma and you keep coming back hoping to learn more about it.

My heart loves the character interactions and the way things are genuinely serendipitous, not overly convenient! AGH ><
I find it sweet that Bell defers to Eina and just generally cares about what people have to say despite his ambition. It's not even him restraining himself at the last moment, he just always tries to give an ear to what people have to say. It also helps keeps the world of the story alive and connected that the "Guild" where Eina works isn't just trivial by only playing a role in the first episode.
It was also a pretty sweet detail how both he and Eina were blushing so red after the exchange of armour. Elves seem to be quite skilled! Eina wither her know-how, Ryu with some sort of power, perhaps an inherent elven trait?
I like how Bell had to work for and buy his armour. It really makes getting a new look extra special. My goodness, I really have too much to say about small details in this show. I can't go on or this post will be ridiculous.

The LNs explain that the monster crystals make good magic fuel. They are used to power a range of magical devices and inventions, like Orario’s street lamps and the Babel tower elevators.
The crystals are also Orario’s top export; the central guild sells them to other nations and cities as well.

Oh, I should relay this! Context makes me think this wasn’t in the novels so…
Some folks have apparently translated the heiroglyphs used for the god-writing in the show: the runes on Bell’s back and on the Hestia Knife. A translation of some of what we’ve seen was posted elsewhere:
Hestia Knife, the first three lines:
The truest of silver and brilliance of mithril, shapes thy body. The true light shall be clouded if touched by others. Take care, as only one who shares your blood, can draw this blade.
    On the edge:
You are the Goddess Hestia’s double. The flame of hearth that splits the shadow, the one who cuts through the path of your master. You are to be the forever companion, protecting your master.
The four lines at the back side of the knife:
The master of blacksmithing, Hephaestus being an Olympic ally of Hestia, to smelt this weapon. Marked by the Faruna, God’s Blade, you are our beloved Familia. Commanded to be equal to the name of Hestia. Share your strength and give glory to the ones who share your blood. The name of your master, Bell Cranel. You become the other half of your master; may you smile together, rage together, cry together, hurt together, travel together, surpass hardships together, grow together. Excelia be your food, sharpen your edge, and reach new height together.
    On Bell’s back:
You are the first Familia who shares my blood. Human, of banal birth. Strengthless vessel that holds the all pillars of possibilities. The prosperous race that receives numerous blessing. The pure-breed children that God shaped with their imagination. The undefined brilliance that allowed you to become anyone you wish.

Oh very interesting find!!! Those lucky folks who can translate heiroglyphs, so cool!!!!
I wonder if it was ever featured in the novels as I’m not sure how many volumes are already out- but I’ll keep my eyes peeled to see if there’s any mentioning in Vol 2. Thanks for sharing! *w*
